microSD card reading error, shows 0 bytes

@marko I will remind the team that this is still happening. Thanks for the feedback.

Created an account just to report I’m suffering with the same issue. I’m on the latest build - 1.4.0 The SD card is a Samsung Evo Select, A2, V30, 256 gig, but I have tried two others. All 3 were reformatted multiple times while troubleshooting.

I have a couple side loaded apps, but they are stored on internal memory. The only app that uses the SD card is Qobuz for downloaded music. If I download just a few albums it seems to be fine, but I have 100+ gigs of music that I would like to store on the card because I don’t pay for mobile data. Streaming is not an option.

This issue has caused me to carry around my old phone as a music player and at this point I’m considering just reactivating my old phone and forgetting about the kompakt until there is a confirmed solution. I really want to love this phone, but regularly wiping the card and redownloading music means I’m interacting with my phone way more than I would like.

I have the same issue. Wish I would’ve looked at the forums before I started debugging the issue.

Like other customers I’m running out of space using the Mudita Kompakt as my music player. Putting all the songs back every few weeks is not sustainable. Really hope this gets resolved.

Hi plain.book2357 and welcome to the Mudita Community Forum. Congrats on your first post.

Out of curiosity: what happens exactly in your case? Is it ā€˜just’ empty when you try to play music? Has the card been out of the phone, before you experience this? If so, was the phone turned off?

Looking forward to your reply.

Kind regards,

Marco

Hi Marco,

The issue started after I turned my phone back on, with a notification (I use the InkOS interface) that said there was an issue with the SD Card (64G Kingston). I thought nothing of it at first. I tried reformatting it using the menu the Mudita showed. It told me the card was slow and after formatting was done the card still didn’t work. I tried it again two more times and assumed the card was broken. It was an old SD Card and I threw it out. Shouldn’t have done that last part in hindsight.

Then the next SD Card (16GB SanDisk) I tried did the exact same thing. Including the message that the card was slow. The card didn’t show up when I plugged the Mudita into my Linux computer.

I tried rebooting several times during this process.

Tried one other card, another 16GB SanDisk. It showed the storage capacity in the Storage menu but still told me to format it. Formatting didn’t show the message that it’s slow. But it didn’t show up on my computer when I plugged the phone in.

Finally I tried just formatting it on my Mac (ExFat with Master Boot Record) and not formatting it on the Mudita. That made it show up on my Linux computer and I could add music to it.

On the Storage screen it shows up as completely empty and having a capacity of 0 bytes. Reading the other messages here I’m now just waiting for it to malfunction in the coming weeks.

Thanks for your extensive reply.

My initial guess was people with issues took out the MicroSD card while their phone was on, which is asking for trouble, because as far as I’m aware, these cards are not hot-swappable. This is clearly not the case in your situation.

I just can’t wrap my head around these issues. I have 512Gb SanDisk in my Mudita since August and never has issues. I unmounted it yesterday in the stock file manager (as my main Kompakt gets collected for service), put it the MicroSD/SIM card tray of another Kompakt, accidently powered on the phone as I touched the power button, before the MicroSD/SIM-tray was fully slided back in and feared the worst. But nothing went wrong, all the files are there, I just can’t seem to replicate the (repeated) errors other users are experiencing.

I did nothing special with the card, just removed the SanDisk Software after purchasing it last year, decided to format it in ExFAT and it has been running flawless ever since, regardless whether the card switches phones or is used in a built-in card reader in my laptop.

Not a helpful post, I realize, but I’ll keep trying to find out what corrupts these cards (or at least makes them unreadable on a Kompakt) and will provide feedback to Mudita, hoping this will get sorted soon. Maybe I have to experiment with older and/or smaller cards, to see whether the card gets corrupted somehow.

@plain.book2357 I would suggest that you contact our customer support at [email protected]
They will be better at diagnosing the issue. They will probably ask for you to send logs, so that can looks at exactly what’s happening.

The issue appeared again today on Mudita OS K 1.5.0 when I wanted to plan a route with the built in maps app. It told me that there are no maps downloaded for the specific region, I Checked storage and saw again SD card recognized with 0 B. So sadly it is still not fixed. Please take care of this stupid bug, thank you.

Try a different memory card?

I get the same problem with the memory cards in different devices (cameras).

Some cards, same brand and type, just stop working and don’t get recognized in certain devices,

The SD card works fine for weeks, it is still recognized by the phone and all the data on it is accessible by a Computer. After formatting the SD card from the Computer, it can be used again in Mudita Kompakt. But then the maps app crashes when trying to download map material again, probably because it misses some files on the SD card. This is absolutely annoying. It is an issue loop and I don’t see that it is related to the SD card itself. For me it looks like the file system get corrupted by the phone itself. Also it is not only me facing this problem.

Its a mysterious expensive electronic piece of tiny plastic with no memory, you are going to experience grief, anger, regret, and sadness

I can relate to the frustration!

Just get another card. Life goes on

As you can see, there are other users affected by this. It doesn’t make sense to buy another 10 cards for hundreds of bucks, just to find out that these 10 cards will also not work properly with this specific device. As I said, the card is fine. The Computer is able to handle it, even if the Mudita Kompakt has a different view. I would agree with you, if the Computer would not be able to access the card. But this is not the case. And also the Kompakt can access the card again after formatting the file system. This is obviously no hardware related issue.

I certainly cannot justify paying the price for a tiny piece of plastic, I mean, really?

The kompakt shouldn’t come with a memory card slot. this is just a really weird thing to spend any effort on, memory cards.

@MicKitten maybe just wait and the problem will resolve itself?

For me waiting doesn’t help. It happened around 5 times since October 2025 and even after a week without doing any action, the card was still not usable. Formatting the SD card with exFAT file system is the only thing that worked.

And after you do this formatting, are you saying that it will work for some time & then break again? I’m just trying to get a clear picture so I can pass all the info on to our team.

I have a similar problem. I formatted the card in MacOS to ExFAT. It worked fine for 3 weeks, and then it says I don’t have a card. 0 bytes. Even though the computer reads all the data on the card.

So, it does work for sometime & then, out of nowhere stops?

thats exactly what happened to me either
