Blog: What’s Next for Mudita Kompakt?

Hi, does anyone know if Mudita Kompakt has an option to check screen time and if Mudita Kompakt has a pedometer?

No and no.

I wonder if a feature like Step Counter will be added in a later update.

Not heard about it so don’t think it will.

I’ll be the contrarian, fwiw

  1. I bought the Kompakt because it is a minimalist phone…a minimalist phone…a minimalist phone…
  2. I like and appreciate the July upgrades. A small company prioritizes its central goals with the resources it readily has under competing constraints
  3. It makes/receives calls, sends/receives messages and it has a maps function. Yay!
  4. If I need anything else I pack along an iPad mini and tether it to the Kompakt. No need to load the Kompakt down with junk that is only used occasionally
  5. My view of what the Kompakt is trying to achieve is that we don’t need to be connected all the time, be inundated by the world around us or serve the needs of the machine. I check stuff when it’s convenient
  6. If I’d wanted an iPhone (smartphone) I’d have bought an iPhone (which I did last year, a 16 Pro Max), time for it to become just a camera and escape the scourge of AI.

I’m glad to see better support for sideloaded apps. I don’t know if I missed it, but is there a plan to enable notifications for sideloaded apps? That would solve so many problems that have been discussed on these forums by enabling practical workarounds using third party apps.

Also, this is a small thing but I’d really like it if there was an option to switch the clock to a 24-hour format and set a custom snooze time for the alarm.

Settings → Date and Time → Toggle Use 24 hour format

I’m staring at my Date and Time menu right now and that option is not showing up.
EDIT: Nevermind. It’s there but it will not show up as an option if “Always use local time format” is checked. Thanks!

Appreciate all your hard work Mudita team making it possible for me to untether from major phone manufacturers and still have a good quality device. My second week of using only the Kompakt has been wonderful, it’s nice to return to a time when I’m only talking online when I’m actually on a computer!

Here’s my general feedback on what’s coming next:

Maps & Navigation

  • I’ve never used map navigation modes personally, on any phone. I travel all the time and make maps myself for fun so beyond a quick google search for new places the Maps App as is right now is perfect for me. So, I probably won’t use these new features, but I realize I’m an outlier and most people want them.

Sideloading Made Easier

  • Neat! I’ve yet to need to sideload anything (nor do I particularly want to), but more accessibility options are always a plus.

Launcher

  • Fairly straightforward UI changes and bug fixes, not much new functionality though curious about the screen indicator dots.

Keyboard

  • Thank you for the auto-space! Eager to see what the performance and optimization improvments entail. I assume better hit detection? Or is it just faster reponse times? I’m switching from a physical keyboard to the Kompakt, so it has been quite an adjustment in accuracy and feeling for me.

SMS

  • Disappointed in lack of group SMS, but the rest of the UI/UX experience sounds nice. In general, I assume that there is an issue with engineering support at the moment? Considering most of these are UI/UX changes and not functionality.

Music player

  • Widget sounds great, I’m all for handling files more elegantly, but where’s the album/folder sorting support? Seems to me that if you’re already improving folder structures re: SD card drive disconnections you can create a list to sort songs by Artist/Album/Folder on the device. Very, very odd to me.

E-reader

  • Would have preferred the ability to just delete anything from the device but hey that’s fine. FWIW I love the cards (and the origami!), I’ve used similar things before and it was nice to have a digital version on the go to show people too. Looking forward to more E-reader functionality in the future!

Camera

  • I like the photo preview change a lot and the zoom behavior improvement. Panoramic photos are the only thing I really want from the Camera at this point.

Calendar

  • These are all good QoL improvements, thanks!

Chess

  • Solid little improvements! Maybe one day let me save a game as a PGN so I can go analyze it on lichess or something?

Meditation

  • Would like to know what the enhanced UX means! I enjoy the app as is (it’s probably my favorite app) but open to see where you want to take it.

Accessibility

  • Not bad, more of this please! I’m of the opinion that the App functionality should stay minimal, but the ability to customize those minimal functions should become vast. Let me customize my own UI/UX basically.

Overall, I look forward to the next update but I don’t think it’s going to be functionally too different for me, personally.

Hi, can you please enable option “Never” in Display - Screen Timeout? I know that will increase battery usage but users can decide based on their preferences. I am not bothered to charge the phone more often if it allows me to. use it in more efficient way.

And notification icons in the top bar where the signal/wifi icons are would be great. For example when you have music player opened, you can see in the bar if you have some sms or so.

Thank you very much.

Any updates on this? The constant buzzing of the phone every time something brushes the sensor plus pocket dialing EMS has been the only real complaint I have so far.

@andrewh in the update that’s scheduled for next month, the following additions are planned for KOMPAKT (this is also listed in the blog I posted earlier):

  • Adjustable touch & hold delay.

  • Mono audio support & left/right channel balance control.

  • Haptic feedback toggle for hardware buttons and long-press actions.

  • Pop-up duration customization for notifications.

  • Use the Power Button to end calls.

The sensitivity issue is being covered in the bug-fix category (because it’s not really an addition) and it’s also being worked on.

If many users are understood to be interested in a timer, why isn’t it a priority? This is baffling.

Hopefully this might include feedback after taking a screenshot.

Regarding the vibrations on keyboard, I found the solution in the meantime. It is in System - Language and Keyboard - Keyboard Settings - Preferences - Vibration on keypress- the toogle was turned on by default, when I turned off, no vibrations on keyboard anywhere. So it seems the touch and keyboard vibrations is separated by the os. Perhaps this setting (keyboard sound and keyboard vibration) could be moved to the main Sound setting where the Touch Sound and Vibration sound is set, it would be perhaps more straight forward or maybe it’s just me.

But I have different issue with the keyboard now. For the love of me I can’t set QWERTZ even though I am setting it according to the guide. I can even see the layout option as QWERTZ set but when I hit ADD, nothing happen and after while the chosen layout disappear completely. Is it just me or something in the system?

And I would like to ask if in the July update, there will be possible to customize the home screen? I regularly use notes and music and it is kind of pain to always go to apps and then only be able to choose the app. Also it would be great to have the ability to see the opened apps and ability to switch between them and also close them in this view.

Last (for now  ) would it be possible to have the icon of turned off sound in the top bar? Right now I can’t see if the phone sound is off or on, if I don’t go to the setting or click on the volume button. And as someone already said, “do not disturb” would be great with the possibility to set exception in this mode and even reoccurring schedule that you don’t have to manually set it every day.

One more thing, I came across the Replacement parts catalogue and it is amazing what can be replaced. Would it be possible to share approx. costs for the display module? I like the phone without the case better but I am afraid the screen will be broken. If I know the costs of screen replacement I can better decided if I take bigger risk in favor of bigger comfort.

Sorry for the laundry list  and thank you.

Writing to say I greatly appreciate the feature updates we’ll receive in July. Group messages have been the only real “pain” point for me, but thank you to the Mudita team for this great phone and for giving some insight into future updates beyond July. Y’all are doing great work and this product is needed.

Ooo! I like the idea of a habit tracker! That would dovetail very nicely with my bullet journal practice.

Pocket dialing is also my only real complaint.

The below ADB command will increase the timeout to two hours. I too would rather have the screen timeout increased.

adb shell settings put system screen_off_timeout 7200000

one hour = 3600000 ms
