Group messaging on Kompakt

Yes. If you sideload olauncher or even Niagara Launcher and make it your main launcher, then you can see the sideloaded messaging app instead of Mudita’s app.

Any launcher should work tbh, but I prefer Olauncher because it’s text based and highly customizable. Works better for E-ink.

I have found it interesting to read that some capabilities that are considered basic features in a target market weren’t considered or not know to be important (group messaging, voicemail notifications and ease of access). I recall reading that the north american market was a significant portion of the preorders. Some more market research would have slbeen helpful.
I have been reading that people in european countries use phones differently, often using WhatsApp and Signal for messaging. This makes me wonder why you can’t ‘assign’ the sms spot on the home screen and notifications to a different app that may suit individual users needs more fully.

Will it show notifications by the text if I use a different launcher and SMS app?

I don’t think so. I think you’ll have to modify a few things for the notifications to work.

I sequentially tried Olauncher and Niagara Launcher, setting each one to the default launcher and restarting my Kompakt afterward, but tapping the O at the bottom of the Kompakt – now a habit – kept taking me back to Mudita’s built-in launcher.

Maybe it’s in the interpretation, but my reading of the campaign features was that we’d be able to send long text messages and/or attach images, I didn’t understand the features as including group messaging.

Use this guide to remove disable Mudita Launcher: https://www.reddit.com/r/MuditaKompakt/comments/1ka5hqo/how_to_use_a_kind_of_notification_center_use_a/?share_id=OpJZhf3SUGyIzcruhuNoo&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

Thank you. I see also that these launchers do not support unread-message tallies, so I am not sure that I will continue to try to hack my Kompakt with another launcher.

I have to agree with Kirk on this, when you commit to certain things , they should be available at launch, if you are creating a NA optimized version then those people that backed this project expect what you said you would deliver. Even though this does not affect me I am really getting tired of this from Mudita, if you aren’t going to have something available at launch make that CLEAR, this is your second phone , you made mistakes with the last one, don’t make mistakes with this one. most people are not going to continue being this patient…DO BETTER

Thank you for those suggestions!

  • Textra injects advertising, which is a no-go for me.
  • Simple Messaging’s FAQ says, “Q. Who can I talk to with this app? A. Anybody who has the app or a web browser.” ← another no-go for me.

Thanks again!

We should not have to sideload anything to get group text messaging certaintly not an app thats advertises to you…F that

Even for me I am thinking how long is it going to take them to make changes to their calendar app? That is important to me, you can’t repeat events, can do more than a 5 min notification. When is that going to be fixed? According to the update not IN july,

This one is the Simple Messaging I was talking about: Simple SMS Messenger | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository

The other one is a privacy app stuff.

Fossify Messages is the New Simple SMS Messenger.

The original project developer sold the Simple App Package to a company. And the Simple SMS messenger version in PlayStore (Aurora store) has ads.

So Fossify is the open source fork that has continued their development.
I think Kirk has already tried Fossify Messages and didn’t find it useful.

@kirkmahoneyphd Have you tried Quik

Got it. I wonder what didn’t work. If it was the launcher only

@Jose_Briones He wasn’t seeing some contacts or something related, I haven’t had that issue and I used Fossify Messages before.

I just want to say that I agree with Kirk almost entirely. I also backed the Kickstarter because MMS was supported. Group messaging that works properly is one of the few things that is important to me.
I received my MK yesterday and like it a lot. At this point, I’m just trusting the Mudita team to do right by all of this and get Group Messaging straightened out as soon as possible.

@gezimos: Thank you for the question! I just sideloaded Quik, and it surprisingly made visible (a good thing):

  • two different group text-message threads that I reported elsewhere – as Bug #1 and Bug #2 here – as invisible on the SMS app;
  • five different 1-to-1 text messages that I had marked in the SMS app as spam.

I like these features of Quik that are NOT in the SMS app of MuditaOS K 1.1.1:

  • Can initiate a group message
  • Can decide whether to send that group message to each person individually (SMS approach) or to all persons collectively (MMS approach)
  • Can see all participants in an MMS group message
  • Can select any of many font sizes
  • Can delay sending
  • Can add a signature to the end of messages
  • Can strip accents from characters in outgoing SMS messages
  • Can get confirmation that messages were sent successfully
  • Can silence notifications for messages not from contacts
  • Can give a title to a conversation (handy for MMS group messages)
  • Can customize notifications for an MMS group message
  • Can choose how much to auto-compress MMS image attachments
  • Can choose to send long messages as MMS
  • Can be set to show only mobile numbers when composing a message

Nice touch: Quik generates a tally disk on the SMS app’s icon on the home screen when there are unread text messages, so that saves me from tapping the Apps icon to see whether I have any unread messages. And, Quik removes that tally disk as soon as I have no unread text messages.

Playing with Quik as a workaround to the many bugs in the SMS app, I found this bug in Quik:

I still plan to return my Kompakt + case for a refund, if Mudita Support will allow it, given that the latest announced update to MuditaOS K will not occur until July but will not address the many bugs in the SMS app.

MAJOR UPDATE: After further experimentation with the sideloaded Quik app, I have decided that it sufficiently replaces the missing MMS features in Kompakt’s buggy SMS app. And, I have decided to take a chance on Mudita making the SMS app fully functional – both bugs-wise and missing-MMS-features-wise – eventually … and hopefully in the release after the July release! So, I am keeping my Kompakt and have asked Mudita Support to close my refund-request ticket. (Now I must train myself NOT to tap the SMS app’s icon on the home screen.)
