One week with the mudita kompakt as a software developer

You should disable it last, just in case.

@madebtpixel02 that’s a tour de force – a brilliantly comprehensive and impressive write-up. Thanks for sharing. You clearly know the Android OS. As a newbie (coming from iOS), I’m fumbling around, so your post is very helpful. But one thing I find is that the I’d like the MK to perform quicker (without closing background processes). I want the ability to continue listening to a podcast/music and reply to a message. Are there any ways you can suggest to make it run faster? I disabled animations, but as you say, some apps will obey, others won’t.

Many thanks.

Hello @petemeister, glad you found the post helpful!

Regarding background processes, the device has not closed any media playback in the background from what I’ve tested. Also messaging from both SMS and WhatsApp still to receive notifications in the background with no issues. Will let you know If I get more trouble down the line.

Regarding performance, the device itself is snappy, you can see that when you interact with the phone through scrcpy, the device is fast to load apps and data. The bottleneck here is the E-Ink screen. I hope in a future update they optimize the screen for faster refresh rates, or at least give users the ability to change between various refresh modes.

Does this also account for the slow scrolling? Also when the keyboard slides up/down?

Yeah I’m also requesting some e-ink management tool, for it would be for slower refresh rate as the “black” e-ink refresh doesn’t bother me, I would just like Smooth text like we get on the eReader app.

But I guess having 3 speed modes would be ideal.

Edit: Paired a bluetooth mouse to the Kompakt and you can actually click on the Done button in Niagara. It worked for a while, but it did reset after crashing the app

Also the rendering of some images looks off with some random particle effects visible (you can check the images below). I assume this could be fixed through software, since it only happens with certain color rendering. Kindles have a much better panel I am afraid.

I seriously suspect that there’s possibility for improvement to the aliasing of fonts with the way they’re drawing the e-ink on the screen. I’ve seen the same panel and DPI density on other e-ink devices and the fonts are a lot crisper. My guess is that this could be resolved. Maybe even faster if they open sourced the rendering stack and let the community fix it :).

Very nice review, not having 5g I don’t think is a big deal, 4G is going to be around another decade minimum and by then no one is going to still be using the Kompakt,

Amazing post. Thank you @madebypixel02. I just switched to Nigara as well. Loving the ability of viewing the notifications right on the home screen.

5G is not just about speed. It has, if ISPs implemented it right, additional security protections against IMSI catchers. That’s why it’s saddening to see just a 4G modem on the MK.

It’s a missed opportunity on providing that additional security, which is one of the selling points of the device

Great detailed review. It’s interesting that some people are disappointed that there is no front facing camera but for me I absolutely hate front facing cameras on any device - it makes me paranoid. The fact the Kompakt didn’t have a front facing camera was a big selling point for me.

How do you find battery impact coming from sideloading and the above settings, how are the apps performing, say messaging apps? Can we anyhow set fixed intervals at which those apps can try to sync up with their servers?
What about battery use and inversed screen colors? I guess no impact.
Have you seen any problem with alarms going off on time or other issues that might perhaps be induced by Mediatek’s DuraSpeed?

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review and for including photos! Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and we truly appreciate the thoughtful insights you shared after your first week with Mudita Kompakt.
After reading all of the responses, I can see that others appreciate all the work you’ve put into this write-up. I gotta say, I’m truly impressed! :raised_hands: :trophy:

From my experience, there have been no major issues with apps trying to sync in the background. I did face one issue where the music player was killed in the background, so I disabled the battery saving tweaks for now.

Regarding battery life, I can comfortably get to 4-5 days of battery life with moderate use of GPS, music, podcasts, messaging and calls. I don’t think using inverted colors will have much impact on battery life to be honest.

Thank you so much for this review!
I usually use Olauncher and haven’t head of Niagara Launcher before but now that I know it, I think it’ll be my new default go-to because of the notifications. Now I only need to figure out a way on how to purchase the Pro version without the PlayStore and no email client on my phone.

FYI - Developter option Don’t keep active causes some problems.
For those using Developer Options: I just want to mention that the SMS stock app does not work as it should if it is enabled. E.g. it is not possible to send a new SMS to a contact selected from the contact list. When you press the button to create a new message and then select a contact, nothing happens. Another problem I have noticed is that if you write a long SMS and then lock the screen, the message is partially truncated; what is visible is only a few words followed by three dots.
So, Developer Options: Don’t keep active can cause unwanted functional issues.

@denguefeber agreed, it is also causing some issues here as well, for instance in my bank I cannot verify an OTP via SMS because when I switch apps the bank app immediately ends the verification process, so by the time I reopen the app after copying the code the bank no longer accepts the code. Disabling that option fixes that for me, so it’s probably best to keep it that way, and explore other ways to improve battery life.

I had a similar issue authenticating audible as i needed to switch to sms for a code.

I’ve been looking for a solution to get DND (Do Not Disturb) working on the Kompakt.

It seems like Mudita started working on the intent android.settings.ZEN_MODE_SETTINGS, but never fully implemented it.

I would like to set DND so that I can keep my phone silenced while allowing calls to come through.

Of course I can force enable it using KeyMapper but DND options are just not working yet.

Has anyone worked out a solution yet? Thanks!

Does anyone know if there is any FOSS alternative for Niagara launcher? Or let’s say any text based launcher with notification badges? (No need for full notifications.)
