Suggestion: Improve fingerprint recognition to prevent accidental emergency calls

Today, while exercising outdoors, I finished a call with my grandmother and put the phone back in my pocket. Shortly before arriving home, I unexpectedly received a call from the police asking if there was an emergency. It was only then that I realized my phone had accidentally dialed the emergency number (110) due to an unintentional fingerprint activation.

I would like to suggest adding a setting to control fingerprint recognition behavior:

  • An option to enable or disable fingerprint recognition when the screen is off.
  • Alternatively, configure the phone so that the screen only wakes up if a fingerprint is successfully recognized; if recognition fails, the screen should remain off to avoid accidental touches.

I believe this feature would greatly reduce the risk of unintentional calls and improve overall user experience.

@milktea Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Our team is aware of this issue & they are actively working on improving this feature.

Today I had my first pocket dial. Strange thing is the phone did dial a colleague of mine who was in an operation at this time and it distracted him. Better him than 112, but still - I have no idea how it happened. I haven’t been touching the phone for at least 10-15 minutes prior to the dial.

In my opinion you should tune down the sensitivity AND make it like an iPhone - you need to touch it and press it at the same time to trigger any response.

If this is not in the July update I’ll have to stop using the device.

What worked for me was disabling fingerprint. But even when I had it, never had a call. I bet it must have been that the screen was not facing my body.

I’ve had at least 5 pocket calls the last 2 weeks. I’ve left voicemails of 2-11 minutes with my kids, my wife’s work and my son’s college. Some of these I was enjoying a weekend with mates but thankfully it was unintelligable, otherwise I’d have had some explaining to do. Fingerprint removed, I don’t mind using a keycode and will do so forever now most likely but why 6 digits? It should be up to me how many I use, 4 minimum. Really starting to tire of being a beta tester.

Today, I also accidentally almost called emergency services. Luckily, I was listening to music while it happened and immediately went to investigate when the music stopped and the dialling tone started so I could cancel it before anyone picked up. I also noticed some almost pocket dials before that. Though this only started when it got warmer and I switched from jeans to linen pants whose pockets have more space to move around in than jeans. The first months, when I had the phone tucked in my jeans’ pocket which doesn’t have much room for movement, it never happened to me.

So my theory is, that the PIN screen might get triggered more after a series of light fabric touches than it would be if it was in a bag or more inflexible pocket that offered less and if so more strongly weighted contact with the power button. That’s just my theory though since I don’t know what kind of pockets the other people with pocket dials have

Is there any way to edit/remove the “Emergency” button?

Yes. I think I already know the answer…but, can’t hurt to ask.

I recently re-enabled the fingerprint unlock , for just one finger, but by doing so, the fingerprint reader is “always on”. Thus any random finger brings up this screen and thus inadvertent pocket dial.

If that Emergency button could be removed (i know, i know  ) that’s workaround part of the problem for the time being.
