Seriously considering returning my Kompakt

Blockquote
and it would make so much sense to partner with/contribute to an existing OSS platform so that the ecosystem as a whole benefits.
I could appreciate the idea that you would want such efforts to be a selling factor for the Kompakt but could really imagine contributing to develop an e-ink mode to an existing thing like Organic Maps could make everyone a lot happier while reducing development complexity significantly (avoiding rebuilding the wheel from scratch)

Maps can generally be divided into two main categories:

  1. those designed for navigation while driving (turn-by-turn),
  2. and those intended for orientation when moving on foot.

The maps used in our device fall into the second category. So far, we’ve focused primarily on helping users stay oriented in outdoor environments, rather than providing traditional turn-by-turn car navigation. Which is as you said quite compelling task to create:-/

And yep, You’re generally right, but our approach to partnerships hasn’t been very effective so far, mostly because we’re simply too small for most companies to consider. Hopefully, that will change once we grow.

In any case, we’re definitely focused on ensuring users have the best possible experience when using maps on their phones.

If I may chime in here, living in NYC I never get into cars, I get around exclusively on foot or bicycle, and I never need directions, or orientation unless I am traveling, I always know where I am going in NYC. But, I do often use directions for time estimates, it can be particularly useful for slowing down, when I find that I have the time to walk, rather than ride a bicycle.

The map has also evolved into an operation hours directory, stores had to have rememberable hours, but since most look up the hours on their phone, stores now feel it’s acceptable to have crazy fluctuating hours, and this has driven me to having to look up store hours as well.

Thank you! I’m heading to that website now and will try this when my Garmin arrives. I appreciate the initial advice, as well… so, double “Thank you” is in order =)

I am a 70 year old who has upgraded to Kompakt from a 15 year old Samsung phone and who appreciates what, for me, is a better connection, quality of sound and user interface. I don’t want lots of apps or functions, so this device is ideal for me, especially the 6 day battery life. It took me a few days to get used to the device’s idiosyncrasies and work round the odd glitches but I like the Mudita philosophy and the intention to improve the product. I won’t be sending it back. I pay in cash or by physical card, use paper maps and enjoy occasionally getting lost (how else do you discover something you never knew about?). It’s amazing how easily you can turn what first appears as an annoyance into an opportunity for new experiences - for example I have switched to an ethical mutually-owned bank that still has physical outlets where I can talk to people behind me in the queue and in front of me on the desk. If a shop won’t take cash or physical card payments, I go somewhere else and have a new experience. You meet new people, try new things, and see the world a bit differently. I’m lucky that I never got hooked into social media in the first place, so I don’t know what I’m missing. I just see my friends and family spending inordinate amounts of time being led down addictive rabbit holes. Sorry, must go and water the plants at my allotment. Be kind to yourselves!

@keith What a beautiful and inspiring post! Welcome to the Mudita Forum. We’re glad that you’re here.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Mudita Kompakt! It’s heartening to hear how well the phone fits into your lifestyle and values. Your perspective is a refreshing reminder that simplicity, intentional choices, and a touch of curiosity can lead to a richer, more grounded life.

We especially love how you’ve turned “inconveniences” into meaningful moments of connection and discovery. I can’t tell you how that’s very much aligned with Mudita’s philosophy. Sometimes, I’m surprised how little ‘inconvenience’ people are willing to accept in their lives because they’ve been used to smartphones doing EVERYTHING.
It’s encouraging to hear that despite the initial learning curve and a few quirks, you’ve embraced the device and see its potential.

I’m sure your words will surely resonate with many in our community who are looking to reconnect with what truly matters. Wishing you many more joyful, screen-free adventures, and, most importantly- happy watering at the allotment! :herb: :leaves:
