CalmCast -- Podcast App -- Beta Now Available

This reminded me of the scene where Patrick is getting zapped by Neptune because he’s sticking up for Spongebob.

Hey David, new Mudita user here. I downloaded and installed the CalmCast APK a couple days ago. My tests over the last several days have all gone well. My 3 hour podcasts downloaded in a couple seconds on WiFi, and the user interface looks great! I have no issues or bugs to report thus far. I encourage anyone else to give CalmCast a shot.

Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to post positive feedback. Glad it’s working great for you.

I’ll have a new update out before long to better support auto-downloads, autoplay episodes, and a few other nice-to-haves.

You write the following about the new version:

“Important note: This release will install a second version of the app on your phone.”

How should I understand this? Will I then have the app twice? Can I delete one of them? If so, will the data I already have be lost?

Hey, great questions, and my answer is probably not what you want to hear…

Yes, you will have a second copy of the app on the phone. Yes, you can delete the older one. Yes, your current data will be lost so make a note of your current follows and downloads.

Pains of a beta and me being new to app development, unfortunately. Sorry for the frustration.

The update does bring consistency that I can move forward with for all of my CalmApps. It also puts the app in a state that should better allow acceptance into app stores.

@davidray just want to say I’ve been using this as my main podcast listening now and am really enjoying it. It is great have something that integrates so well visually with the kompact.

Hello David, thank you very much for this great app. I had actually strictly decided not to sideload apps, but I really wanted to try CalmCast out and what can I say. I didn’t regret it

The app looks very structured and runs great. It’s fun to use.

Thanks for the effort! All the best

Oli

Glad you didn’t regret it :joy:

Thanks for using it!

I also make a directory app that follows the same principles if you need something to query business information.

Could you try an email app next?

I mentioned some possible future apps on the Directory thread. Email was one of those possibilities. It’s a bit of an undertaking though so we’ll just see how this podcast app wraps up in the new year.

Would absolutely use an email app you make, but just to say, Thunderbird works great on the Kompakt in the meantime

@davidray Hi David, I’ve been using/loving CalmCast. Wanted to share one note with you in the event of utility as you consider/plan the next version. When my MK is connected to my car’s bluetooth, if I push the back on the steering wheel button controlling the audio, it does not scroll back 30s as it does with other podcast apps but rather starts playing from the very beginning. Do you think this is something you are able to fix in future versions?

Haha, thanks for the recommendation and I have to say: this app looks great too.

But it reminds me of “Around Me” for the iPhone. Some people here may remember those times, before Google was telling you every info about nearby shop etc.

It was my first “real” iPhone app back then for my first iPhone (3gs). That’s how it all started :scream:

And that’s not the way I want to go again. I want to try it again the old way. Like in bad horror movies; “Hey, do you know where I can find the nearest gas station, my fuel is all out and my car won’t start anymore.”

100% get ya! If you’re able to be that disconnected then I’m jealous haha! My wife and kids aren’t quite as disconnected as I am so I have to straddle the fence some days.

I said I wasn’t going to release a new update until the new year but I lied.

I believe I have cleaned up most of the refresh/download flows for a near final approach as well as added a few new features. Let me know your thoughts on these and if you have any issues. If this version performs well, I think this will be what I launch in the stores with. Thanks!

  • New Autoplay next episode setting
    • Can be toggled via settings or the now playing screen
    • Autoplays to the next chronological episode (i.e. the next newer episode)
  • Launching the app now fetches latest episodes
  • During the fetch, download any new episodes (if settings allow)
    • Users can now choose to only download over WiFi
  • The following screen now shows badge for new episode counts
    • Viewing the podcast details resets that count
  • Moved the Add RSS Feed button to the search screen (I feel like this is better UX)

The one and only feature I still use antennapod for over this is being able to load my local folders under subscriptions. I have full-length audiobooks, and while this is primarily a podcast player, I have always used antennapod as more of a “long-form” content player. If you can add this as an option, I would use it full time! Lack of ability to listen to local audiobooks was actually want sold me on the Kompakt over the Lightphone 2 and 3 due to lack of antennapod support.
