Sideloaded apps: compatibility list

I have started creating a list of apps with information on how well they work when you sideload them on the Mudita Kompakt. Feel free to add more apps to the list after you test them.

Not sure if this is the best format.

Good idea!

Thanks for doing this! Based on your spreadsheet, it looks like Waze works. Can you confirm that it is usable for navigation? I’m primarily looking for something that would route based on traffic. It doesn’t have to be beautiful

Any fellow Poles tried mObywatel by chance? I wonder should I bother myself with sideloading it or rather get a physical KDR.

@buiosu I confirm that mObywatel works  but I’m not sure if all places will accept ID from e-ink screen

where did you get the genuine APK from?

Many apps offer their apk on their website.
There is also stuff like aurora store which is being widely used in devices without google services… what i did was installing it, adding spotify and messenger and deleting it from my kompakt, i hope its a safe option.

Yeah I think Aurora or some apk ripper is the only way for some apps, unfortunately. Or emailing the app vendors.

mObywatel is a Polish Gov app, it’s distributed only via AppStore/GoogleStore. That’s why I’m asking.
It’s not safe to have such an app downloaded from 3rd party site(!)

Waze was added by somebody else, so I’m afraid I don’t have the answer to this

Im Polish too but i never needed this app and i don’t even know what is it for, all i know it exist
You are right that if you have some very sensitive data there then installing it from third party source might not be a good idea.

I think some apk ripper or Aurora should be fine. Or we could try putting pressure on the government (lmao) to expose .apk themselves.
I don’t use it often, there is few potentially interesting bits but for me it’s restricting PESEL (which can be done from a PC browser, too), road penalty/fines, and KDR. To be honest, I can finally get the plastic KDR after many years since it was crafted for me…
I have the phone for just under 24 hours and I really hesitate do I want to sideload anything on it… Signal and Telegram is on my PC now, Whatsapp too, in case of any advanced emergency or PC Whatsapp losing binding I can grab the smartphone from my car, power it on, make use of it, power it off.

After testing various apps that I have on my deGoogled Pixel 6 by sideloading them onto my new Kompakt, here is a screenshot of how my Kompakt “Apps” screen now looks. (I laughed when I saw the colorful icons, given that E Ink cannot render them in that way!)

Built-in apps that I am hiding

  • Calendar (using Etar instead)
  • Chess (don’t play)
  • E-reader (no need for it now)
  • Maps (using HERE WeGo instead)
  • Music (no need for it now)

Sideloaded apps that I am hiding

  • APKPure (only needed when sideloading apps)
  • DAVx5 (synchronizes hourly my Nextcloud-hosted contacts & calendar)
  • F-Droid (only needed when I cannot find an app on APKPure)
  • Kroger (grocery app needed only in store for deep-discount digital coupons)
  • LTE Discovery (only for when curious about LTE band currently in use)
  • RHVoice (already configured to supply a text-to-speech voice to HERE WeGo)

I have my Mudita since yesterday. Great device, shows promise but there is still some work at the software side. It’s good we can sideload apps to counter the shortcomings, for now.

How is Antennapod working for you? I started listening to a podcast yesterday, with the screen off, but after a minute or 10 the podcast stopped, presumably because the phone killed the app. I suppose they’ll improve on the Music app or maybe add a podcast app (AntennaPod is open-source, they can start from there).

@kirkmahoneyphd Let me know how Audible functions for you. I wasn’t satisfied with my experience.

I’m using Antennapod for a 2 days now, it never stopped playing even with screen off.

Thanks. Maybe it was a one time thing.

How is that possible? The color icons on e-ink screen.
