No voicemail notification on MK?

what about for US Verizon?

@anon80904485
Verizon typically does not send SMS messages for new voicemails by default. I will ask the team what the options are.

If by chance you find out how I can activate them on Free mobile (French provider).

@urszula I’m truly thankful that you went to the trouble to do that digging, but I think we’re addressing different functionality. I spoke to my carrier and they confirmed that they don’t send SMS messages when voicemails are left.

Here are the use cases:

(1) Someone calls and I don’t answer. There is already a notification over the Phone icon/button. Hooray. (So, I don’t need an SMS from my carrier for this.)

(2) Someone calls and my phone is unreachable. Depending on carrier, this should go to voicemail. If I’m unreachable and the can’t leave a voicemail, if it’s important enough, they’ll call back. But if they leave a voicemail, I’ll never know this because there is no notification on the Kompact that someone has left a voicemail.

(3) Someone calls and either I don’t answer or I’m unreachable, so they leave a voicemail. Again, there is no notification on the Kompact that someone has left a voicemail.

I’m referring to use cases 2 and 3. So, if you could, please, ask the Mudita tech team if this is on the roadmap.

@mobl appreciates the importance of this functionality. These updates to the music capabilities are nice-to-haves, but frankly, this voicemail functionality is a must-have/essential.

Thanks.

Free Mobile does not offer direct SMS notifications for new voicemails. Instead, they provide email notifications for voicemail messages. Which I, personally think is SUPER COOL!

To set up email notifications:

  1. Log in to your Espace Abonné.
  2. Navigate to Mon compte > Messagerie vocale.
  3. In the Notification section, choose your preferred notification type (simple or with audio file).
  4. Enter your email address and confirm.

Thank you for checking @urszula. I already have this option enabled for a while. I have access to my email box at work so it really is super useful indeed! But in my case it is useful only when I am at work, since I have a basic SMS + calls plan only, and I am fine with it. So it does not fully resolve the issue for me unfortunately. When I am not in front of a computer, I am not warned :pensive:

@mobl, do you think Mudita will implement this functionality? Urszula has searched high and low for workarounds, but they are, ultimately, workarounds. When I raised this issue with the CEO, he coyly ignored it. The impression I get is that Mudita have no intention of adding this functionality. So, where does that leave me? If someone calls me and I don’t answer, I can see that there’s a missed call, so I can habitually call VM just to see if they’ve left a VM, or return their call. It’s crude, but not expected in 2025. The real problem comes if someone calls me when I don’t have network service. Here, they leave a voicemail, but I’ll never be notified of those voicemails.

I simply don’t understand why Mudita isn’t prioritising this, or why other users aren’t bothered by this.

The only explanation I can find is that in Poland, network carriers send SMS messages for voicemails by default.

@petemeister I’ve escalated this issue with our team as well. I’m awaiting their reply at the moment. Once they get back to me & will post an update.

Thanks @urszula. Hopefully we’ll have some good news today.

@petemeister Yeah I understand. It is true that having an email notification is a life-saver for me, even if I would obviously prefer being notified on the phone, since that’s what it’s made for.
Out of curiosity, I asked chatGPT what it would cost me to write such an implementation myself in the event that the WMI protocol is indeed in question, and the answer is not good news:

2. MWI Listener (Advanced but Possible)

If your carrier uses Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) — a network-level flag — then:

  • You would need to hook into the telephony service layer.
  • That means dealing with Android’s internal telephony APIs, specifically ITelephony, PhoneStateListener, or even RIL (Radio Interface Layer).
  • Your custom ROM may not expose these hooks, so you might need to modify the ROM or rebuild the dialer/telephony app.

:wrench: Feasibility: Medium to Low, depending on ROM
:brain: Required skills: Android system-level dev, AOSP building, Java/Kotlin, and potentially C++ if touching the modem layer

So it’s beyond my knowledge and the time I could devote to it. For the Mudita team, on the other hand, it’ll be a piece of cake, hopefully!

I also don’t understand why we’re so few people complaining. My carrier is widely used and so is yours, apparently. I think people have become very used to the “oh dear, it doesn’t work, too bad I can’t do anything about it” attitude. But I think other complaints will emerge over time.

@urszula Thanks for having escalated!

@urszula hello,
Did the team find out anything on US Verizon?

@petemeister this is absolutely a no go for me. Have you heard anything else?

Just to add some extra info here (mainly for Danish network). I tried to send myself a voicemail while in offline mode. After switched back to online, I got an SMS withing 20 sec about the voicemail. So it works great!

@anon80904485, no, I haven’t heard anything more on this from Mudita/@urszula so far. If the feature is never going to be supported by Mudita, then the only solution I can think of is to record a greeting on one’s voicemail for callers that I don’t use voicemail so they should send me an SMS message instead and I’ll return their call.

It’s clunky and embarrassing, but if I were to keep the MK, that’s what I would have to do.

I really hope this is fixed soon. I’ve been using the MK for a little over a week, and have just run into this issue. My carrier - Public Mobile in Canada - does not have a txt notification option. So I really need the phone to notify me when there is a voicemail. Thank you!

BlockquoteI simply don’t understand why Mudita isn’t prioritising this, or why other users aren’t bothered by this.

You are not alone in your frustration on this. I’d say that the overall lack of ability to turn on notifications for key apps is probably the worst thing about the MK. Even if the email workaround is available with a certain carrier, you can’t turn on your email notifications either. Just like as a workaround to the lack of SMS you can install Beeper or Signal, but you can’t turn on notifications for them.

@bone_naga Our team is aware of this and is currently looking at options.

@urszula, I’ve asked the CEO for clarification on this twice and each time got no answer. I get that he’s busy and can’t respond to every comment, so I didn’t read much into that. However, when I read that the team are “looking into options”, that does rather sound to me like Mudita never planned to support this, and now the team is desperately scrambling for ‘nearest equivalents’ like periodic voicemail polling:

  • Device automatically dials the voicemail number at intervals
  • Uses DTMF automation to check message count
  • Provides actual notification when voicemails exist

This dynamic is different from push notifications which involves notifications being sent from server to the phone when voicemails are left. This puts the onus on the phone to check frequently.

In truth, I’m dismayed not to hear anything actually encouraging on this yet and mostly that something so significant was overlooked at all.
