I am currently not in my home country and that means I can not send texts and receive phone calls on my Mudita Kompakt. I can receive texts and make phone calls…any ideas as to why? Overall I’m a happy customer, but this is an annoying problem, since I travel quite a bit
Who is your carrier, and what are your current APN settings? Can you provide screenshots of them?
Carrier is 3, in Denmark. In Germany where I am right now I change between carriers. Without any luck.
Apn I don’t know, but I will take a picture
@mortenwp I had a similar situation with my POLISH Sim Card when I recently traveled.
In October, when I traveled from Warsaw to Prague & most recently when I traveled to Australia last month.
Are your network setting currently set to AUTOMATIC? Try manually connecting to the network.
Also, in Prague, I found out that my POLISH mobile operator often temporarily allows incoming-only roaming depending on what roaming partner network I’m connected to. The roaming partner network flags the SIM as inactive or “non-revenue-generating”
Some operators require at least one billable action (e.g., send 1 SMS) to keep you connected.
I have an unlimited plan in POLAND, but that doesn’t translate to usage outside of POLAND.
Things to check:
Network → Roaming → Voice Roaming MUST be ON
Network Mode set to 4G/3G/2G Auto
Manually select network instead of automatic
Hi Ursula
I have done all of the mentioned steps over the last 4 days and have contacted my phonecompany in Denmark. Still not able… They couldn’t fix it and said it was the phone that was defunct…but since it works just fine in DK I don’t know…
So, so are able to call (receive & make) and also receive texts? Is that correct?
The only this that you cannot do is send out texts? Am I understanding this correctly?
Incoming Calls OK ![]()
Outgoing Calls OK ![]()
Incoming Texts OK ![]()
Outgoing Texts ![]()
Can’t send texts and can’t receive phonecalls.
I am currently in Amsterdam, and still do not have a working phone😳. So no luck in France, Germany and the Netherlands
So, currently does this what it looks like:
Incoming SMS
Outgoing calls
What does not work:
Incoming calls
Outgoing SMS
If this is accurate, the pattern is asymmetric roaming permission.
Ok. I am not a tech wiz. What does that mean, and what is to do about it?
@mortenwp The good news is that this is not a Kompakt hardware issue. What you’re experiencing is classic operator-side behavior.
Like I mentioned, this looks like a partial roaming authorization issue on the operator side, possibly combined with being locked onto the wrong roaming partner (either in Germany or Netherlands).
Incoming SMS working proves the SIM is active, but blocked voice and outgoing SMS point to carrier-level restrictions, not the phone.
So, this means that roaming service partially blocked by 3 Denmark (most likely)
This exact combo:
- Incoming SMS works
- Voice and outgoing SMS fail
Almost always means that roaming by 3 Denmark is provisioned, but not fully authorized.
Recommended troubleshooting order
Step 1: Manual network selection
This is the same fix I recommended previously.
- Disable automatic selection
- Try each available network individually.
- Wait after each selection
This alone may fix it.
Step 2: Check roaming voice & SMS permissions
In contact 3 DK support with these issues:
- Confirm voice roaming is enabled
- Confirm outgoing SMS roaming is enabled
Ask explicitly, operators often miss this unless prompted.
Step 3: Ask 3 DK to refresh roaming profile
Exact phrasing that works with carriers:
“Please refresh my roaming profile and re-provision voice and SMS roaming. Incoming calls are not reaching my phone while roaming in EU countries.”
You may also try toggling:
- roaming OFF → ON
Step 4: Temporary workaround
If urgent:
- You can use Wi-Fi calling. This saved me for a day or so in Australia before my roaming profile was refreshed.
Thanks for breaking the problem/solution for me. I am back in Denmark now, and everything works just fine.
What I do not understand is that if I put my sim into my old Motorola, there are no problems at all in Europe.
If that’s the case- then this is a very important point, because it’s one of those roaming details that almost no one explains properly and it causes exactly this kind of confusion.
When roaming, some operators change how voice and SMS are routed, and this can require a different network partner or APN configuration. So, when roaming, it’s worth checking or refreshing the APN settings.
Carriers can change or push different APN configurations when you connect to a foreign network, and this does not always happen transparently or with any notification to the user.
On many mainstream smartphones (including older or traditional phones- I don’t know about iphones cuz I don’t have much experience with those), these changes are often handled automatically in the background by the manufacturer’s carrier profiles. Meaning, the carrier will change the settings & not let you know.
On Mudita Kompakt, APN handling is more transparent and minimal by design, which means that if a roaming APN change is not applied cleanly by the carrier, the issue can become visible rather than silently corrected.
This can result in situations where:
- incoming SMS works, but outgoing SMS does not,
- calls behave inconsistently,
- or voice services fail while signal is still present.
For this reason, when roaming and experiencing asymmetric issues like these, it can help to:
- manually review or reset the APN,
- restart the device to allow the SIM to re-provision settings,
- and combine this with manual network selection if needed.
This is typically related to carrier roaming behavior, not a hardware issue, and it explains why the same SIM may appear to work differently across devices.
I will try this, when I leave Denmark again in the beginning of January, and will report back, if the problem is solved
Hi Ursula and the rest of you Mudita people. Happy new year. I’ve now tested the Mudita Kompakt in Germany once more and this time, I didn’t have any problems with usage what so ever…but why you ask…because I changed carrier in Denmark and did the magic tricks suggested.
Awesome
I’m glad it’s working out
