I have an impression there’s some other volume control in charge, not just the one you set when on a call in a regular way. It appears each time after setting call volume and has speaker icon like it was multimedia volume. I’ll keep testing tomorrow because I could get to hear the other party poorly as well as loud enough in speakerphone mode.
I just tested setting Media volume to minimum, and it had no effect on the speakerphone volume, which I now can confirm is affected by Call volume but NOT by Media volume.
I also ran yet another test with Kompakt Phone app in speakerphone mode vs. a deGoogled Pixel 6 in speakerphone mode, with an FM radio speaker the same distance way from the source cellphone in both situations. The Pixel 6 yet again proved to be much louder in speakerphone mode than did the Kompakt in speakerphone mode.
Update: Here is a screenshot of what I discussed: Media volume at minimum and Call volume at maximum led to no difference in the Phone app’s speakerphone-mode volume when compared to Media volume at maximum and Call volume at maximum.
I ran that Media volume test (min and max) because of what @buiosu posted earlier:
This seems odd, my Kompakt volume seems to operate fine, contolling media when being played, in call, or on speaker phone. All can go down to an acceptible quiet level and loud enough for me. Admittedly the quality of the speaker isnt as good as my Samsung s20 but its not a media orientated device so I wasnt expecting it to be. I would never listen to music through any phone speaker anyway but spoken word is totally fine on my Kompakt, I am enjoying audible through it every evening.
hahaha love the conversation
Excellent to hear this @urszula. The list of reasons to keep the phone has now outweighed the reasons to return it. (Admittedly, this is only after adding Foobar2000 music player, Pocket Casts, Chrono, Futo Keyboard, Futo Voice Input for voice-to-text input) and Obsidian and Signal.)
For the next week of my return window, I’ll now be using the MK exclusively.
If only I could find a way to make the device perform a little faster/snappier.
@damian1 That’s my Krzysiu…He’s Australian
@kirkmahoneyphd Yea, I’m with the others on this. Any chance you can post any videos with the volume. I don’t think you’re getting the volume that’s intended. Unless we have different hearing abilities, which I don’t think is the case.
you’re never going to beat the pixel 6 with the Kompakt. it has higher end stereo speakers, also on the nose canceling… the pixel 6 has active noise canceling with 3 microphones
however, I do believe you are correct in your assessment that max call volume is indeed a lower maximum than music / media max volume despite the software max setting for both being ‘6’ (checked in add). I tested myself and the music which comes with the phone is indeed louder than a call on speakerphone. not by a huge margin but it is there.
I think some of that might come down to the loudness of the source audio as well. a person speaking quieter than the person singing is going to sound quieter on the speaker. but this might be an issue with Mudita not accounting for this variation perhaps and could have an option maybe to boost call volumes a little more if necessary.
but its worth keeping in mind as well that the speaker isn’t super high quality (in comparison to higher end phones), it can only get so loud before it will start distorting
I do not believe that videos can adequately demonstrate the difference, given that the audio portion of a video can accommodate the lower maximum speakerphone volume from the Kompakt and amplify it so that it sounds similar to a higher maximum speakerphone volume from a different cellphone.
If I had an audio decibel meter, then I could run some objective tests. But, my perception, meanwhile, is that the Kompakt in speakerphone mode is not as loud as it should be (when compared to other cellphones in speakerphone mode) and is not as loud as it could be (when compared to podcasts and audiobooks played through the Kompakt’s speaker).
@kirkmahoneyphd This is my Mudita Kompakt on a call at 75% volume [video]
This is gold hahah
Since I have a SPL meter laying around, I ran a quick test to measure the loudness of the ringing sound from Signal/Molly…
This is by no means a professional test as we would probably need to play the exact same sound under the same conditions on both devices, and compare the resulting sound curves.
However, despite being inaccurate at best, it looks like the Mudita’s loudphone mode speakerphone is actually louder than the iPhone 16 Pro Max (76.9 dB vs 60.5 dB)
For consistency, I placed the mic in the middle of the screen since both the iPhone and the mudita are likely using both loudspeakers to produce a stereo sound.
Again, this is a lazy quick test… so take this with a pinch of salt
@simonepsp, what is ‘loudphone mode’? Do you mean speaker phone when on a call?
Yea sorry, I meant speakerphone
Thanks for running this test! Are you also somehow able to compare max call volume vs max music/podcast volume?
Thanks! I have never owned an iPhone, so maybe they tend to run quieter in speakerphone mode than do various Android cellphones that I have owned. Oh, well.
More Research into the Phone App’s Speakerphone Volume
Background
Earlier perception tests (with no audio-decibel equipment) of the Mudita Kompakt and a Google Pixel 6 strongly suggested that the Kompakt’s Phone app’s speakerphone mode’s maximum volume was lower than the Pixel’s speakerphone mode’s maximum volume. This experiment sought to validate the conclusion from those earlier tests.
Method
- I put a working SIM card in my Kompakt and another working SIM card in my Pixel 6, with each SIM card coming from the same carrier in the USA and with a cellular telephone number (CTN) with the same area code and central office or exchange (NPA-NXX).
- I used each cellphone to call simultaneously a number listed at https://documentation.spectrumvoip.com/tools-for-testing/phone-numbers-for-placing-test-calls for what is called the USA Milliwatt test tone.
- I put each cellphone in speakerphone mode.
- I alternated putting each cellphone in hold mode, so that I could compare perception-wise the maximum volume of each cellphone’s speakerphone.
- I also ran the above tests with a Google Pixel 6 Pro in place of the Google Pixel 6.
Results
- The Kompakt Phone app in speakerphone mode played the USA Milliwatt test tone just as loudly as the Pixel in speakerphone mode played it.
- The Kompakt Phone app in speakerphone mode played the USA Milliwatt test tone with much better clarity than the Pixel in speakerphone mode played it.
- These loudness and clarity results were the same with the Pixel 6 Pro used in place of the Pixel 6.
Conclusion
Speakerphone versus speakerphone, the Mudita Kompakt plays the USA Milliwatt test tone just as loudly as the Pixel 6 can play it but with less distortion than the Pixel 6 plays it.
Discussion
- I am pleased with the superior clarity of the Kompakt speakerphone vs. the Pixel 6’s speakerphone, at least with respect to the USA Milliwatt test tone.
- The USA Milliwatt test tone is only one of many ways to test cellphones’ speakerphones, but I no longer see the Kompakt speakerphone’s maximum-volume potential sufficiently inferior to warrant further testing with another Kompakt or to warrant return of the Kompakt without such testing with another Kompakt.
- So, I have asked support@mudita.com to close/withdraw my “exchange” ticket in this matter.
- Special thanks must go to @urszula for performing her own experiments on another Kompakt in speakerphone mode!
Nice so you are keeping the device
Sounds like you’re grounding him for singing too loudly That’s the best test video by far !
Thanks for all the speaker tests and the conclusion. I was thinking the Kompakt speaker was as bad as Pure speaker that owned.
Now I have confidence that my Kompakt order is worthy.
@kirkmahoneyphd You’re gonna get a lot of LOVE from the QA Team Lead for this presentation.
