Poll: Kompakt as solo daily driver, or as primary/secondary EDC?

I was curious as I’m finding I still have to bring an iPhone along as a backup with the Kompakt in the week I’ve had it, and in some cases I have absolutely no choice (bank/gym apps).

I was wondering if most people are:

  1. Solo Kompakt - only Kompakt every day, no other phone
  2. Kompakt as primary - carrying a second smartphone as a backup
  3. Kompakt as secondary - using other phone more and Kompakt on occasion

I don’t necessarily love the idea of carrying two devices everywhere - but with some planning it is possible to bring only the Kompakt on certain days. I can already tell without a doubt that for big trips/travel, it won’t cut it as a solo device (eg - heavy navigation, translation, navigating bookings/flights etc). So for me, it’s really looking like #2 - with a few occasions where I can really just leave the smartphone behind.

#1, but I use a SIM-less deGoogled Pixel 6 in at least four ways:

  • For downloading (via Ethernet dongle) and playing Audible books
  • For downloading (via Ethernet dongle) to and playing podcasts on AntennaPod
  • For use of my grocery-store-chain’s app (for “digital” deals) when WiFi-connected to my grocery store
  • When travelling, as a miniature WiFi-based computer for accessing the Web and email

I’m thinking #2, but treating my phone like a tablet, not a backup phone…
We’ll see when I get my Kompakt.

I’ll have to use my work i-phone for two factor authentication, but I will be using my Mudita for anything other than that.

This is why I got the Kompakt. First time I can side load DUO authenticator for work to a minimal/dumb phone.

#2 with a sim-less iPhone as the secondary. I need to for work verification, authentication, and occasional research. Plus it’ll allow me to listen to podcasts and audiobooks with my AirPods

Just the Kompakt, I don’t own a computer. I have had an old iphone for the past year because I began having trouble with Nokia feature phones that I had used for the past 8 years or so, I will give the iphone to a friend when I get the Kompakt.

I had a Boox tablet at one point, and will consider getting another eventually for apps/internet for when I travel.

Addendum: #1, but will move my SIM from my Kompakt to my other minimalist cellphone – a Sunbeam Wireless F1 Orchid – when I want to create group text messages and as long as Mudita has not enabled this everyday-usage feature for American cellphone users

Why not sideload audible - or use libation to download your books without drm?
Couldn’t a podcast app be sideloaded?

There are currently bugs that affect both Bluetooth devices and side loaded audio apps that try to run in the background. For me it’s easier to offload that to the other device I will be carrying anyway

wait really?! I thought the mudita team had tested spotify. does this mean that sideloaded audio apps won’t work with bluetooth?

My plan is solo alternating the LP3 and the Kompakt depending on how smart a phone I need ironically I think the Kompakt is the smarter on that duo.

@han AirPods specifically don’t work well with the kompakt and there are some issues with podcast and audio book apps not staying open in the background

Wow that is super disappointing to hear.
I know that the sideloaded apps are technically unsupported.
It’s unacceptable for Mudita to not even debug the issues with Airpods. That needs to be fixed ASAP.

I am doing #2 but I don’t really use the backup smartphone, I was mainly testing in the last two weeks if I need it. But I guess I can switch to #1

I am going with #2 at the moment but slowly working towards only using the Kompakt.

When going to social events, walks or on trips that dont require paying with Swish (Swedish payment and money-transfer app) or buying tickets for the bus or train, I leave the smartphone at home.

I am #1 for about 2-3 weeks now, and It’ll probably stay like that for some time. I have all I need with the compact. Especially thanks to the ability to side load a podcast app, my gym app, and the classic signal/whatsapp combo. All I really need for now.

But I have to say I still use my iphone maybe once a month to pay my bills. That said, I am looking into doing that with Mudita as well in the future. It’s just a question of going to my bank since they have to activate their app. I am just lazy and didn’t do it yet lol.

  1. Kompakt as primary - carrying a second smartphone as a backup (but it is switched off :sunglasses:).

Working on getting to number 1, and in fact go on shorter trips with just the Kompakt.

Interesting combo (I had thought of doing the same, but more to test both than keep them both long-term). Do you see a use case for keeping both LP3 & MK long-term?
