CalmCast -- Podcast App -- Beta Now Available

@davidray, on v0.3.2 it’s a manual refresh to see new episodes. Will you be adding any of the below functionality?

  1. New episode notifications for followed podcasts
  2. Episode auto-download for selected podcasts

I would especially like (1). (2) Would be lower down the pecking order for me.

Many thanks.

Because notifications aren’t part of the OOB Mudita experience (and principles) I’m not sure I will add that functionality. I’ll think on it some though.

Auto-download is actually a thing in the app right now but is a bit buggy and I haven’t had a moment to re-address it. It’s actually 3rd on my current to-do short list.

  1. Allow custom RSS feeds
  2. Playback speed
  3. Fix auto-downloads
  4. Add a queue
  5. Allow episode search

Not at the moment. See my comment above to petemeister and you will see my current to-do list in order.

It’s not a dealbreaker. The app is great!

@davidray, I admire your resoluteness in sticking to the principles of calmer living (without interruptions), and I’m persuaded by it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s doesn’t matter if CalmCast remains without notifications for new episodes. (I know on which days new episodes are released anyway.) And it’s good to see that auto-downloads are already on your to-do list.
Thank you.

What snptrs did could be a middle of the road alternative perhaps - not quite notifications, but sorting so that the pocasts with new episodes show at the top of the subscriptions page. Or maybe to make that kind of sorting an option. I will probably continue using in anyway, it’s already a great fit for the phone as is!

I’m prepping a release for tomorrow that will have custom rss feed support and a playback speed setting. I’ve also snuck in the ability to update the sleep timer and playback speed directly from the now playing screen.

I’m actively working on auto-downloads and showing new episode counts on the following page. I’m hoping to have those ready by tomorrow’s release day.

IS the directory update done? I remember you saying you were releasing it so it can be used with google stuff

I’m stoked for this! All of my podcasts are paid subscriptions with custom RSS feeds, so I won’t be using your app at all until that is figured out.

I’m prepping a release for this as well. It will include fixes to the phone number formatting for more countries and a fix to address formatting where the street number was after the street name.

I’m still looking into cost usage for Google Places API. I might sneak it in (it’s an easy update) if I think the cost will play out.

I’m still hoping to launch this update today but I’m running into a few issues affecting load times that I’m not happy with. I’ll update when it’s live.

Final beta round before the new year assuming there are no major bugs.

Important note: This release will install a second version of the app on your phone. This is because I have updated the underlying app name. This is related to me learning app development, sorry. My apps will now be under the pattern: com.calmapps.{{app_name}}

Updates in this release:

  • Ability to follow custom rss feeds
    • there is a new “add” button on the following page
  • Playback speed setting
    • .5, .8, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5
    • via the now playing screen
      • tapping the speed cycles to the next speed
      • holding the speed brings up a menu to select from
  • Sleep timer is now adjustable via the now playing screen (hold to bring up menu)
  • Refresh now happens on app launch to make sure you have the latest episodes
    • It should show a badge with the number of new episodes for each podcast but I will keep testing this to make sure it’s consistent and efficient.
  • Auto-downloads should kick off on refresh
  • Following list is now alphabetical because of the new episode count badges

Many thanks, @davidray. Very exciting. Downloading it already.

I do not personally pay for any custom podcast feeds so my testing of that feature was limited to a couple free ones I found online. Please let me know your experience if notable. Thanks!

Could you give an option for up to 4x speed in the next release?

4x is wild! How do you understand them? I struggle at 2x haha.

But on a serious note, I’ll see if I can give users the option to set an additional custom speed. I could probably do the same for sleep timer if I can make the UX nice. Otherwise, I’m sure I can sneak a 4x in there.

It’s mostly for audiobooks. The highest I can go on podcasts is 3x. Tbh, wouldn’t use 4x much if at all, but since I would use 3x its nice to have a little bit above what I would usually use just in case

In this case, maybe you can add 5000x as well. I’ll never use it, but just in case :stuck_out_tongue:
(Kidding)
