Switching back to smartphone?

I originally had the LPII and now I use the MK since it’s been out. My main complaint is that I feel I can’t reliably go anywhere with either of these devices for GPS. There aren’t many open sourced GPS maps that work reliably on the MK. I went downtown to watch a movie with friends and I had to call my boyfriend to navigate for me. It’s just a frustrating experience. I went to look at the big me hi break pro and google maps is installed on the app. I am thinking about switching but a part of me also misses having camera and a regular functioning GPS on a smartphone. I use to create video vlogs and I miss doing that. I might switch but also torn because I love e-ink devices and I don’t want to become addicted to smartphones.

I use to have a hi break pro and it’s definitely the closest to a smart phone. I sold mine because it felt more straining to my eyes which could be due to how the screen refreshes. They also have a hibreak S which is smaller but hardware is based off their non pro. The only other eink phone worth looking into is the minimal phone. I also heard Hisense might be making a a10 eink phone but haven’t seen anything official yet.

So the stock mudita maps app is unreliable? I haven’t used maps at all yet.

Mhum. Waze or Here work well enough.

You need an iPhone.

If you install f-droid and Microg I believe that Google Maps or the lighter weight Google Maps Go from the Aurora store works on Mudita OS. I used it that way for months (I was rooted but I think it works even if not rooted).

The Kompakt camera is a problem for me. None of these niche phones take photos that can compare with a mid to high end Apple/Samsung/Google phone. My family and I will be heading over to Vancouver Island tomorrow and I will also be taking my Pixel 8 Pro and my Fuji camera.

I’m going to download the GV maps apk and see how that goes. I need to meditate on getting an iPhone as it would be a serious purchase that I am not sure I am ready for!

you could just buy a satnav for directions
if you want to create video then the Kompakt was never going to work for you.
when you purchased the Kompakt you bought a “minimalist” device not just an eink screen, so many people get this device and then complain it doesnt do what their old smartphone could do, sorry but as someone else has mentioned, you probably should just buy an iphone.

No guilt, ma’am. If you don’t want to give up the MK, getting an iPad mini is a good option as well.

Bro I have had MK and LPII for about 4 years. I am definitely not that person complaining about the limitation function. There are also options to get a camera, but I am more so just figuring out how to increase the reliability of the MK with GPS because as of right now, it is not the best functioning phone.

Waze has worked perfectly for me on MK, but I have not used it in a very large city or somewhere I’m not already semi-familiar with.

I have waze sideloaded and it works really well! I haven’t had any issues other than it being a bit slower to refresh

I’ve been using “here we go” on the MK, it works quite well when the native app is not. Arrived in Athens yesterday from BC and was able to easily navigate to the BnB and then to the wine store with here we go.

Agree that Here WeGo apps works well for me.

I made a separate thread about it, but have you considered getting a smart watch? The screen is too small to be distracting, and you can use the MK as a hotspot and use the watch’s navigation feature.

Tbh …… I loaded my maps into storage, but I find navigation to be the one thing that eink doesn’t do well. Despite maps being something that the Kompakt is advertised as being capable of I find it to be not that clear, and refresh rate to be an issue.

My solution was to leave my iPhone in the glove box, without a sim installed, and hot spot the Kompakt to it when I need satnav.

I never actually made the switch… I am using my Kompakt as a daily phone, but sadly carry around my iPhone with me almost 90% of the time.
At first it was for Viber and e-mail… after that I came to the conclusion, that I have become very impatient with slow tech. I often find myself turning the hotspot on and using my iPhone to chat or get some work content from my e-mail… or using the navigation (as I find the native app on the Kompakt slow and impractical)…

And of course I slip into - let me check just one thing on the Web… or maybe just 5 minutes of social media…

Maybe it’s just not for me… I am using the Kompakt for the last 8 months but so far it just made me carry two devices…

Happy Christmas everyone :christmas_tree:

Update: I purchased the iPhone air and I was mesmerized at first; but I found myself being quickly. anxious over it and not being able to settle with it. I am purchasing the jelly star as a backup phone for google maps and Spotify. This way I am able to have a reliable source in small form factor. I am taking the iPhone air back where it belongs and I am taking this as a learning lesson to not impulse fancy gadgets. I will wait until I am done school to start a YouTube channel as I don’t have an active camera. I am a generation z and I have struggled with internet addiction for a long time. I love the eink phones and digital minimalism. Thank you for listening in this little corner of the internet!

There is GMaps WV (Google Maps WebView Wrapper) as a slightly more private way to use google maps. You can download all of america (13gb) on organic maps, but finding addresses is hard.

There was an app that would would let you search via google and send the coords straight to organic maps, but I can’t remember the name :disappointed:. If you can find an app that does this, there isn’t any issue with organic maps as long as your gps is reliable.

I have switched to a pixel 9a, and I’m just making a commitment to less data creation, which means less apps. Hoping it goes well. I had a really hard time with the mudita.

I find that navigation on an eink device isnt really practical also.
The Kompakt is perfectly capable regarding email.
it is slow compared to an iphone, but it also doesnt have all the tracking and social media / app distractions, getting rid of those was my main reason for getting the MK.
perhaps you should just load a dumb phone launcher (there are lots on the app store) and allow minimal apps on your iphone instead, and also possible exclude safari.
you can make the iphone dumb, using guided access in settings for free as a starting point.
