Seriously considering returning my Kompakt

@starvin_fish Sometimes, he needs to reeled in. It can get out of hand quickly if not stopped.

We try to be fast and dynamic in this process (which is visible as fist updates are already out, and next are soon to be released) - but please remember that we are not that big team, and for some, more time consuming features it may take some time to be implemented.

If the Android base was open sourced the community would likely be able to fix these issues and directly provide support for the features they would want themselves.

Sorry if I keep bringing this up, but if you did so Mudita would be an exception in the dumb phone community. Neither Light, Boox, Minimal, or Hisense allow their customers to see and contribute to the software on their phones.

A bit late to this, but am I right in my observation you guys built the Music and Calendar apps from scratch? If e.g. you just took an open-source audio player app and changed a bit the interface for e-ink, all functionality would have been there already.

It is absolutely necessary in my opinion, with or without turn by turn. One thing I realized when opening the map app (the maaapp ?) is that it reminds me of traditional paper maps. Sure, it won’t display an itinerary, maybe that’s coming up, but it’s still useful just to know where one is in space.

I don’t know if it’s coincidental, but that’s also kind of a minimalistic use for maps I guess ?

So happy to hear that!

Software Roadmap is under creation. Turn by turn is something we would love to add, but we need to calculate our workforce (as it is quite workload heavy feature), and make list with priorities. So very sorry, but no final decision has been made, yet. :expressionless:

However within weeks, things should clear up step by step.

@Michal_Kicinski, would you please provide some clarity over the prospect of voicemail notifications coming to MK. Rather than repeat the talking points, please find the thread here:

Many thanks.

Not sure about this case exactly, but, yep, we were using here and there open source software to speed up development process of our apps.

This was just what we were able to deliver for the release date. For me it also reminds the first maps on IOS, which were also 2d, without turn by turn.

Yeah, I get that ! In a way, it’s like if you were handed a paper map from a town, and you’d have to look at streets to see where you are and where you’re going. It’s really cool, although it might prove difficult if you’re in a moving car

Yeah not really safe lol

That was the way I navigated for decades. :joy:

Back then, you either pulled over, if you were driving alone, to read the map, or, you would have the person in the passenger seat navigate.

Yeah apart of me is kind of looking forward to trying to use the map to get places lol, seems like a cool challenge lol, can even use it with my kids as a learning opportunity, let them use the map and write down the directions for me :joy:

While I applaud the devotion to making a bespoke solution (especially one that is e-ink oriented) I can’t help but feel mapping/routing is without a doubt one of the truly most complicated apps that can exist on a phone – and it would make so much sense to partner with/contribute to an existing OSS platform so that the ecosystem as a whole benefits.

I could appreciate the idea that you would want such efforts to be a selling factor for the Kompakt but could really imagine contributing to develop an e-ink mode to an existing thing like Organic Maps could make everyone a lot happier while reducing development complexity significantly (avoiding rebuilding the wheel from scratch)

Someone mentioned getting a Garmin Nuvi 57LM for a decent price. So, I went and looked in eBay. I finally found one that had the 2025.20 update, as it includes Alaska in the maps. The 2025.10 and earlier may or may not, but the 2025.20 includes all of North America.

I’m thinking of getting a great MP3 player, too. Instead of having my phone do more, I want to get back to something like the Unix philosophy: A thing should do only one thing and do it well.

That was me, and I did something AMAZING with it today:

I went to United States - OpenMapChest and torrented all five United States regional maps. Once finished downloading, I was left with five .img files. I put an SD card in, created a folder called “Garmin” and placed all five .img files into the folder. I placed the SD card into my Garmin, enabled all five new maps, and disabled the old maps. Viola! My maps are now updated to 5/17/2025!! And whats even cooler is these maps are updated WEEKLY. So I can update again whenever I want- entirely independent of Garmin.

Note: One of the files is a Pacific map which includes Alaska. This is also updated weekly and will work with ANY Garmin with the L or LM in the name.

@kirkmahoneyphd tagging you in case you’re interested. I heard Garmin is starting to expire support for lifetime maps on older devices and this will mitigate that entirely.

Thanks! I never have used the slot on the back of my Garmin DriveSmart 65 with HD Traffic that is for micro-SD cards. If Garmin ever stops supporting lifetime updates on my model, then I will investigate your tip!

This is definitely a very interesting idea. The biggest challenge we see, however, is that as a company we guarantee the reliability of the device – which means we would need to be heavily involved in testing the solutions proposed by the community. It always requires balancing the potential benefits against the costs and resources needed. That said, it’s definitely something we’re actively exploring and would be happy to develop further.
