I do believe MMS is used to facilitate group messaging but MMS by itself is just about multimedia transmission. Now RCS is being advertised about being capable of group chatting but might be a similar case, not sure. But yeah, if this is an important feature for the user base it’s definitely something to look into. Doesn’t sound like reinventing the wheel.
@kirkmahoneyphd I’m glad Quik is working for u
- The contacts bug is not of Quik, it’s that Mudita Contacts doesn’t have the functions to open “links” from other sideloaded apps so it just crashes.
- Fossify Contacts as a replacement for the default phone/contacts. When you install that from QUIK you can set up the Fossify Contacts app to open the Contact when you click on the name, instead of using the Mudita Contacts app.
Get a third-party launcher, there are ones that support the number indicators for notifications. That way you won’t have to click on the now Dummy sms icon on home
Thanks for all this info, @kirkmahoneyphd. I downloaded Quik and it has no issues pulling contacts from the stock Contacts list. Not sure why that is.
I’ll ask out in the forum as well, unless you know…but have you tried or figured out how to take screenshots? Have you tried or figured out how to “close” apps to free up RAM? I notice apps stay in the same place where they were previously and I believe this indicates that it is still running in the background.
Press volume down + lock button
Open settings → manage apps, force quit
I can’t receive group messages at all. Really lame. If it weren’t for that phone would be perfect for me.
I am fortunate in that I can have an iPhone as backup and am retired. I’ve basically told folks they can send me group texts through the iPhone, but call or text me on MK if urgent.
As I posted above, the sideloaded Quik app (found on F-Droid) lets me receive AND send group messages. I am living with the Quik app instead of Kompakt’s native SMS app until Mudita can fix the many bugs in the SMS app, which apparently will be AFTER the July-2025 update to MuditaOS K.
This makes tapping the SMS app’s icon display an annoying alert that the app has stopped working.
Rather than replace the home screen with a launcher (none of which I liked) that would NOT display the SMS app’s icon or name, I have learned to tap the Apps icon on the home screen…
…and I have arranged my icons on the subsequent page such that the Quik app’s icon (“QUIK”) appears in the same position screen-real-estate-wise as the SMS app’s icon:
So, I still tap in the center-icon position at the bottom of the screen to access text messaging, but I must remember (no longer a big deal) to tap first the “Apps” icon on the home screen.
So glad to see this thread - my phone is inbound in the next few days and I definitely needed a solution to group MMS. This should work great. Thanks for the detailed workarounds!
@brendxn thanks. I did see this way to force quit, but didn’t know if there was an easier way to swipe and close apps like on other androids.
I guess I had taken screenshots but because there is no sound or blink of the screen I wasn’t aware it was happening.
Again, thanks for your help.
No problem if there is a faster way, I look forward to finding out about it as well
@ kirkmahoneyphd How did you manually arrange the apps like this? I have not found a way to reorganize my apps, only disable them from view.
@ryanness, Settings > App Layout contains a visibility slider/switch for each app. I ‘slid’ to the right each switch associated with an app that I wanted to see on the “Apps” screen, and I ‘slid’ to the left each switch associated with an app that I did not want to see on that screen.
I don’t normally use group chats over sms but I did notice that after I imported all my texts from my old phone using “SMS Import/Export” from F-droid, it brought over the group chats I was in and I see that I am receiving texts from all participants just fine. I am sure you can start a group message using another sms app and then switching back to the original sms app.
Simply chiming in that I got my NA Kompakt yesterday and group messaging is a priority for me. I switched from a T9 phone to the Kompakt primarily for the map and keyboard with group messaging. These are the only two features of a smart phone that I really need.
I’ve been using my Kompakt since I received it Tuesday night. So far, I have not had any trouble receiving messages in three separate group chats I am in. I have encountered the bug that the SMS app just crashes if you try to see who all of the participants are in a group chat.
Looks like I have the same problem with it crashing when I try to see who all the participants are in. I just tested receiving and sending in a group chat and that worked. It seems like the only other thing I can’t do is start a group chat. I’m going to keep the phone in the hopes that this, and navigation on maps will be fixed in future updates.
Also just chiming in to say group chat on the North American version is a priority for me as well.
Also priorities for me:
Having voice mail notifications
Lock Screen showing notifications
Haven’t used it enough to know if there’s more. So far weather app isn’t working well for me (it just thinks forever and never shows my data. However I know the temp in Poland sometimes) and maps was pretty useless (it shows me in a big white area with just a dot for the closest town, can’t find any other locations to navigate to) but I’m thinking I might be doing something wrong with maps.
@birdingthru We hear you Our team is working on it
Group Messaging is in the works.
You have to download the maps for your state (or country). I had trouble doing all of the US so I just did a few states. Then the locational dot will appear on the map.
Has anyone been able to have success with group messages (even just receiving them as individual messages – not missing them completely) on the US verizon network? I am stumped. I tried QUIK for a day and still didnt’ receive group messages there, and really prefer the native Kompakt interface. Thanks in advance.
