inkOS: Text Based Launcher with Notifications for Mudita Kompakt

@tilmanbergt

There are some limitations, only camera, phone and clock are allowed and are preset. Camera was working for me but I use it for the notification window.

I was aiming for a super simple version with not too much customization, that’s why I removed some existing features that the original app had.

The option to open any app you want with left, right and clock will come in next update. I already have fixed this. I’m just working on other improvements so can’t release it immediately.

I’ve also decided to allow users to open the app drawer with the swipes. Even though myself I’m against it, hence why I put it in the settings

Hope this answers your question

thanky ou so much for your thorough reply. I fully understand and still the launcher is a welcome improvement for me. I was just not sure, if I missed some option or way to do it. Feel absolutely free to design this following your own design philosophy: it resonates a lot overall.

I also enjoy your launcher very much and thanks for that.
The only thing I miss is the ability to see the date.
And if there was an option to click on the date to see the calendar I would already have everything I need.

Fair enough. I was going to get the LP3 but sideloading and the e-ink screen is such a game changer. I have a lot of faith in the future for the mudita to be the perfect minimalist phone especially with the community we have on here. The only real issues I have right now is the E-ink screen not being optimal for reading and NFC payments. Every other issue I have fixed with sideloading, the reduction in screen time on my phone has been incredible already.

No problem! I realized that I can edit the app to remove any feature I don’t like and quickly build an apk for myself

Glad you’re enjoying the launcher, I hope I can make the next update in a week or two.

@janlo
Date was part of the original app, but it was causing issues in some small phones (stacking widgets). I didn’t want to deal with that, so I removed it.

Currently trying to figure out a better widget system, as I plan to bring the date back and add some more simple widgets in the future.

@meowimacathaha For me the phone screen on time hasn’t changed much from my previous device, it was already low to begin with.

Hi, I’m a Spanish speaker and I’ll use a translator to try to say what I think about InkOs. I don’t have a minimalist phone, in fact I have a Samsun S22, but for a while now I’ve been interested in using it as a dumb phone, I used several launchers, but none felt really minimalist and useful at the same time, until I found Niagara and it was an app that I hadn’t wanted to change until now (although I hate not being able to remove the icons and it being just text). At the release of Light Phone 3, I was fascinated with the look of the interface, to the point that I started looking for something as similar as possible, without any result, until I saw in a recent video on youtube the name of this launcher and decided to try it. I am very excited about the simplicity it has, the pure essence it makes me feel and the real minimalism. I am very pleased. Still I have 2 requests that I hope can be, minimally, taken into account for a future update. As I come from Niagara, I used that launcher hiding all the apps, in the list there was nothing, if I needed something that was not in my 8 main apps, I used the search bar by swiping up, I agree with not having an app drawer, but I think a solution to that is a search bar that makes you more aware of what you want to open and use. My other request, is that I noticed, that the notification bar, even if you select the option to hide it, if you swipe it down and turn it back up, you can still see the notification bar if you slide it down and hide it back up, it doesn’t disappear and stays fixed again, it’s something very minimal, but I would like to share it. It’s a project I have a lot of faith in and I’ve been like crazy looking for a non-existent update or a modification made by the community hahhaha, I’m looking forward to the next update. Thank you very much for this contribution! Greetings from Venezuela!

Psdt: I forgot to mention that I also want an option to lock the screen with double tap please!!! Thank you very much cool developer, tq

Thanks so much for your kinds words, it makes me very happy that people are using the app in other phones as well.

This forum is mostly for Mudita Products, but I assume you found it on Google because they still haven’t indexed the github repo in Google Search. I’m gonna try to answer you anyway.

  1. I know some people prefer searching that having an appdrawer, but I tried to keep this app lightweight that’s why there’s no search at the moment. It could be possible that a simple search is added in the future, but not in the upcoming update.

  2. I’m not able to understand your second issue with Notifications without seeing a screenshot. If you’re talking about notification window, that can be disabled by the “Notification Window” switch in Settings/Notifications.

  3. The option to lock the screen with double tap will come, I’m not sure I can do it for this update. But I saw other people requesting it.

