Can't send sms/texts

Visited Sweden today, did additional testing and have news, good and bad.

  • 3 sim: data + voice + calls (VoLTE) works fine in Denmark, voice fails silently in Sweden.
    • I’ve tried turning off, waiting, turning on, resetting APNs, manually connecting to other networks (which fails).
  • Tried swapping in a Danish Lebara sim. It was able to make voice calls, with no VoLTE symbol showing.
  • Tried swapping in my friends Swedish Telia sim. Worked fine for calls, and showed a VoLTE symbol.

I was told from my friend that they had purchased a Nokia dumbphone, specifically with 4G/VoLTE, as that is what authorities had said would work going forward. They then received an SMS from “Hallon”, that this phone would stop working after February 2026, the cutoff point for 3G in Sweden. They switched from Hallon to Telia after calling them and asking why this didn’t work, at which point Telia informed them that 4G/VoLTE phones have to be specifically whitelisted in order to function, and some carriers simply block them all, but that Telia instead of simply blanketly blocking 4G/VoLTE and requiring 5G, looks at featuresets and allows some phones. The friend was even issued a full refund for the Nokia phone, given that it was officially no longer supported in Sweden after February 2026. Telia has specifically announced that they will extend support for these devices for 2 more years.

That explains why my 3 sim doesn’t work in Sweden: 3 SE blocks it.

It explains why Lebara worked, because it uses Telenor/Telia combined network. VoLTE may not be included in the cheap plan.

And it explains why the Swedish Telia sim worked, with VoLTE, because Telia explicitly supports these 4G/VoLTE phones

And in my personal case, it should (but that remains to be seen) mean that my incoming Norlys sim should work fine for voice when roaming in Sweden, because Norlys is partnered with Telia. At least until February 2028.

For that reason, I would hope that Mudita either makes a followup device that has 5G calling (day one purchase for me), and/or contacts Swedish telecoms companies, to see what options might be available.
