Saw a couple glaring issues so published a few fixes:
Does amazon music have a free API like Tidal?
Based on my research, they have a closed beta for their Amazon Music Web API going right now that would require a partnership with them to get access to. The size of my project probably would not warrant their time for that. I’ll keep an eye on it though for when it goes public.
Well, I’ve some bad news. Tidal actually works very similar to Spotify. Their open api is specific to search, metadata, etc… But does not allow playback. In order to get playback you must be a partner or have a commercial tier. To be a partner you must have a certain size user base (not sure what that is but supposedly pretty large) and apply for partnership but you don’t even get the option to partner until the userbase is large enough.
So, with that said, I think Tidal is off the board.
Dang
Sucks there seemingly isn’t any good free streaming API out there. I’m enjoying the local music aspect to it anyway! Keep up the good work, sorry this didn’t work out
I have Apple Music running fine on my kompakt - is this an issue for others?
I think the issue is not getting Apple Music (or Spotify for that matter) running but rather if it matches the ecosystem and what users want from a “mindful” standpoint.
The main Apple Music app has put algorithms over music, in my opinion, and I aim to do the opposite. I don’t see any reason as to why music can’t be accessible but also put your library in the forefront. I don’t want playlists made for me, seeing what others are listening to, what’s on the charts? I don’t know and I don’t care, etc… I just want my music.
I also want it to look first party on Eink displays.
I also understand that this won’t be for everyone and some do want all those features I mentioned.
Will we also be able to play songs from Apple Music that are not saved in a playlist already? Like when a friend tells me, you should listen to that song/album, will I be able to find it through the search function in the CalmTunes app?
Absolutely, search will search the entire apple music catalog. You will also be able to add apple music tracks to your library and playlists on the fly.
I have a proof of concept working on my device right now using the same YouTube Music workaround that SimpMusic does. I’m not sure yet if I’m willing to release it to the public because it technically violates the YouTube terms and conditions, same as SimpMusic.
But, I will release some screenshots soon showing exactly how streaming will flow into place alongside local songs as if they were one. The only major downside to the Apple Music API right now is that they do not currently allow downloads from the Android SDK. Which means people with data restrictions will have trouble with the app.
Will you put the current app version on mind apps?
I should have something out very soon. I’ll get it in front of the creator of Mind Apps to get his approval for a beta launch.
Beta Release – Including YouTube Music streaming (free, no account)
Welcome to the initial Beta release!
This is the initial release of streaming features:
- For initial launch we’re launching with YouTube through NewPipe
Note: YouTube streaming might not stick around depending on community feedback
This launch is also launching through Mind Apps.
How exciting! ![]()
Curious what the downsides to keeping Youtube Music would be? Seems like a slam dunk so far considering I don’t need to make an account!
Looks and works great so far!
I think its kind of a moral gray area
First of all, Wow, thanks so much for this app. Before I was using spotify, which looked awful on the Kompakt, so this is a huuuuuge upgrade.
Now some problems/ improvement Ideas:
- often downloads failed and were possible for some songs, but not for others
- is it possible to download whole albums? Also is it possible to download songs without playing them?
- I downloaded some songs and then reopened the app the next day and they were gone. The songs were neither in my library, nor downloaded
- Is it possible to tell the app where to store the files (also switching between sd card or internal memory)? where does it store it (I am still searching for those lost songs maybe lying around somewhere in the filesystem of my kompakt :D)?
- I gotta say, even if not needing an account is amazing, I am not a fan of this Youtube Music streaming so far. A lot of information coming up is just false (album name, albums missing songs etc.) and when you search for something its coming up 10 times. If these would be fixed by adding apple music, I would be willing to switch to it, even if it costs me a monthly fee. → having a streaming provider with all the ups (more clean and in order structure) and downs (payment) would be the better option for me. Though I am a bit sad, that the fairer providers like TIDAL wont work with a custom app. If I am making a switch, I would have much preferred to go to a plattform better supporting the artists, instead of going from shitty Spotify to shitty Apple, but if theres no other option (it seems like that with only apple offering a helpful API, right?) I am willing to do that.
very excited about this! I’ve just downloaded the apk, am I right that apple music streaming is not yet possible?
I have a bug currently causing downloads to disappear after a cold start because the ingestion method isn’t pulling from the apps personal download directory. I’m working on a fix for that now.
- Whole album downloads will come in the future
- I’m working on connection reliability to hopefully resolve failed downloads and streams
- I currently require downloads to be stored within the apps personal cache. This is a measure of morality. I will continue to obscure these and potentially secure them with a private app key. If there is major pushback on this, I might reconsider but we’re already in the grey part of YouTube’s terms of service.
- I need to be more clear on where the data is coming from. Currently you’re actually seeing YouTube results filtered for music. This is the most painless way of getting this data without as much fight from YouTube themselves. If we want YouTube Music specifically, that’s a bigger fight that requires larger libraries in the app development. I’m looking into it but my initial tries were a bit of a nightmare.
- Apple Music will definitely come if the app continues to gain traction but as I noted before, Apple Music does not allow downloads on Android.
That’s correct. Apple Music is still on the backlog just not yet finished.
This youtube music is amazing for me! I do feel a little dirty not paying anything though lol. Thank you for this app!
