3.5 jack input functions inconsistently – anyone else?

I’m not familiar with Apple products- but we do have some Bluetooth bugs that we are fixing. So that could be it.

I have yet to find a pair that works, hoping the Mudita team can find some from their testing or determine the underlying cause. I will say that I purchased a USB-C to 3.5mm Jack adapter (dongle) for $4.99, and while somewhat bulkier, it offers a temporary fix until either the bluetooth update in July, or when we can find supported brands. I can confirm that the microphone on all the brands I tried works when using the adapter. I assume that a usb-c based set of earbuds would also work, but haven’t tested.

That is great news! Thank you for the update. I am glad to know that everyone at Mudita is working so hard to notice issues users are having, and I am looking forward to hearing the results of the testing!

Thanks for sharing! I’ll try the adapter solution while patiently and gladly awaiting the update that will sort this out.

Hello and thank you so much for your work,
The phone changed my habits in a positve way.

I have the same issue.
Firmware is 1.4 from December 2025.

I have a tested microphone setup from RODE.
Microphone setup works on all other devices I have, 4.

I tested 3.5 Jack and USB-C connection.
When I list the available devices on the command line,
I basically get one available device.
Line Out works. Line In not.

I hope it is a software issue.
If so a simple setting would be good:
Settings->Microphone->Source(Internal or External)
Another Settings I can see:
Settings->Microphone->NoiseCancellation(None, …)

I am open for guidance for checking the phone hardware.
Feel open to send me command line instructions.
Either via Termux or ADB interface.
Thank you so much.

A Follow-Up:

I connected the mic via USB-C.
I executed instructions from Making sure you're not a bot!
I get:
/dev/bus/usb/001/002
USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter

So at least I can verify that the usb device is active.

My Setup:

A Half-Working-Solution:
:smile:

For the first time I restarted the phone with the microphone or headphone already plugged in.
And magic happend.
Some device driver got cleanly initialized.

For high quality studio like recordings:
I use the App Recording Studio Light from F-Droid.
Recording Settings:
Audio source: Default or Voice communication
Container format: wav
Codec: PCM
Sample rate: 48000
Bit Depth: 32 bit
This results in big files which can later be converted to mp3 using ffmpeg.
Recording works in very good quality.
Using either the 3.5mm Jack Input or the USB-C Adapter.

The default Recording App works too.
In good quality with using the 3.5mm Jack Input.
In somewhat improveable quality using the USB-C Input.

Now when it comes to calling:
Yes it does work too :smile:
Either 3.5mm Jack or USB-C.
But, attenuation, noise dampening, noise filtering does occur.
The voice is not as clear as possible.
Not as clear as in the Recording App.
Not as loud as in the Recording App.
The power usage of the microphone is very small.
Here a setting would be good:
Settings->Microphone
->Equalizer or
->NoiseCancellation(Default, None, …) or
->Amplifier(Default, None, Level)

Also for calling it would be nice: :smile:
To have a hybrid mode.
To use the external microphone.
And use the build in loudspeakers.

Thank you so much.

@kahan It’s great that you got it working. Sometimes, it’s just takes a bit of trial & error.

@urszula can you confirm if the Mudita Kompakt only support play/pause headphone controls via the aux out? I pulled an old Apple Earpods from storage (it’s not mine, sorry it looks gross in the video) and tested with the Kompakt and only the play/pause button worked. I confirmed all the headphone controls worked on my Mac Mini. I also have a new Apple Earpods (USB-C) and all the controls (vol +/- and play/pause) worked with the Kompakt. Here’s a short video showing the controls:

I’ve reached out to our team to get some feedback about this.

@nary Our team got back to me & said that they just checked it on a newly purchased set of EarPods with a 3.5mm jack, and both start/pause and volume +/- work.

So, they are not sure what’s happeing in your case.

Another team member check another brand & it works as well. I am not familiar with Apple products at all, but I heard that Apple Earpods are notorious to not be compatible with other phones, including simple controls like volume up and down. Is it even remotely possible your old yellow Apple Earpods are broken? Have you checked on a different device?

Wow, I appreciate your team going as far as purchasing a new device to test. This is a really old model of the Earpods I have pulled out of the discard bin, but I confirmed all controls worked on my Mac (it was just gross so nobody was using it :nauseated_face:, and only took it out to do this test). I guess it makes sense that Apple would make their devices backwards compatible with old models.
I am very happy to hear all the controls work on a new Earpods! I was planning to get one with the 3.5mm jack because the USBC model keeps slipping out of the USBC port of the phone, and even just 1mm of it coming out, it disconnects. The 3.5mm headphone is more secure on the slot because it ‘clicks’ into place and would not easily come off when the cable is pulled. I was dreading not being able to control the vol+/- when I purchase a new one, so I am glad they work! Again, thanks to you and your team!

@urszula Could it be that I have a defective MK headphone plugin (aux out) port? I purchased a brand new Earpods and again, only the play/pause button registered with the MK. Vol+/- is not working. I verified that the new Earpods worked with my Mac and all the controls work as well.

@nary I passed the video & your follow-up feedback.
Just to eliminate all other issues, is it possible for you to try a pair of NON-APPLE headphones? Just to make sure that it’s not just an incompatibility issue with an apple product because unfortunately, that does happen sometimes.

I have no issues with my headphones from Mudita! Mudita Store | Mudita Earphones with 3.5mm Plug | Sophisticated Audio Experience Maybe not the most audophile headphones but I do find them good-looking and comfortable.

The type c version of the wired apple earpods work fine. I will try to find my 3.5mm ones and test. One thing I find annoying is how the mudita music app plays music when headphones come unplugged… for example if I pause the music it will resume on unplug.

Thanks for this feedback. I will pass this info on to the team.
