Three More "SMS" App Bugs in MuditaOS K 1.1.1

Bug #1

  1. Friend “A” has a 1-to-1, several-messages-long text thread with me.
  2. I keep that thread in my Kompakt.
  3. Friend “A” then sends five group text messages to ten other people + me.
  4. Having earlier read all messages in my SMS app, I then get – not surprisingly – a (5) dot in the upper-right corner of the SMS app’s icon on the home screen:
  5. But, when I tap the SMS app’s icon, I see the aforementioned 1-to-1 text thread with friend “A” but DO NOT SEE the group text-message thread from friend “A”!

I then ask relative “B” (who is one of the “ten other people” in step 3) to help me to try to reproduce this bug.

Bug #2

  1. Relative “B” has a 1-to-1, single-message-long text ‘thread’ (if one message counts as a thread!) with me – a message that I earlier sent to relative “B”.
  2. I keep that thread in my Kompakt.
  3. Relative “B” then sends one group text message to one other person + me.
  4. The dot in the upper-right corner of the SMS app’s icon on the home screen then rises to (6):
  5. But, when I tap the SMS app’s icon, I see the the aforementioned 1-to-1 text thread with relative “B” as well as the aforementioned 1-to-1 text thread with friend “A” but DO NOT SEE the group text-message from relative “B” (nor, of course, the group text-message thread from friend “A”)! ← This shows that I was able to reproduce Bug #1.
  6. Relative “B” then sends to me a 1-to-1 text message.
  7. The tally on the home-screen SMS app’s icon rises to (7).
  8. But, when I tap the SMS app’s icon, although the tally drops back to (6) (as expected), I see a second 1-to-1 text message from relative “B”. However, that text message WAS NOT APPENDED TO the original 1-to-1 text message that I had with relative “B”. Instead, a second 1-to-1 text-message entry appears for relative “B” in the list of conversations for the SMS app!

Bug #3

  1. I send a 1-to-1 text message to one of the two entries for relative “B”.
  2. I send a 1-to-1 text message to the other of two entries for relative “B”.
  3. I hear a couple of notification sounds.
  4. I check the home screen and see (8) in the upper-right corner of the SMS app’s icon:
  5. But, I see no new messages from anyone after I tap the SMS app’s icon!

Summary

  • Bug #1: If I have a 1-to-1 text thread with someone and then he or she sends several group text messages to many other people + me, then the ‘tally’ dot on the SMS app’s icon will rise to match the number of group text messages sent, BUT I CANNOT SEE those group text messages!
  • Bug #2: If I have a 1-to-1 text thread with someone and then he or she sends a single group text message to one other person + me and then sends a new 1-to-1 text message to me, then Bug #1 will occur (i.e., I do not get that group text message) AND I will see Bug #2, which is a second 1-to-1 text thread co-existing in the SMS conversations list with the original 1-to-1 text thread! In other words, that sender’s name appears TWICE in the SMS conversations list – once for the original 1-to-1 text-message thread and again for the second 1-to-1 text-message thread!
  • Bug #3: If I have two text-message threads – due to Bug #2 – for the same person within the SMS app’s conversations list and I send a separate 1-to-1 message within each of those text-message threads to that same person, then the unread-messages ‘tally disk’ on the SMS app’s icon will rise by two, even though no new messages appear in either text-message thread and no new messages otherwise appear in the SMS app!

The Madness Continues…

Subsequent to my initial report, relative “B” has confirmed receipt of three additional messages in the group-message thread described for Bug #1. As a result,…

  • I heard three chimes, to match those three additional messages being sent.
  • I now see (9+) in the upper-right corner of the SMS app’s icon:
  • And, I now see a “9+ unread SMS” message on the “Touch the power button to unlock” screen:
  • But, as with my initial report, I cannot decrease this tally by trying to read any unread messages. There are no such messages for me to read!

wow these are a lot of bugs

These bugs plus those that I reported earlier are intolerable. My SIM card now resides in my trusty F1 Orchid until Mudita can kill them!

wow really eh, unfortunate you have to continue going back to the Sunbeam, but it also shows how reliable that phone has been for you for almost 3 years I think

Thank you @kirkmahoneyphd
I sent these over to our team.

Something else that may help the Mudita team: When I had relative “B” – whom I described in Bug #2 – send today a 1-to-1 text message to my Kompakt, only one of the two entries for relative “B” in the SMS app’s conversations list received that 1-to-1 text message.

Although my Kompakt can send 1-to-1 text messages to relative “B” from either entry, only one of the two entries for relative “B” on my Kompakt can receive 1-to-1 text messages from relative “B”.

Put simply with respect to the two entries for relative “B” in the SMS app’s conversations list:

  • One entry can send AND receive 1-to-1 messages.
  • The other entry can only send 1-to-1 messages.

The Kompakt gives receiving ability to only one entry in the conversations list, and it does not matter which entry last had sending activity.

Thank you. They’re working on it.

USEFUL WORKAROUND: After experimentation with the sideloaded Quik app, I have confirmed that it has none of these bugs and therefore that it sufficiently replaces Kompakt’s buggy SMS app. And, I have decided to take a chance on Mudita making the SMS app fully functional – both bugs-wise and missing-MMS-features-wise – eventually … and hopefully in the release after the July release! So, I am keeping my Kompakt and have asked Mudita Support to close my refund-request ticket. (Now I must train myself NOT to tap the SMS app’s icon on the home screen.)

Hello @kirkmahoneyphd, two questions from developers:

  • does group conversation from Bug #1 contain any of numbers blocked on Kompakt?
  • what apps were used to send messages in Bug #2 and Bug #3?

Nice great to hear it has worked out for you Kirk!

Hi, @aleksander.

  • No, none of the telephone numbers among the participants in the group conversation for Bug #1 was blocked.
  • Relative “B” for Bug #2 used the standard text-messaging app – called “Messages” on a cellphone running Google Android 15.
  • I used my Kompakt’s SMS app to send the 1-to-1 text messages in steps 1 & 2 for Bug #3.

I found another bug today in SMS. I got a spam text and prior to opening the text (which would have cleared the notification badger on the SMS app icon), I blocked the number. This kept the number in the “blocked” list but never actually marked the message as “read” so I could not figure out where this mysterious new message was that wasn’t showing in my inbox. Be sure to at least open spam texts before blocking the number to prevent this.

It seems from my experience (and at least one other on the forum) that having any blocked numbers prevents you from seeing group messages.
