3.5 jack input functions inconsistently – anyone else?

I’ve already mentioned my problem in another thread, but that one is about hands free calling and I have a more general problem – microphone from my wired headphones just doesn’t work altogether. I tested it with calls and with recorder – the only thing I hear is some noice. This is a serious defect in my opinion and I kinda angry at myself that I didn’t test it from the beginning.

I would like to know

  1. if this is an issue anyone else experiencing, or is it just my device problem, and
  2. could this be a software problem (so fixable) or is it hardware (so warranty case).

Couple notes:

  • I did test this headphones’ microphone with other devices and it works,
  • the headphones I have are from Sennheiser

UPD. It does work with another headset for me. Which is a relief. Inconsistency across different microphones is still an inconvenience but I can live with it.

@nilstzh Thank you for reaching out. I just checked all my headphones & everything works fine. Can you hear everything OK through the headphones? Is it just the microphone?

Not sure if this might have anything to do with the problem:

Yes. Audio output works fine.

Also I dug out my old pair of Marshalls and there microphone works! which I am relieved to report. Still microphone works inconsistently across different headsets

@nilstzh I will pass this on. Thank you for checking.

In general smartphone have a TRRS connection, or tip ring ring sleeve connection. See this picture:

Your earbuds might have a TRS connection, meaning you need an adapter. Though I can’t confirm, I suspect your connection does not match the connection of the phone, thus leading to noise.

the jacks from both, Marshall and Sennheiser, are identical. here is a picture – you can try to guess which is which

Marshall ones are on the right
I am looking into using Mode EQs with this phone, but we’ll see how that goes

Well, yes. In terms of connection pins - they are the same  If this is your point.

Broken cable? Have you tried the Sennheiser mic with a different device? Does it only cause issues on the Mudita?

Yes, I did. Which I mentioned in the starting post. It is a headset I am using every single day for work

Apologies I missed that part! I just did my own testing. I used a quality headset and used the recorder app. The mic did work but the quality was…well atrocious. The same result using a usb-c mic. How is the quality of your Marshall headphones’ mic?

It is alright. A bit on a quiet side, but not horrible. I also did a call yesterday during testing and my callee didn’t complain about audio quality so assume it was fine

Our team has chimed in & said that it’s hard to diagnose the issue, but it’s 99% likely that there is some incompatibility with the headset standards or additional features that we don’t support. Everything should be fine with the phone, because everything works with other headsets.
If there ongoing issues- please let us know & give us the model number. This way our team can check for compatibility.

I am having this same issue, I have used 3 different sets of earbuds with mics from 3 different brands with no luck. Sony, JBL, and Skullcandy. Any reason this would be so common of an issue across brands? Is there something I could look for on packaging that could direct me to the right ones? I am in the US if that helps with recs.

@erekwatson I’ve passed this on to our team, so they can check for compatibility with these brands. I’m waiting for their reply.

Model that I have the issue with is Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Over-Ear Wired.

Hi! Do you have any recommendations for brands that actually work? Which ones have you tested yourself? I’ve had the same microphone issues when using the 3.5mm jack. Also, do you have any updates or experiences with Apple’s AirPods? I’ve noticed they sometimes disconnect and then can’t reconnect properly.

@annam Our team has mentioned that they will be testing some popular brands. It does look like this is coming up often with some headphones. However, at this moment, I don’t have any info when it comes to recommendations.
