I’m currently waiting for my Mudita Kompakt to be shipped and delivered, but am already excited about this huge update arriving soon!
On the other hand though I’m somewhat baffled about some users in here complaining mainly about sideloading or display modes in conjunction with it even though that is clearly not officially supported. It also contradicts the main purpose of this phone. I don’t want to say that feature requests or criticism in general shouldn’t be communicated, but if it is about an officially unsupported topic than I think the critique in here is somewhat off the limits.
Sideloading is officially being supported via Mudita Center coming in next update, by popular demand.
Having E-ink modes it’s not an unreasonable request, it should be there by default like it is on every other e-ink phone/tablet that uses android. It’s ok to not have controls on a Kindle because all you do it read books, but on an android phone that has books, audio, video, camera, messaging, keyboard (default apps) that is a feature that should be included and not questioned if it exists.
Not having e-ink modes is like being able to drive your car on 5th gear only. And then someone like you would tell users that they’re demanding something that’s not officially supported. Or buying a 60fps camera, and not allowing the user to change to 24fps.
And again if those e-ink modes would exist you’re free not to use them, but I’m not free to use them because they’ve locked them to system apps only.
I don’t want by any means “fire shots” nor deny anyone their (desired) features. This is a open discussion and nothing else.
Regarding your first point I have to disagree. Mudita clearly states while there is the possibility to sideload apps it is not officially supported. Sideloading is on the users own risk.
In regards to your second point thanks for the general clarification. While I see the point you’re making this also affects mainly using sideloaded APKs, doesn’t it? The stock apps and the OS itself are AFAIK well optimized for the display mode in use.
I don’t have knowledge about different e-ink modes even though I have an e-ink ebook reader (which doesn’t support different modes other than a dark/bright mode). Maybe you can elaborate on those modes? Otherwise don’t worry since I’m familiar with using a search engine
You’re not the first person here that has been baffled by my whining, that’s why I said shots fired.
That was the case in the next update APK sideloading from Mudita Center will be possible, that is very official support in my book.
Yes they’re optimized in color/animations, but there’s no way how to say it gently, some of the default apps are so basic they shouldn’t have been made in the first place. Like the music player for example(no playlists, no albums, no artists, no search, no folders).
Even some of the default apps could use the reading mode, which would make the display much crispier if slow refresh modes were to be used. Currently the display only works on High Gamma (a lot of contrast) and in fast mode that doesn’t refresh the display, which works for the most part but leaves a lot of ghosting on the display.
It’s ok not to know about something, it’s not ok to be baffled by someones request if you don’t know more about it and especially if you haven’t used the device yourself. This is not a e-book reader only, there’s many more media format that this phone supports.
I still have to disagree on this. The option to sideload APKs via Mudita Center is only to make the process more comfortable, but at no point did Mudita say this means official support for everything regarding Sideloading.
Thanks for clarification once again and also the forum link provided to your topic about the matter. Very well documented and explained. You made some very good suggestions to improve on that. Kudos!
Support as in Allowing installation with little friction. I’m not saying they will support apps they haven’t developed themselves. But as long as it’s gonna be part of their Mudita Center, it’s counts as support to me.
Haven’t started with my MK yet because I’m on holiday and it arrived too late.
Nice to see that Mudita is working hard to improve the product. But hey, do you really think that Chess, Music, adding some Google s…t are priority?
First it’s a phone. To call someone I need a contacts list. Up to date if possible. And a calendar to know where and when I have to be. Calendar and Contacts synchronizing should be a priority. After five years with a Punkt MP02 I can tell you, this lack is the more annoying.
All others can be solved by the hotspot function and a tablet or lap-top.
A little wishlist from a not-very sophisticated user. I haven’t read everything so apologies if I’m repeating or if things have been addressed:
-Calendar: make recurring function available
-Alarm: hasn’t been 100% reliable
-Lock Screen: different options
-separate gallery app
-timer/stopwatch app
-convenient ‘force close all’ button
-autocorrect function
I love my new Kompakt and am so glad I made the switch! However, not having any sort of timer function and not being able to set recurring calendar events with customizable reminders (1 day before, etc) is making my life much harder! I certainly hope these essential updates will be added in the near future.
I second (or third or fourth) the suggestions of adding a timer, and also adding a recurring event function to the calendar. It would also be nice to have the ability to set text messages to auto delete after a specified amount of time (30/60/90 days etc) to help stay on top of storage.
Thank You so much guys for all your suggestions – we truly appreciate them. Some of the ideas you’ve mentioned are already on our roadmap, and we’re carefully noting down everything else as well.
As for the inverted mode – as far as I know, we currently don’t have plans to implement it. We did run some tests in the past, cause we thought it would look great with black Kompakt, but in our opinion it didn’t look great visually, and it also introduced some issues with power efficiency. So unfortunately, it’s not something we’re actively pursuing at the moment.
Still, never say never – but for now, it’s not on our roadmap.
hi,
I am thinking about going the digital minimalist route. I use group messaging quite a bit, is there an ETA for this update? Also, I know that side loading is a thing. His side loading available for all apps are only specific apps? If it is the ladder, is there a list of apps that are compatible?, making this switch, as the discussion above indicate, is not an easy one. Are there any helpful pieces of advice that anyone would like to share that they wish they knew while making this transition? Leslie, I use for Verizon and I am wondering if anyone else uses Verizon that has had a positive experience? If so, would you mind letting me know which cell phone plan you paired with the Kompakt?
Welcome to the Mudita Forum We’re glad you’re here.
Yes, we plan on including group messaging in the next update, which is scheduled to come out next month.
You can have a read about what’s planned for that update in an article on our BLOG:
The update has been great. The only things stopping me from getting a second Kompakt for my daughter are:
Custom ring tones.
Better maps
Why would custom ring tones be a deal breaker? Because she gets so many spam calls and texts a day that if they all sound the same she’d have to check her phone constantly and likely miss when it’s actually us or her boss. On the iPhone I reluctantly have her using, she can customize ring tones and text tones so she knows if she needs to check or just let it go.
For maps, she’s a new driver and the maps are pretty awful. When I tried to use it to pick up my mom, which would normally be a 1.5 hour drive, it went some weird way and would have made the drive 2.5 hours, with no way to adjust the route.
It also cannot find most addresses and businesses (or even my house) so it’s incredibly difficult to use, especially if you don’t know an address or location near where you want to go.
One additional thing, I still have the exclamation point as my fourth service bar and cannot use any data, only talk and text. I have puretalk and the NA optimized phone.
@tkbunch Thank you so much for the feedback. Did you know that Mudita Kompakt has a cool feature where you can BLOCK unrecognized numbers? This could be an option for your daughter.
