I just factory reset my device and GPS is no longer working, in the native app or in Organic Maps. I have Location Sharing on and enabled for Maps. It just says “GPS unavailable.” I’ve gone through troubleshooting in webadb and cannot find any obvious errors, it’s all turned on it just can’t find it even outside with clear view of sky. Before it was working even inside my house.
I really want to love this device and there’s a lot I do love about it but I am having so many bugs that compromise basic functionality, I am seriously considering a return if I cannot get the GPS to work at all.
Please make sure you followed these steps:
Turn on “Use your current location”
Go to the Maps or Weather app and select the “Share” or “While using the app” option
I had all the settings properly enabled. However, after a few hours outside today, I noticed it randomly started working. I am wondering if it needs a decent amount of time outside without obstructions (more than 10-15 minutes I had tried) before it can figure out the first connection? Or perhaps it needed to be restarted a few times to finally work? Hopefully it remains connected this time.
I also have all the settings setup as expected. It does work sometimes but doesn’t update very quickly at all. This happens when I am outside as well. Is the GPS signal weak on the device? it sounds like that may be the issue. I have GPS in my car so I only use it when walking around but it would be super helpful to have it update more often. Not sure if that could be done in a software update or not
We’d like to clarify how GPS works on Mudita Kompakt & that Mudita Kompakt uses pure GPS, meaning it relies solely on signals from satellites. This approach ensures that your location data stays completely private and never leaves your device.
Unlike most smartphones, which often combine GPS with Wi-Fi, cellular, and third-party services to speed up location detection, Mudita Kompakt is designed differently. We made a conscious decision not to use those additional sources in order to protect your privacy and maintain our commitment to mindful technology.
As a result, acquiring a GPS fix may take a little longer—especially in areas with limited sky visibility, but we believe the trade-off is worth it for those who value security and simplicity.
I hope this clears up some issues people had with the ‘speed’ of the GPS. And, as always we’re love getting feedback as we continue to improve the experience.
I’m still having this problem. I just no joke spent the past four hours outside on a clear day and the gps never worked; it immediately says “GPS unavailable.” I tried checking my location sharing and permissions settings, toggling airplane mode on and off, offline mode, even restarting the phone. It still says “GPS unavailable.”
A few years back, I used a Garmin handheld GPS for geocaching and I strongly suspect that resetting the device necessitates re-downloading the orbit and satellite information (almanac) before acquiring a position. The time it takes seems to match the transmission cycle of this data (every 12.5 minutes).
You can read more about it here: Time to first fix - Wikipedia
If this is the case, it could be a good idea to communicate this to the user before performing a reset.
Grasping at straws here, but this worked for me when I first received my Kompakt:
Settings…Location Sharing
Turn on Use your current location
Under both Weather and Maps, share “While using app”
Settings…System…Date and Time
Manually set the Date/Time
(I may have set “network time” for a bit, letting Wifi provide the time)
Weather app…Locations
Ensure a city/town near you is in the Default Location (believe I was using wifi)
I used Wifi to download my local map under the Maps app
Turned off Wifi (although using cellular service should work as well)
Then I went back to use GPS-provided time:
4a) Settings…System…Date and Time
Set time automatically Use GPS-provided time (my current setting)
GPS started working for me soon after the steps above.
I’m not sure which one or if most of them are necessary? I think “Date/Time” is important to GPS? I’m thinking a checken/egg syndrome . GPS needs your date/time to get an accurate location, yet if it doesn’t know your location, it can’t accurately get the time. Eventually it figures it all out.
While out hiking I’m frequently in Offline+ mode since cell service can be spotty and why waste the battery? The GPS appears to be quite accurate on my downloaded map (like within 10’ or 3 meters). I drove 300 miles or 480 klicks this week, and at my new
location, the GPS performed flawlessly, already having an accurate date/time and knowing “sorta” where I was on the planet.
