[SOLVED] Editing APN settings from a Verizon SIM

So I’ve been having issues receiving messages to my Mudita Kompakt. I did some digging through these forums and found out I was missing a value for the ‘MMS Port’ in my APN settings. Of course, Verizon does not allow editing of the APN settings.

Many users have suggested simply adding a new APN setting, configuring it to your preferred values, and selecting that as the active APN settings. However, the option to add does not appear when using a Verizon sim. You only have ‘read’ permissions to see what the settings are, but you aren’t allowed to change them.

Today I went into the Verizon store to try and see if they could help. I saw a user on here was able to get their assistance in getting these settings configured. The rep looked at me like I had a third head when I said the phrase “APN Settings”. Of course, these are salespeople and do not generally understand more advanced technical support.

However! I believe I have pieced together a simple workaround.

Step 1: Purchase a “sim kit” at your local convenience store, it should cost about $1. I bought “TracPhone” sim kit. IMPORTANT: This must say “Verizon-compatible” on the box.

Step 2: Remove your existing sim card from your phone.

Step 3: Install the new sim kit. You do not need to activate it.

Step 4: Now, go to the Mobile Network > Access Point Names > Advanced settings. You should now have a + icon allowing you to create new settings!

Step 5: Create the custom settings you need. For me, I needed to copy from scratch my existing vzwinternet settings while adding in the port that I was missing before. Give it any name you like, I chose ‘Verizon 2’.

Step 6: Remove the sim and install sim you were using before.

Step 7: Now, you should be able to choose between the two vzwinternet options. Choose the one you just made.

Step 8: Reboot

Step 9: Should be working!

I need to do some more testing to make sure it’s all correctly operating, but this seems like an easy and affordable way to get around Verizon not allowing you to edit the APN settings. Plus, you won’t waste the Verizon tech’s time in the store.

I also would recommend not hitting the reset button since it will DELETE your custom APN settings.

The forum doesn’t allow me to post images currently but I do have some supporting screenshots documenting the process.

@Joesprite Thank you so much for sharing this. Great workaround! I’m sure other Verizon users will really appreciate it.

Thanks for posting this. I was having issues with my MK on Verizon and gave up on the phone till a fix came along. Do you have the APN setting I need to add? I’d like to give it a try again.

I appreciate your post. My two biggest concerns about fully moving to the Kompakt are issues with text messages and difficulty with Verizon. I have the device fully configured but have been hesitating with the final step of moving the eSim from my iPhone over to a physical sim for the Kompakt…

I hope you (now) have a trouble-free time with the Kompakt.
