Kompakt No Longer supported in Australia

My Kompakt has also been blocked, which was purchased only around October. I am with iiNet/TPG on the Vodafone network. If the issue is not resolved, will Australians be able to return their Kompakt for a refund? When purchased, there was no indication that it would not work with certain carriers in Australia. Will switching networks be a long-term solution?

I’m sorry to hear this,
I have OPTUS & mine still works fine. However, I will ask the team what could be done in this case.

It would be appreciated if we could get some clarity or closure on this matter. It has been nearly two months since this issue was first raised, and we still haven’t received an official response from Mudita.

The concern itself is quite simple: the Kompakt does not support long-range Band 28, which is required in Australia to ensure emergency call coverage in remote areas. All major Australian mobile networks are now structured around 4G/5G Band 28 for broad coverage and emergency call capability after the 3G sunset.

The emergency test calls mentioned in this thread don’t really address the core issue. Yes, the device works in the vast majority of situations, but Australian providers require phones to offer the widest possible coverage specifically for emergency use. This is about rare but critical scenarios where another phone might be able to make an emergency call, but the Kompakt cannot.

Given this, the key question is whether Mudita was aware of this limitation before beginning sales in Australia. Some form of acknowledgment or official response would be very helpful, especially as other providers may, and likely will, adopt similar requirements in the future.

I’ve pinged the team about this. We really appreciate your patience while we look into solutions for this issue.

Hi, I’m quite keen to buy one of these. I’m based in QLD. Based on this thread it looks like they’re not able to work or be purchased in/delivered to Australia? Is that the case?

Hi. We’ve taken the option off the table for now, until our team gets some feedback about what’s happening with the network connections in AUS & NZ.

Thanks @urszula. Do we have a rough time estimate on how long that will take?

@iddap As I mentioned above- We contacted the customer support teams of all three network operators, however, we were not able to obtain clear or conclusive information from them.
As many of our users in Australia and New Zealand are aware, the Mudita Kompakt does not support LTE Band 28. While this specification has been transparent from the start, we understand how frustrating it is when carrier network updates impact your device’s performance.

Due to the 3G shutdown and new Australian regulations regarding emergency calling, some local carriers are now blocking devices that lack this specific band.

If your usage of the Mudita Kompakt has been impacted by these changes, please contact our support team at support@mudita.com for further assistance.

Hi

I just want to add that Mudita has not been transparent from the start, as the ad page for the mobile phone itself writes the following (I’ve copied and pasted):

" Global Optimized
This version features network certifications in Europe, the US, Australia, and New Zealand, including FCC and PTCRB, ensuring dependable connectivity when traveling to North America, Asia, and South America.
"

It literally writes, this phone works in Australia. For all of us who purchased this phone at the end of last year (and in my case mid-December) we should get a refund because the product advertisement is not true. I’m devastated to find this forum post and that my phone won’t work here for much longer when I have had this phone for less than 1 month. I know under Australian consumer law mis-leading consumers in advertisements is a wrongdoing.

It does work in Australia. I’m on the OPTUS network & my phone works just fine. I haven’t gotten any notices from OPTUS that they will stop supporting it, even after the new year. However, I know that’s not all providers. Some users have reported that they received notice that their phone will not function without BAND 28- which we have been open about from the very beginning. We’ve mentioned it on our website & on Kickstarter, and Indiegogo. PLUS, there have been questions about it on the FORUM since we started marketing Kompakt & we’ve been upfront on our FORUM, on REDDIT & on our socials that we do not have Band 28 support.

@urszula If it still works in Australia, where can I purchase? I’m on Optus so keen to use. Thanks.

Also, can these issues be solved by a firmware update, or does this require new hardware to resolve?

Hi again

Please look up the ACCC which operates and governs all businesses, international and local, regarding website sales in Australia.

You claim on ā€œthe websiteā€ it says the Kompakt won’t work in Australia, but where? Because as I copied from the direct advertisement, it says it will work in Australia.

Writing on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, websites I haven’t even heard of and are not even linked to the product page, mean nothing in regards to informing consumers of the specifications of a product they are buying through your website. When it comes to advertising in Australia all information in every piece of advertising material must be correct, otherwise the ACCC can impose fines on the company. Stating there are social media posts on Reddit or in other places like this forum, are NOT good enough to meet the consumer protection guidelines by the ACCC regarding misinformation in the direct advertisement on the product page. Mudita only needed to be correct and open in 1 place, that being the advert product page. Which as I have pointed out, it is not.

Given Mudita has had this false advertisement up on the product page for months (the only place that matters regarding consumer laws in Australia governed by the ACCC). Can Mudita please state an official response in regard to this hardware update needing to happen on the phone, or what process exists for refunds/partial refunds based on when we purchased the product.

I that damage control is happening with these forum posts, but anyone can google the ACCC and review the consumer protections that exist for everyone in Australia buying anything online or in a shop… so please get some official word from Mudita asap and formally notify consumers through their contact details.

@CatsPhone

Thank you for the feedback,
Can I please ask when you purchased your Mudita Kompakt and when it stopped working for you?

Any updates on when we can buy the Kompakt in Australia again?

@mot I have an OPTUS sim card & my Kompakt works fine. However, (like we mentioned above) some users have reported getting text messages from their providers that their phone will cease to work. We did reach out to the network providers, but unfortunately, we have not heard back with any concrete info. If you do need to get a replacement screen, please reach out to our Mudita Customer Service at support@mudita.com.
Our team members will be able to help you out.

Hi, Here just to say that I’m also waiting for some updates with connectivity before purchasing in Australia.
