@urszula: I have had no trouble with AntennaPod or Audible on my Mudita Kompakt. Because of your request, I did some tests.

Via Built-in Speaker

Sound-quality-wise, my SIM-less deGoogled Pixel 6’s speaker beats my Mudita Kompakt’s speaker for listening to AntennaPod podcasts and Audible audiobooks. The Pixel 6’s speaker is simply better, to my ears.

Via Headphones

Convenience-wise, my Kompakt beats my Pixel 6 when listening through headphones. Sound-quality-wise, they sound the same to me through my air-tube headphones. But, convenience-wise, I must use a 3.5mm-audio-jack-to-USB-C-plug dongle to listen to anything on my Pixel 6 with my headphones. Can you tell that I like that Mudita included a 3.5mm audio jack in the Kompakt?!

The Plan: At Home vs. Away

At Home: I prefer to listen to podcasts and audiobooks through a speaker instead of through headphones, and I can do this when I am at home. So, I will continue using AntennaPod and Audible on my Pixel 6 at home.

Away: But, I love the convenience of having those same podcasts and audiobooks with me on my Kompakt when I am away from home and can listen through my headphones – with the same audio fidelity as the Pixel 6 – without disturbing others. No dragging the SIM-less Pixel 6 along with my Kompakt. No need to remember to carry the special dongle for the Pixel 6. And, if I forget to carry the headphones but can listen via speaker without disturbing others, the speaker quality of the Kompakt is quite acceptable, especially for the spoken word!

Bonus

I discovered a bonus while doing this research. Assuming that both devices are Internet-connected (the Kompakt through, say, cellular data, and the SIM-less Pixel 6 through WiFi), Audible keeps up with where one is in listening to an audiobook. This means that Audible will prompt me to “pick up where I left off” in an audiobook when I switch from one device to another. Bonus!

How do you know when the app needs to be updated without an app store?

Kirk, just curious, why use AntennaPod over, say, Pocket Casts? I read the About page of AntennaPod and its aims are laudable. (No pun intended.) But one killer feature of PocketCasts is that you can skip intros and outros.

APKPure lets me know when apps should be updated.

I am unfamiliar with Pocket Casts, but I am happy with AntennaPod.

Oh Awesome! Do you prefer apkpure to aurora store or obtanium? Sorry for all the questions!

I have no experience with Obtanium. I seemed to have access to more APKs in APKpure than in Aurora, so I never went back to Aurora.

Warning: APKpure has MANY advertisements, so you must be careful not to click the wrong [Install] pushbutton. I have lots of experience using APKpure on a deGoogled Pixel 6, where I learned to distinguish advertisements from non-advertisements. Because of all the colorful, animated advertising, APKpure is NOT optimized for E Ink. But, because I know my way around it, I prefer it over F-Droid, which seems to have fewer available APKs.

I found the reason. Because I needed to disable notifications for Beeper, I decided to disable notifications for all sideloaded apps so I don’t have any ‘phantom’ sounds. I now reactivated the ‘curently playing’ notification, and then AntennaPod stays active, as far as I can see.

I’ve found lots of my usual apps are compatible which makes the transition pretty straight forward for me. Feeder, AntennaPod, FastMail, Home Assistant, PlexAmp, etc.

One question I had - some apps have permission pop ups that take up the whole screen in an odd way, but I can’t scroll down to press accept. I’m trying to cast my Kompakt to another screen to have an Android Auto-like experience, and the app I’m using asks for permission to cast, but I can’t scroll down to press accept on the pop up.

Anyone go through this?

What you can do is (after activating developer options). Go to Developer Options, scroll down to “smallest width” which by default is 360, and increase it to max 399. This makes everything smaller and it allows you to see more content, it might allow you to see the button that you’re missing.

After that go back to 360 because the Lock-screen is not optimized for different resolutions and it shows off-centre.

@kirkmahoneyphd The headphone jack is KEY- I love it that Mudita Kompakt has it because it just makes things so much easier.
Where did you get your Audible apk from? Maybe I should try again.

I used APKPure to download and install the Audible apk. If you have never used APKPure, be prepared for LOTS of advertising.

Has anyone worked out a way to get Beeper to do any type of ncotifications. I need whatsapp and slack for work and beeper seems like the best option to keep weight down but no notifications meen im checking the device more than i should be.

So far it seems a custom keyboard like FUTO, Signal/Whatsapp and maybe custom navigation and calendar for some are the portfolio of apps to sideload to overcome the most important lackings. How do you guys see the battery life when those are installed?
My plain MK had full 6 days as I was using tethering for few hours on the last day. Without that, I’d get to 7 or 8 days for sure. I hope sideloading those won’t kill the battery lol.

My sideloaded apps: Calendar, keyboard, music app, navigation/maps, public transport apps, plus language learning apps (Duolingo + pimsleur).
I took the advice in another thread to turn on a developer option which said “don’t run apps in background”, or something like that. With that turned on, I haven’t seen any big difference. I also usually turn off mobile data and wifi when I’m not using it. My calendar is also not synced externally, only locally. With this setup, battery life remains excellent.

If I use duolingo for extended periods of time it does decrease the battery substantially though! But that’s the same thing on any phone.

@coeditor6209 : unfortunately I got stuck in the same place. Such a pity, everything is working like a charm, but not the Tuta App. The Mudita Kompakt, Tuta App (privacy concerned e-mail provider) and my Threema App (privacy concerned Swiss company - works smoothly). Would be great to see Tuta App working on Mudita Kompakt.
