Problem with hidden apps mudita OS, InkOS,Whatsapp

Dear community, I have had the Kompakt for a week and am basically very enthusiastic about it.

However, I am beginning to worry about the safety of the device.

After, of course, first using the device with Mudita OS, I wanted to try sideloading.

So, I downloaded the Aurora APK from the F-Droid store and installed it on the Kompakt via the Mudita Center. Then I installed WhatsApp from the Aurora store.

And then InkOS from the official GitHub page. What was strange then is that I had two apps with Calendar. I clicked on each, and one is the Mudita Calendar, the other opens as a “web version” of Gmail. In addition, suddenly various other apps that had previously been hidden, such as FM radio, etc.

Now I thought I had received a wrong version of an app, so I reset everything to factory settings.

After the phone was completely fresh again, I could do everything without “developer options and USB debugging” Sideload everything again via MuditaCenter.

And again, these previously hidden apps appear… Calendar, Radio, WebView Browser without me having installed any of them.

Has anyone had similar experiences? And why do I not have to unlock the phone again with ‘Developer Options,’ why not enable USB debugging?

What is going wrong here?

Showing some of the hidden apps is actually a “bonus” of inkOS and Katapult. If you don’t need them, you can hide them. And USB debugging stays active once you activated it, at least with the latest version of Mudita OS. At least that is my experience. So doing a factory reset was not necessary, everything seems to be fine. The second calendar is the Android one. I usually hide it, along with WebView and a few other things.

Thank you for the quick response. After the reset and installing the sideloaded apps without ‘Developer Options,’ I later enabled the option, and USB debugging was still turned off. Nevertheless, I was able to install beforehand.

And several permissions had already been granted to the Android calendar even though it had not been seen before.

Is all of this really secure? What else shows up there?

This should be answered by the Mudita team, if they are able to :stuck_out_tongue:

If you’re trying to get a legitimate answer about security concerns regarding the Kompakt, good luck. You’ll most likely receive an AI-generated response from the team and told that the device is actually secure despite being a no-longer supported OS, Android 12. “Trust us, bro” is the response I see most from Mudita concerning security.

These apps don’t come from inkOS, they were already on your Kompakt, simply Mudita Launcher doesn’t show them to you.

  • Android Calendar is the calendar provider, basically where events get stored. Because you can have multiple-calendar apps and they all normally store the events on this utility.
  • I’m not sure how it’s opening gmail for you, it should simply show a simply calendar. Also you shouldn’t disable this with ADB, just hide it.

For the other apps there are:

  • Web view browser, fm radio.

I choose not to hide them because some users want to use them. You can hide them in inkOS by longpress in the applist.
