I have found a solution that works for me regarding group messages not showing up and having a permanent notification number on the sms app. You need to block a number, then go into Settings → blocked numbers and remove it. Literally any phone number will work, you could probably just block and unblock 9999 or something. After doing this my group messages show back up. Not sure why this works but I was trying literally everything and found that this worked.
