Support for TFA, OTP, Authenticator apps, and 2FA on the Kompakt?

Hi folks,
Will there be support for TFA, OTP, Authenticator app, and Push style notification 2FA methods for the Kompakt? It seems to me that these would be a minimum requirement for a moderm smartphone as almost all of our accounts (even google) are being secured this way.

I think for the begining you will need to sideload an app for that. luckily, there are opensource apps that allow (at least) OTP

I also have wondered about 2FA. Using Kompakt to tether to a laptop, if a user tries to log into or use a website on the laptop which requires an SMS code for 2FA, will the SMS code be received and accessible on Kompakt while it is still tethered?

can you recommend an app for OTP?

no, Until today I was using a sailfish os device, which means, I don’t know android apps, my plan is to look in f-droid, for otp, and install the one that feel more confortable with

one user here uses Yubico Authenticator (needs a yubikey).
you could also look at Aegis which is open source and looks like it has a relatively minimal design which might work nice on a eink display

For time-based 2fa I use Ente Auth

I have been using Aegis, no complaints so far. It does its job.

In case anyone else has been wondering about this, I have my Kompakt and have found that Yes indeed, Kompakt can be tethered and receive 2FA SMS while still tethered. Thankyou Mudita team for this functionality! :grinning:

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been using it for a few days (installed through F-Droid) and it works perfectly. Coming from the MP02, I’m really glad that the Kompakt has a camera for scanning the QR codes!

I just tried the following:

  1. Removed SIM card from my Kompakt
  2. Disabled WiFi on my Kompakt
  3. Plugged USB-C-to-RJ45-Ethernet-Jack dongle into my Kompakt
  4. Connected Ethernet cable between my dongle and my Internet-connected router
  5. Launched earlier-sideloaded Session on my Kompakt
  6. Sent a message in Session to a friend
  7. Confirmed in my laptop instance of Session that that message appeared there, too

In other words, Ethernet-cable tethering gave my sideloaded app access to the Internet on my Kompakt with WiFi disabled and without a SIM!

I use Ethernet-cable tethering with my SIM-less deGoogled Pixel 6 when I do not want to turn on WiFi (I often keep it off.) but want to download quickly an audiobook or several podcasts.

Confirming that this will work for my Kompakt, too, is great news!

You can turn Kompakt into a VoIP wired landline phone.

Yes. Fortunately, I have two VoIP accounts with various desk phones and a fax machine, so I do not need this!

OMG  Love it  I don’t think I’ve used a fax machine since 2009

Am I correct in thinking that a wired internet connection to a device is required for this?

You need:

  • the Kompakt
  • the dongle between the Kompakt and the Ethernet cable
  • the Ethernet cable between the dongle and the broadband Internet gateway

How the gateway is connected to the Internet is up to you.
