Signal Update - Need Assistance

I have signal downloaded as an APK from their website on my Kompakt. I put it on there via Mudita Center and it’s worked no problem. However, now the app is telling me I need to update it within 10 days.

When I click the link on my Kompakt, it takes me to signals website and their APK file is on there. Can I just download the APK update directly from my Kompakt like that? Or will I need to download the update APK file from their website and then put it onto my kompakt in Mudita Center?

More importantly, will I have to get rid of the original signal APK file once I put the signal update APK on my Kompakt? Or will it just update Signal on my Kompakt when I load the signal update APK file via mudita center? Based on other posts I’ve seen here on the forum, it seems like theres a whole process to getting rid of previously installed APKs which I’ve never done before and is why I ask.

If I do need to get rid of the orignal APK for Signal that I downloaded after installing the update file, how would I do that?

Thanks for all the help. I’m not super tech savvy - but trying to learn little by little!

It’s not a convenient way to update your apps that rely on updates through the Mudita Center. I recommend that you download the app Obtainium instead. That app is like an app store that allows you to download directly from the source and keep them updated.

You can watch this video from SideOfBurritos on YouTube: https://youtu.be/JiN37bn0OE8?si=0leJC86R1is9pwTO.

Like the other community member mentioned, this is not the most convenient and efficient way to go about this. Sideloading the Aurora store & then updating through there is much easier.

When you installed signal from their website you have “ghost notifications” from Signal about updates, you may have noticed your phone vibrating from time to time despite not having new messages. Because Kompakt doesn’t have support for browsing notifications you can’t interact with them normally.

Initially I used the NotificationLog app from F-Droid and clicked on the notification there. After installing InkOS I click on these notifications in the “simple tray” (not from “letters”, doesn’t update from there, but “simple tray” works). It takes a while for Signal to download and process the update each time, I have to be patient because I noticed if I open Signal while it is processing it, the update fails.

Since you have an urgent situation with the 10 days before Signal stops supporting your app version, I would try sideloading a newly downloaded APK from the Signal website, I am not an expert either but I think it should just update the app and I wouldn’t worry about removing the old version or anything

If you care about privacy and still want a DeGoogled phone (like Kompakt is), Aurora Store is not recommended, as it sends data to Google. Read more about what Aurora Store sends to Google here: https://github.com/whyorean/AuroraStore/blob/master/POLICY.md

The term “ghost notifications” refers to notifications indicating that updates are available. If you download Signal via Obtainium and receive a “ghost notification” (an invisibly app notification), it simply means the app needs to be updated through Obtainium.

There are many ways to address your concerns, and what I’ve described is one of them. :)I

I had the same with WhatsApp, that reminded me to update the App or it will not be usable anymore. I just downloaded the latest APK file, transferred and installed it via Mudita Center and WhatsApp was updated to latest version. After the installation I deleted the APK file from the phone, as it was not needed anymore.
