Kompakt No Longer supported in Australia

@mot & @GlitchLife Unfortunately we have not received any confirmation from the networks- either way. So, we have removed the ability for purchases from Australia & New Zealand. Apologies if this is not what you hoped to hear, but the situation remains as it is.

Just an update as I recently switched to Moose mobile which runs on the Optus network. The Kompakt can’t connect with this provider either.
My hopes of using the Kompakt again are starting to vanish…

@renaudlb Have you tried manually connecting to the network?

This is so incredibly disappointing. I literally discovered this phone tonight, googled if it’s available in Australia, stumbled on this thread, and lo and behold, I can’t buy it.

Why on earth would Mudita make a product, then lock out millions of potential customers? I guess I’ll keep looking for a dumb phone

This was not intentional. Mudita Kompakt was available in Australia and it did work on all the networks. I personally tested it over 5wks on Optus November/Dec 2025 while traveling in the Gold Coast, Adelaide and Canberra. We even received the RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) for electrical products. However, towards the end of 2025, several users reached out to us & reported that they were getting text messages from their network providers that there were changes to the Australian networks which would block phones that didn’t support band 28, even though the phone worked perfectly well on other bands that were available in Australia & New Zealand.

Hi @urszula , I haven’t tried. Are there specific instructions i can follow to do that ?

To connect manually just head over to SETTINGS>>>>Network & Internet>>>> then find this setting:

I think it’s set to automatic by default- if you toggle off you should get the manual settings.

@urszula just wanted to mention Iā€ve had the Kompakt in New Zealand for about 9 months and it still works fine.

@miguelnewzealand Thank you for the feedback. I also used my Kompakt in Australia without issues, however, since several users have reported that their service has been cut off & the fact that we have not been able to get a clear answer from network providers, that’s why, out of the abundance of caution we’ve stropped selling it in the region.

If it’s of any use to anyone (or Mudita), I had this issue with another phone that was being blocked by some of the networks in Australia. Speaking to the telcos was pointless; they couldn’t tell me why it was being blocked, it just wasn’t on their ā€œallowā€ list (and all other devices were being blocked by default). What I have learned - Telstra seems to be the best network for imported phones, as they have their own algorithm that uses a form of intelligence to determine if the device is compatible (rather than just blocking it as the other telcos do because the device is unfamiliar).

More importantly, as a customer of the telco, I felt it was unfair that they were blocking the use of my preferred device that met the network requirements, so I logged a case with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) in Australia. This was super helpful, as it provided me access to a case manager at the telco who investigated and raised my case with the engineers. They decided that my device was incorrectly blocked, and it works fine on 2/3 networks here now.

I’m not sure if this is helpful, as the Mudita doesn’t support Band 28 (which is an explicit requirement of all telcos in Australia), but I’ve included the detail in case it helps someone

I went to a Vodafone shop last night and asked for more information. They said it was because of a hardware issue associated with the closure of 3G in Australia, and suggested the other phone companies were likely to stop supporting it as well. Very frustrating.

Welcome to the Mudita Community Forum, @gmmurphy .

I can imagine that’s very frustrating. Have you tried 4G (VoLTE) with Vodafone? Have you checked your network settings to use and prefer VoLTE? Otherwise you could also manually select a network to see which one works (roaming in your own country, so be aware of a little bit more additional subscription costs). I believe Optus works out of the box and I’ve seen a post (but apparently I can’t find it anymore) that there are others as well. There are several Aussies (I’m from the EU) on the forum who can tell you exactly what will and what won’t work. Mudita is a aware of the issue and has (had?) purchases to Australia put temporarily on hold.

Edit: found the post (didn’t see your where following up the post I was looking for, for reasons unknown to mankind. See the comment of @lancerabbit , a few posts up).

@urszula Just a thought, for the Australian users, do you know or could you check whether support for Band 28, which isn’t currently supported, could be added by an update of MuditaOS K? Or is it a hardware limitation?

Also, I would like to request anyone posting ā€˜My Mudita works fine’ to also post which Telco operator your using and preferably in which region of Australia or New Zealand you’re situated. That’s probably much more useful than ā€˜My Mudita is working fine in Australia’.
