Teaser for upcoming MuditaOS K 2.0

Look what I found! :blush::+1:

question: I don’t really understand the “join the waitlist”, though - I have a Mudita Kompakt. do I need to sign up for this software version? Isn’t it “just pushed, when it’s ready for release”?

(I mean, it’s not a “Mudita Kompakt, hardware version 2”, right??)

Looks good to me. Very interesting I will add that the Mudita OS is much easier to manage than I expected after comparing it side by side with an Android OS phone.
I think the sync and second phone option for the calendar is a good idea - hopefully the same can eventually be applied to contacts.
Where is the roadmap for 2.0?

Here’s the general Mudita Kompakt roadmap: MuditaOS K Roadmap & Updates

but there’s no specific info on whether we’ll go from MuditaOS K 1.6 directly to MuditaOS K 2.0, or if there are versions in-between,

nor is there a “set date” for when MuditaOS K 2.0 is to be released.

80% odds on the new launcher just being inkOS :slight_smile:

It bugs me that a degoogled phone only supports calendar sync with google, but everything else looks exciting! Hopefully the calendar will become compatible with other sync apps so we can also use degoogled calendars

Even as an anti-alcoholic I would drink 3 bottles of beer if that happens. It would be awesome!

Yes, the Kompakt should support mainly FOSS apps.

The waitlist seems to just mean signing up for their email newsletter.

Yes. I went with the Mudita Kompakt expressly to get away from using Google services. But it sounds like Google calander sync is optional, and even so perhaps that option won’t need Google Services.

I’m more interested if Mudita will consider moving to AOSP13/14 as some apps I tried sideloading will not work with earlier Android.

As much as I would love to see the Kompakt get a newer version of AOSP, it seems extremely unlikely given a) it’s a colossal amount of work and b) for most users the upgrade wouldn’t have any noticeable effect.

Hey everyone! Ula and I are at IFA Berlin until Tuesday, but happy to jump in and (hopefully) clear up a few quick things now. I’m intentionally leaving some as a surprise, and some juicy things for Ula to dive in, once she has some breathing room :sweat_smile:

@pSE

  • No need to sign up for the waitlist (if you already own a Kompakt), unless you opted out of our newsletter! The update will be rolled out as usual, with a heads up here on the forum
  • Yes, we will be jumping straight to 2.0, though it’s fair to expect at least one hotfix along the way before the big release

@smuch

  • The roadmap will be updated mid-next week, pinky promise
  • Contact sync is actively in the works! Also, yes, naturally any Google sync features are strictly opt-in (and off by default)

@solv @YYZ

  • Big fan of inkOS myself, but the new launcher isn’t it. The naming correlation is there, but sometimes naming also often comes down to boring trademark and legal logistics (and a few other things) :stuck_out_tongue:
  • @YYZ I guess your liver lives to fight another day!

@ArmchairSetup

  • I hear you on the broader de-googled calendar support, and I believe there’s a discussion on this, hopefully more next week. Out of many, Google Calendar sync was one of the most requested integration, so it took priority for this update. Fingers crossed for more to come!

Timewise… MuditaOS K 2.0 and InkApps are targeted to roll out this November.

I believe that Google Calendar supports straight ical/caldav so supporting other calendars should work with the exact same code as long as their an option to enter manually the server’s url.

I am assuming regular Cal/Dav capability- Yahoo Calendar or any other standard format should work.

Man, I am liking the disconnected calendar so not sure how I feel about- will likely give in for the family.

Indeed, it’s a hard pass from me for syncing with anything Google

Second phone, yes, thanks. I use an offline calendar, paper —

I do like the artful design options that 2.0 brings.

Well done on version 2.0, I’m really looking forward to it! :star_struck:

However, I’m not really a fan of the new launcher; personally, I love the sleek design and icons of the original version (and Katapult ofcourse). I’m more of a visual person. :slight_smile: … also … “why google sync?”, as others have already mentioned. I’m actually quite allergic to anything to do with Google. So, are other European options available as well to sync in calendar? Such as Tuta, Proton or Infomaniak, which I use myself. That would be great!

Two fast answers:

The new Kalm Launcher is optional. For anyone willing to keep the original look, this will still be possible. You can even keep the original style of the home screen and have all the apps in the text-list style. Quite a lot of customisation is possible. Kalm Launcher also brings some new features. The most obvious one is that, because it is more text-based, it allows the content to be enlarged to quite a big extent. Perfect for people without perfect eyesight :wink:

Syncing with Google is fully optional, and the decision to choose it before anything else was simply based on the popularity of this service. We are not big fans of big tech companies either, but we cannot deny that, in the case of calendars, Google Calendar is totally dominant worldwide, even in the Apple ecosystem. We may look for ways to extend this in the future, but no promises here.

Thanks for your answer !

Will it be possible to have the new launcher + the apps in the old style ? :slight_smile:

Wouldn’t CalDAV be the most standard / generic way of syncing calendars ?
