- Faster screen/ lower input lag
- Og android Notifications
- Eink controls
- Device encryption (doesnāt seem to have that now since when I set up a device with encryption I have to enter a password when it first boots up before it even gets to the lock screen and I never have to do that for the MK)
- Notifications for voicemail and sideloaded apps (it can even be turned off by default, just give us the option to turn things on)
- Unlock all of the settings and apps in the GUI. It shouldnāt be a challenge to get into things like accessibility settings or find the file explorer.
Most of the other things Iād like to see are already announced as being worked on or Iāve found my own workarounds. Iāll list those here just in case it helps someone else.
- Better keyboard that supports swype/gesture typing: installed Heliboard
- Sync with Google Contacts and Calendar: installed DAVx (sync with google account) and ETAR (calendar app that can pull the data from DAVx, I had installed a separate contacts app but they seem to be showing up in the stock contacts too)
- Notifications: we still need proper notifications but my current workaround is to install Multilauncher (make sure to disable the Mudita launcher through adb after you set it up), install the Notifications app, and set that app at the top of my favorites in Multilauncher (I like the screen on Multilauncher but there are a bunch of other text-based minimal launchers that will work just as well).
- Maps that navigate you point-to-point while respecting your privacy: installed HereWeGo
- Better e-reader app: installed KOReader
- Better camera app: installed Open Camera
- No encrypted messaging: installed Signal (imperfect because most people donāt have it installed and wonāt install it just to send me a message, also notifications from Signal wonāt show up unless you check the Notifications app using the workaround I listed above), also installed Beeper and linked it to my Google account but although it works on a different phone I tried and on my PC, it doesnāt seem to be working well on the MK. I might need more time with it to really figure it out.
- Lack of button customization: installed Keymapper (I used it so my volume keys can turn the screenlight up or down/off, Iām sure plenty of people would use it for mapping the volume keys to control the music player)
- Lack of launcher customization: it would be nice to reorder apps but since I was installing Multilauncher anyway, that served as my workaround for this issue too
- Group texting: I saw that this was in progress so no worries there, I can wait
- Lock screen customization: not a big deal for me but it would be nice and seems like it should be relatively simple to let users upload custom images to display on lock
Something else that would be nice but canāt be done through a simple update: make the offline+ an actual hardware disconnect. Thatās what I thought we were getting but testing with the camera shows that this is not the case.
Can you elaborate what do you mean?
So according to Mudita, the offline+ switch disconnects some items (GSM, mics) at the hardware level but for whatever reason the bluetooth, wifi, and camera are only disconnected at the software level, and GPS isnāt affected at all (granted GPS is one-way by itself but the concern would be an app continuing to gather that data while offline and sending it out once it has network access). This is why if you open the camera app and then hit the offline+ switch, the camera keeps functioning even though offline+ is supposed to disable the camera.
Personally, Iād rather see all of those cut off at the hardware level and Iād like GPS to cut off too, but when youāre talking about hardware thatās not something they can change with an update so I mention it more as food for thought for future products.
Problem is, how can one be sure that something is actually ākilledā by a hardware switch and not just by software as the camera, for instance. Havenāt seen anyone actually test that and post the results.
Having in mind GPS works and there is a workaround the software ākillsā⦠this may all turn into a gimmick, rather than the promised feat.
If someone was savvy enough, they could open up the phone and look at the physical hardware and see if the switch actually kills power but even though Iām adept enough to repair phones, I donāt think Iām at that level.
The camera is more noticeable because you can easily workaround the software kill switch by simply having the camera already in use when you hit the offline+ switch. The camera stays in operation even after you hit the switch. This even works in other apps besides the camera app, such as if your browser is using the camera.
I havenāt seen anyone reproduce that issue with wifi or bluetooth but the existence of this camera exploit suggests that it might be possible. Thatās why I would really have preferred that they were killed at the hardware level.
My favorite ones would be:
- set bell sound volume in meditation app
- have a more beautiful, longer bell sound in meditation app
- show last move of computer chess player in chess notation directly near the chess board (because move is so fast I sometimes miss it and need to loo look it up in history)
In addition of course my absolut number one wish is for the touch in pocket issues to be resolved asap.
Can you set Offline+, go out of camera app and get back in?
+1 on the device encryption idea
Not as far as I can tell. If the app is running, offline+ wonāt disable the camera but once you leave the app and try to go back in, it appears to be turned off.
Seems a quick fix for the devs, slider moved could trigger Camera-using app(s) to force close.
Easy ones:
- Dark screen when phone is locked
- Access to utility features (flashlight, weather, music controls) when phone is locked
- Separate app for photos vs camera
I just thought itād be great to have a recurring (like daily) task list/reminder app on the phone!
Are there any worth sideloading, not much battery draining, not having to use data in the background?
I use Karui for this. Itās simple, convenient, lightweight and FOSS. I am not sure about battery usage since I always force close after usage but I believe it should be ok. It doesnāt support recurring tasks but I just donāt delete these and it works fine for me. You can quickly strike out/un-strike out entries.
- Customizable lock screen.
- Point to point navigation
- Music folder organization.
But please fix the in-call volume problem first.
- Customizable lock screen.
- An option on the alarm to have the screen lights on when the alarm goes off (I never use the brightness but when my phone alarm goes off I canāt see it in the dark)
- A refreshrate option to change how fast the screen refreshes
+1 for cyrillic keyboard. Greek and Bulgarian is official european language too. Bulgarian since 2007 year, greek since 1981 year.
I want to add some that I havenāt seen yet:
- More options in the notes app for layouts. Check-off lists would be nice. And grouping notes into different folders.
- A more fleshed-out calendar. There arenāt a lot of custom options for repetition (repeat every second Friday sort of stuff)
- An option to play chess against an irl opponent (other games too, like sudoku would be nice)
Everything else I have already seen mentioned, or I know is in development.
Quite happy with my Kompakt, some thoughts:
- Music player to stop playing music when disconnected from BT or AUX (I think itās pretty rare that a person wants their phone to continue playing when disconnected from speakers)
- Quitting Apps - I am not sure of this, but I do wish there were a quicker way to āquitā apps instead of them being open. Iām not sure if they drain battery but Iāve been religiously quitting apps just in case.
My TOP3:
- Simple compass app with altitude and current coordinates, may be as part of Mudita maps.
- Big font and graphics for old age vision. (Senior phone option ).
- Radio app
And Keep it Simple, Stupid (KISS) for future updates. Always.
My top 3 would be:
- Native support for key communication apps such as WhatsApp & Signal. (Thereās just no way around them for international communications.)
- Lock screen to show some sort of notification when someone tried to reach me through phone call, sms or messaging app.
- More versatility in the Notes app. At least the ability to add checkboxes to quickly remove items from a list.
If I could add one, Iāll join @geolaz for an additional native app to access Web-Radios from around the world (not FM). Also, the following would definitely be on top of my list if I couldnāt sideload an alternative:
- More responsive keyboard (Currently replaced by Futo keyboard)
- Point to point navigation (App currently replaced by Here We Go)
- Music App Navigation (Currently replaced by Gramophone)
- Calendar to allow for repeating events and custom reminders (Yet to install an alternative).
I trust a lot of our complaints & feedback will be covered via updates in the next ~ 6 months!