I will notify the users soon with what updates are coming in v0.2

I found it through a youtube video from Reysu’s channel. It’s ok if I didn’t explain myself very well, but I found a temporary solution that doesn’t bother me, so it’s ok!
Regarding the search bar or a future app drawer is fine if it is not added in the near time, just knowing that there is the possibility of being added is more than satisfactory for me. Same with the double tap to lock. I understand the work behind updating the app and that there must be patience, but as I commented, with knowing that there will be updates and improvements, it is a great joy.
Sorry if I’m not fully understood, but I don’t speak English.
Thank you very much for taking the time to develop the app and respond! Have a nice day and I look forward to hearing more from inkOs <3

@jcf03 Oh thanks for letting me know, I’ll check out his video.

I’m not sure if you saw that the full app-drawer is currently located in settings. There u have all the apps. But in next update I’ll allow for users to access app-drawer with gestures (left, right or tap on clock, date).

And no worries, I also understand Spanish well but I can’t write it or speak it well
Stayed tuned for some nice updates! You can follow the development in github .

Already installed, great job! Notifications with the asterix works well except the Phone app. Missed call is not shown on the launch screen

@ovy I haven’t been able to figure that out yet. Basically what happens, the mudita phone app doesn’t send the standard “phone” notification which would include the Name/number and the description of the notification. It only sends x missed call. I’ve tried to custom write this and record that notification, but it keeps deleting them after the call is opened or ended.

I confirmed it’s an issue with this app because it works fine in other android devices that I tested.

I’m gonna give it one more try to find a fix for the upcoming! But can’t promise anything.

Are there any plans to get this on F-Droid or another app store?

You can get it on F-droid but it’s not on the official list so you have to add the repo:
https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/repo

F-Droid / Settings / Repositories / [+]
Then add that link or scan the qr code that’s on that page and it should appear on the list when you search “inkOS”.

I’m gonna try to push it to F-droid official list and maybe to PlayStore.

Thanks @gezimos, I am using inkOS on the LP3 right now.

@gezimos I have’t tried inkOS yet because I need a tutorial on how to switch launchers permanently, but this looks drop-dead amazing. You say you’ve only been at this since May? You’re a natural.

The only thing I can think is that it would be useful to have discreet cellular and wifi signal strength indicators. Still, this has delivered a much unexpected dose of delight.

Thank you!

@petemeister Thank you. I have background in ui/ux and with the help of github copilot you can make changes very fast. Also like mentioned in the first post this is a fork of other existing open source apps so the core was already there I just removed features I didn’t like and added new ones I wanted.

Here’s how to disable the default launcher:

You can enable the status bar during onboarding or in settings and you’ll have the bar at the top with the cellullar and wifi indicators.

@evowl No problem! glad you like it, I have removed the set as a default launcher text that appears on home because I understood some LP3 users want to use is as an app not as a default launcher. Next release Should come in a week or two

@gezimos, I installed inkOS and I must say, it’s a joy to use and so nice to have notifications again!

However, I have noticed one issue relating to notifications. If you receive a message, let’s say in Signal, when the phone is idle, the notificatioin is shown on the launcher. Hooray. However, I was playing some audio on Foobar2000 when I received an audio notification. There was no visual indication on the launcher. When I checked Signal, there was an unread message. So, perhaps there’s an issue here to be resolved.

First, I’m glad you’re liking the launcher

Have you turned on these settings in Settings → Notifications:

  • Media playing asterisk
  • Media playing name

Because the media notification is separate from the message notification on purpose, because audio apps sometimes send other types of notifications and this way it’s cleaner.

Also have you added that app in the allowlist? (when u choose at least one app the allowlist gets activated).

I just got foobar2000 and it’s working on mine, so check your config as advised above.

For the Signal and other apps that receive notifications from “abroad” there are issues because of the lack of Google Play Services, and sometimes Duraspeed puts the apps to sleep, so u have to open them up once in a while to keep them awake. Signal is not that bad, Whatsapp goes to speed very often.

And this is not something I can fix, the Launcher is literally just showing the hidden notifications. So if it’s not showing it’s not there in the phone.

Quick question for @gezimos or anyone using InkOS and Kompakt’s SMS app: does the notification work for the native sms-app in InkOS?

Thank @gezimos for the detailed reply. I’ve added selected apps to the allowlist under Notifications and will see how it goes. Hip hip hooray.
