False advertising

False Advertisement for American users: Kompakt isn’t a supported device on two of the three large carriers in the US and … returns near impossible.
Let me begin by saying I want this device to work for me! I love it and the basics of calling and some texting was working for me… however, I don’t get all mms texts and I think this is because data with not work on my phone. I called AT&T and they said that this is not an approved device. Does mudita have any plans on getting on the approved device lists for Verizon and AT&T??? Other wise they are selling this device under false pretenses. Ain’t nobody wanna jump through alll these hoops to use your phone-! Please, get this device approved on US carriers or send those of us who can’t use it a paid return label and give us our money back.

In the same boat as an AT&T customer, and I totally agree that this is false advertising.

If you’re OK with risking an unstable solution that may break again without warning you may be able to get it to “work” by going to an AT&T store and doing what I did here: Mudita Kompakt does not work with AT&T

My plan is basically to see if I can get away with this hacky/unstable solution, and if not, just switch to T-Mobile…

A network provider that is forcing me to buy another phone I would avoid. It’s a real example of companies greed and pure capitalism

@Ecokafenio Thank you for sharing your experience so openly & I am so sorry that you’re having these problems. We completely understand how frustrating it is to face network compatibility issues, especially when you’re genuinely excited about a new device. It’s clear you wanted Kompakt to work for you, and we’re truly sorry it’s been a challenge so far.
In October 2024, we conducted radio tests of the global version of Mudita Kompakt in the U.S., and it successfully connected with major networks like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, as well as MVNOs such as Lyca and Ultra. We also went through the PTCRB certification process and ensured that the North American version of Kompakt includes an extended band range to maximize compatibility.
That said, the U.S. wireless ecosystem can be particularly difficult to navigate. Unlike in many other countries, the major U.S. carriers (especially AT&T and Verizon) have created a closed ecosystem where they control which devices are “approved” for use on their networks.
Can you please help me understand what type of issues you’re having? There are users on this forum that have successful set up their Mudita Kompakt with both Verizon & AT&T, so maybe it’s just a setting issue.

My girl and I got the kompakt and she can’t use it with her AT&T, which is a bummer. Can’t return because she’s past the return window, gave it her best shot for 3 weeks but couldn’t send out or receive mms a lot of the time.

There are several users on this forum that are having issues with the basic functions of this phone on AT&T and Verizon. For me it was that my data would not work and some sms texts would not come through. AT&T flags this device as unsupported so it will “work” but they can choose to restrict how it works. I think Mudita really needs to be in contact with American providers AT&T and Verizon to get on their approved devices list- in fact you owe it to us because you advertised your device as working under these carriers. It’s a small ask for those of us who love this device, want it to work and supported this product very early on. Otherwise advertise that it’s only compatible on T-Mobile and make it right for all of us that have to jump through hoops for a device that was supposed to work right out the box.

Capitalist greed is rampant in America… that’s not the point. Mudita advertised that this phone would work with my provider and my provider as well as Verizon have it marked as unsupported

I had the opposite experience… I took my Verizon SIM card out of my iPhone and put it into the Kompakt and it worked immediately, with absolutely no issues. PNW if that matters. Are you using a physical SIM card?

AT&T seems to work fine on my Kompakt. Perhaps it is not ‘approved’ by AT&T, but then is that what matters??

US Verizon user working well here too, no hiccups. Took the sim out of my Samsung and into the Kompakt.

I feel bad for all the people struggling to get their phones to work! It is unfortunate. Is the problem exclusively with esim?

The problems are not exclusive to ESIM, mine is not working correctly with physical SIM activated in a supported phone.

I’m really curious why it “just works” for some people on Verizon/AT&T. All the issues I’ve had are due to the phone not being officially registered with AT&T, which will be the case for everyone, right?

Could it have something to do with the specific plan one has with AT&T? I do know that I’m on an older / legacy plan they don’t sell anymore, but I don’t see why that would affect whether the IMEI is recognized / the resulting APN configuration.

I just took a plan with US Mobile, which does AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon - basically an independent. They were very flexible and helpful, and the price is low (perfect for a dumb phone). There was never any question as to whether the phone was supported - got the physical SIM card and it just worked. My first ever cell phone, and pretty easy to get started.

No affiliation with US Mobile.

Thanks for the intel re: US Mobile @rogerh113 ! I’m strongly considering making the switch.

I understand US Mobile has the ability to use each of the three major US carriers under the hood, which they have their own names for. Which of these do you use with US Mobile: AT&T (Dark Star), Verizon (Warp), or T-Mobile (Lightspeed)?

I’m wondering if there would still be any issues with using AT&T’s network via US Mobile. I’m guessing not, but still curious.

Hi, I use AT&T. There is a tool they have to determine optimum service carrier in your area. My area was supposedly T-Mobile, but 10 miles away was AT&T. Since I had already received an AT&T SIM I just stayed with that. Getting a strong signal on AT&T so things seem good.

Hopefully US Mobil will work well for you, and you can move past the carrier choice and just start enjoying the Kompakt.

Having call volume quality issues on AT&T.

@evowl After some research, it looks like it’s a provider issue. This is what AT&T does when they don’t want to accept a device.

I know some people are on contracts and I understand switching isn’t always great but I’ve been using Tello with my Kompakt (used it with a prior Nokia as well) and I have no issues at all with the phone. Tello is also much cheaper than a lot of options. I’m in a rural area of Michigan and don’t have issues with service (Tello uses tmobile). If you still want to use the phone and are able to switch I’d recommend it, porting numbers is super easy.

(not in anyway affiliated with Tello, just wanted to provide an option, though I know that wasn’t the main point of the thread).

Not a solution, but good information to have for anyone with this problem:

I have a data-only plan with t-mobile that works seamlessly. It’s not advertised, but I was able to get it through the chat on their website. Just ask for the MU30TI plan. 30GB of data per month for $10 per month. I had them just send me a physical SIM. I didn’t have to do any special setup; just put the SIM in the slot and it worked.

Hello @Urszula, I know that a lot of time has passed since this was brought up, but I have new info. I finally switched providers from AT&T to T-Mobile because of this call volume quality issue on my North American Kompakt. Mind you, I haven’t been using it these last 6 months because it wasn’t possible with the poor call volume, but I recently bit the bullet to switch because I wanted to make it work. The call quality is no better than before. It is still very very quiet. This is still observable from the previous video test I did when I compared the music player speaker volume to the call volume on speaker phone. Having gone through all the trouble of switching service providers, this is really disappointing. I can say with certainty, this is not a provider issue. So now what can I do? I really wanted this to work as intended; a distraction free phone for messages and calls. But if the call volume quality is really so quiet, it won’t work out for me. Have you made any headway in the last 6 months on this? Any new ideas or developments on your end with this issue? Could it be that I got a “bad” device?
