Sideloaded Apps dont stay running in Background!

Hi there,

i also received my Kompakt 2 days ago and i like the hardware itself. I already own a Hisense A9 but it is and always was just too big, i hate big phones. But yeah a small e-ink was not available. But now it is with the Mudita Kompakt. So in general i like the HW pretty much. Even though as others stated that the resolution is a bit to low.

BUT…

I only need a few Apps but they are crucial for me, the sideloading was a key argument for backing this phone. I understand everything about that they are not optimized for the e-ink screen. I already had that on the A9. But the one issue that letting me doubt and maybe return my kompakt is the battery optimization. I tried a lot of different ways to let the system know that it should keep 2 Apps (WhatsApp, GarminConnect) running in the Background. But it does not. I still can see on my garmin watch that after like 30-60min of locking my phone the connection to the phone cuts off.

One of the things i tried is this other forum Post with the Name [WhatsApp Notifications - Mudita Products - Mudita Forum. A Community of Minimalist Technology Enthusiasts]
The Battery-Optimization just does not care about the Whitelist. I also tried completely disabling the Doze-Mode and it doesn’t care either.

And yes Whatsapp is in Central Europe the de facto messaging standard, nobody uses sms or anything else. Thats why a “real” dumbphone is not viable here. But the Mudita would walk the fine line between dumb and smart. If it just would not kill the app in the background.

Dear Suppor Team please give a statement to this issue that bugs a lot of people.

@razerlight Hi thank you for sharing your experience. I’m kinda in the same place as you, when it comes to apps- They only ones I sideloaded were WhatsApp, Signal & Brave Browser. However, I am not experiencing any battery drain. Since you just got your Mudita Kompakt 2 days ago, can you share some how much your battery has drained in two days?

I have heard that the apk from the Aurora store and the apk from Signal’s website can be a little different. One reason being that the one from Signal’s website auto-updates instead of requiring the aurora store. I wonder if there is also a difference in battery usage. Where did you all get the apk from?

but they are not complaining about battery drain

@miiiiiiiiiiiii
I understand it as being concerned about Mudita Kompakt’s aggressive battery optimization**, which prevents essential sideloaded apps like WhatsApp and Garmin Connect from running in the background. I have not experienced this. My apps run in the background without any issue. I don’t experience any disconnection OR battery drainage as a result of those apps running in the background.

If you understand it differently, then please share how you see this situation.

Yeah as previous poster mentioned, its not about Battery duration. The Problem is the aggressive closing of the Apps in the Background. Even if i Whitelisted it via ADB command. And No WhatsApp also does not saty running in the backgrond.

I know its about different apps but just to make a point, Spotify and Messenger are not being killed in the background, on monday or tuesday i’ve plugged my phone to my car by audio jack, music was playing from spotify, unplugged, didnt touch spotify, next day plugged it back and music instantly started where it paused without a delay, also for the messenger i just turn on wifi or mobile data once for every few hours and i get all the notifications instantly without having to start the app again.

Although it drains the battery in less than 2 days it is still like 4 time longer than my previous phone

EDIT,
Okay now that i think about it i go into messenger to check those messages once i turn on the connection and it does take a second to load up and show new messages so maybe it is being killed in the background but thats good in my opinion.

Maybe it’s Mediatek DuraSpeed that’s killing your apps. You can try sideloading ActivityManager and accessing DuraSpeed settings from there

You sir are a genius  Thank you so much. I think thats it.

I already had the Activity Manager to open the default Android Battery Optimization and excluded the Apps but as i said it just igonres it. Aswell as adding the Apps to the Doze-Whitelist via ADB. Also ignore. Never heard of Duraspeed until now , but i never had a Mediatek chipset. Qualcomm is different here i guess.

But this i even see the last Restriction and see what apps were Restricted, i Whitelisted my necessary apps and i am curious if it stays now  But looks good.

Ooh interesting, can you share how to access the android battery optimization activity for reference? Which activity name is that, is it under the settings app? And TIL about Doze-Whitelist

edit:Found it, com.android.settings$HighPowerApplicationsActivity

Is Duraspeed worth its existence at all?

Is it possible that Duraspeed is the thing behind people’s alarms not going off on time but late? I’ve seen some threads online suggesting that it could be it and it could be also working despite being told not to interfere with something. Oh boy…

I just noticed that after about an hour, I had no notification, but when opening WhatsApp manually a message from 15 minutes ago came through. So seems like same was happening to me, that the phone was killing it and not allowing it to run in background.

I went to the HighPowerApplicationsActivity, went into Battery Optimization, scrolled down to whatsapp and changed the setting to “Don’t Optimise”. Is this correct and now Whatsapp will be allowed to run in the background permanently?

maybe  Did you change DuraSpeed settings as well?

No, I couldn’t find how to do that, I went into Duraspeed in Activity Manager but there didn’t seem to be any options or settings. It just says “There are no exported activities”

Odd, I thought I was able to open it from there. But another way: start the Settings Suggestions app/activity, type Duraspeed there and then click Open on the app info screen

I might be chiming here in out of place but I think I think Mudita is going to run into a lot of customers who are “tinkerers” and likely also some software developers will want more and more access to customize and own their device.

I think it would make sense for Mudita to create a sub-channel or sub-forum here that specifically houses this category of unsupported tinkering & development regarding third-party apps, unlocking the bootloader, etc. This would also be easier if the source code were open sourced as well.

Thanks so much Miiii. I found those settings for duraspeed and turned on Garmin Connect and Whatsapp. So hopefully that solves it and lets them run in the background.

I wonder how much Duraspeed breaks things and how much it really helps in any way preserving the battery life.

I’m testing Kompakt for almost two weeks now, and in my case Signal is running in the background all the time. I’ve never experienced such problem with not getting messages until I intentionally open the app. I’ve downloaded apk directly from Singal website.
