Fading E-Ink Cells/Display in Sunlight

I bought the official screen protector from the shop, at the end of february. This is the new version.

To sum up :

  • black Kompakt (bought in february)
  • official screen protector (new version)
  • official green case
  • occurring at moderate temperatures (around 20 °C) in direct sunlight within a few seconds (France / spring) – I mean, I start getting “holes” in the picture after a couple of seconds but obviously it takes some more time to really because super blushed – when I witness this, I try to put the screen away ASAP, in case there is some permanent damage eventually (no idea if that’s the case)

@bidinou Thanks for the quick reply.

Circumstances are the same here (The Netherlands). I will try if I can reproduce the same with exactly the same configuration. I don’t come outside normally, as due to health issues I’m mostly bound to my home, but I do have a backyard where sun shines fuĺly in the afternoon and I can get there in my wheelchair.

Does it improve when you’re in the shadow or inside or do you to refresh your screen or reboot your phone?

I can imagine @smuch, thanks for your reply though.

Yes. If I move the screen out of the sunbeams and refresh the screen, it gets better. No need to reboot.

It’s the same with and without screen protector, I’m afraid.

@bidinou, it looks like we get the same results in broadly similar conditions. Using a screen proctector or a case doesn’t seem to make a difference. You use a green case. I don’t use a case.

There is one last thing I’m going to try. I’m waiting to hear from Mudita’s customer support/services team if they’ll lend me a white case. Then I’ll conduct the same experiments to see if it makes any difference to this issue. (White reflects light, so perhaps it’ll help change the thermals.) If it helps then I’ll continue using the MK. If it doesn’t help, then I’m afraid it’s the final nail in the coffin for me and the MK. That would be a shame.

Either way, the environmental conditions are so narrow that the combination of e-ink with the materials used were a poor engineering choice. The 2nd edition of the MK (if there is one) needs to consider this issue.

Yep, that’s unfortunate. I’ve tried 5 e-ink tablets (reMarkable 1, 2, Onyx Boox Note 3, Go, Max) and never witnessed this phenomenon.

I am pretty surprised because weather conditions in France, in spring, are far from extreme.

I’ll stick to the Kompakt, though, if I am confirmed this is temporary and makes no damage.

Because… Well. This is my all-time favourite phone by far.

Perhaps I’m missing something but I don’t see how it can be temporary. What is strange is that I don’t remember encountering it last Spring/Summer when I received the device when it was new. So, I suspect it may only get worse, not better.

Let me ask you this: are you prepared to put up with this issue every Spring and Summer?

If it’s a “progressive illness”, indeed not. I had assumed I hadn’t noticed it before due to the season – not that the hardware had deteriorated – and I am extremely meticulous – too much according to my partner. Let’s wait for the official reply !

Agreed, my friend.

Oh wow, I live in the UK too and had the exact same issue over the weekend. I kept thinking there was something wrong with my phone and kept restarting it, only for it to happen again. Glad to see it’s been happening to others too, should it be happening?

Thanks for confirming the issue, @jdot. It certainly shouldn’t be happening.

I have a new white case on the way. I’ll expose it to the same conditions (as far as I’m able to replicate them) and see if makes any difference. I presume you don’t have one to test it to see if helps.

As mentioned, if the white case helps, I’ll keep the phone. If not, I’m afraid it’s the death knell.

Well, I applied the white case and, I’m afraid, the results are not good. The conditions when taking these photos were 16ºC (sunny), in Oxford, UK.

See images for results.

Without a case:

With a case:

Behind a window (in direct sunlight):

I tested behind glass to see if the reduction in UV (through glass) might provide any insight. There is the greenhouse effect to be considered which makes the spot behind the glass hotter than outdoors on the patio slabs. Anyhow, the same display degradation is visible. What this does show is that UV is not the cause.

In conclusion, the results are the same, with or without a case, with or without a screen protector. The difference in duration to show degradation is neglibile, but clearly it takes less than a minute to see real deterioration of black artefacts in the display.

@urszula, we need a response from the team on this, please. No hedging. Please don’t make users wait for weeks/months in silence. Thank you.

Nope. I never use the backlight. Ever.

Screen Sunlight Protection

@jdot @bidinou and anyone else experiencing this issue, you might like to know that I raised a warranty claim with Mudita support this morning.

My request:

*Dear Mudita Support Team,

I am writing regarding a persistent issue with my Mudita Kompakt, which was dispatched on 2nd May 2025 and remains within the 24-month warranty period.

The Issue
When using the Kompakt in direct sunlight, the e-ink display becomes washed out and difficult to read. Black (ink) artefacts on the screen fade leaving the impression that the screen is failing/has failed. It’s difficult to interact with the phone in this state. On a sunny day this can occur within one minute. (There is photographic evidence showing this on the link below.)*

The degradation occurs even on mild days — I have observed it at ambient temperatures as low as 16°C — and eventually resolves when I move the device indoors or into shade. Briefly pressing the power button to cycle the screen temporarily clears the degradation, though it returns upon further sun exposure.

I have tested this systematically. The issue is not related to any sideloaded app, occurs with and without a case, with and without a screen protector, and has been reported by other Mudita Kompakt users independently.*

This issue is outlined with photographic evidence on this topic on the Mudita forum. (This page)

Why This Is A Defect*

*Mudita’s product description states that the E Ink screen “remains clear and readable even in bright sunlight.” My experience is the opposite. The display becomes unreadable in precisely the conditions your marketing describes it as being designed for. I do not believe this reflects intentional behaviour, and I suspect it may indicate a panel tolerance issue — either in my specific unit or more broadly.

I should note that the degradation is fully temporary and reversible, so this is not screen burn-in. It is a response to solar exposure that signifies a manufacturing defect.

Action I Would Like
I would like to request a replacement device under the 24-month warranty. However, I am open to discussing whatever remedy Mudita considers most appropriate, including repair if you believe that would address the root cause.*

Mudita’s reply:

We have reviewed the forum thread you linked and are familiar with this temporary fading behavior. To help you understand what is happening, I want to provide some technical context about how the e-ink panel operates under specific conditions.

E-ink Panels and Thermal Strain
While e-ink is highly readable in sunlight, the physical microcapsules inside the display are sensitive to localized heat. Even on a mild 16°C day, direct solar radiation rapidly heats the dark ink particles under the glass.*

This physical behavior is often compounded by software. We have found that using third-party, sideloaded applications can directly cause this fading issue. Many standard Android apps are not optimized for e-ink and force the display controller to refresh at higher rates or use different voltage waveforms than our system intends. This throttles the e-ink screen to work in a different way, generating significant internal thermal strain on the hardware.

When the internal heat from the overworked display controller combines with the external heat from direct sunlight, it temporarily changes the viscosity of the e-ink fluid. This prevents the black particles from fully rising to the surface, resulting in the washed-out look you are seeing. Pressing the power button sends a full voltage clear to the screen, which resets the particles temporarily.

Next Steps for Warranty Evaluation

You mentioned that you tested this and believe it is not related to sideloaded apps. Because third-party background processes can alter the display driver and cause thermal strain even when you are not actively using those apps, we need to rule out software completely before replacing the hardware.

Please perform a full factory reset on your device and test it in direct sunlight using only the default MuditaOS, with absolutely zero third-party applications installed.

If the screen still washes out within a minute of sunlight exposure on a completely clean, factory-state operating system, then your specific unit likely has a manufacturing tolerance defect in the display panel. If the issue persists under these strict conditions, please reply to this email, and we will immediately initiate the warranty replacement process.

A couple of take-aways:

(1) Mudita are familiar with the issue

(2) Mudita insists that this issue doesn’t affect 1st party apps, only arising on 3rd party apps, which overwork the display driver and cause thermal strain when used in direct sunlight.

I will ponder this reply and see where it leaves me.

Step 1 is to get some data. I would like to test this claim that 1st party apps are not affected. In the first instance, I will test 1st party apps without factory-resetting the phone. (I’ll save that as a last resort.) In this effort, I wonder if I can call on the help of other users. @jdot, unless I’m mistaken you’re also in the UK where the forecast for the next week is typically overcast and cloudy, so the chances of testing soon are slim. @bidinou, are you in sunnier climes? If so, I’d be grateful if you could test 1st party apps and report back. (No need to factory-reset your phone on my account.)

Step 2 – testing after performing a factory reset.

Tune in for more on this saga later.

Merci.

@urszula

Update

Well, the sun broke through in patches today (4th May 2026) in Oxford, UK. These photos were taken around 5:30pm (GMT), so the sun wasn’t as high in the sky, nor was it as bright. There was quite a bit of haze. The environmental conditions were overcast with short sunny spells and 16º C. So, the results shown below would be materially worse on a bright, sunny day.

Even so, below are photos taken showing muditaOS 1st party apps (after only a few minutes of exposure in the sun) and aspects of muditaOS**. Important**: The photos show only Mudita apps and aspects of muditaOS.

I’ve broken them down by app.

Alarm

Pay attention to the fading of numerals in the centre and box outlines.

Chess

The 1st picture (which is the better of the two) showing the Chess app already shows the leftover screen display issues from being in the sun.

Notice the material degradation of other black squares on the board.

Control Centre

See the torch / flash light box and icons. Also note the gear icon and box outline.

Note

In this 1st photo (of two) showing the Note app, signs of solar radiation exposure.after a short while are already present.

Grainy horizontal lines span the text across most of the screen. (I scrolled down for this.)

Maps

(Note: This app is full screen so the top bar showing the time is not visible.)

The deterioration is stark and visible across the whole screen. Dark greys have become light. Boxes featuring controls are ghostly pale. Text crispness has disappeared. Some letters are so blurry as to be unreadable. (3 instances of road B4495 are readable in photo 1. Only two are readable in photo 2.)

Conclusion:

Mudita’s claim that this issue only relates to 3rd party apps is cleary untrue. @urszula, @jdot @bidinou

Yep, I confirm it happens everywhere. Even on the lock screen

Analysis: For the best Kompakt e-ink experience limit screen time to 15 seconds, or less.

In other words: don’t even turn it on.

So has there been ANY of Mudita’s marketing promises that haven’t been broken ?

  • Screen works great in sunlight - not true (see above)
  • Battery lasts up to 6 days - not even close, maybe 2 at best
  • Calls not coming through, especially important ones are often missed (wtf?)
  • Now I could go on about the non-working spam blocker, the offline switch that does NOT block all connections, and so on and on

So does all this justify the price of 440 Euros, when virtually nothing seems to work as it should ?

No it doesn’t meet my expectations @YYZ. Its cost is something like 75% higher than justifiable if it were a mass produced product.

I know that I bought a working concept of a minimalist phone, it works as a second mobile phone. The e-ink screen is satisfactory for the needs of some people, or maybe just me.

I think it’s this Mudita forum discussing the concept of a phone that I like best. I have convinced myself that the Kompakt phone is priced to cover the R&D for a future award winning minimalist e-ink phone that will do even more than my $40 flip phone.
