I am hoping to be able to connect the Mudita Kompakt to a keyboard and turn it sideways to use as a no-distractions writing setup. Will the notes app rotate with the phone? Is there a limit to the length of notes? In what formats (.doc, .txt etc) can the notes be exported in?
Check out this thread, which may address some of your ideas:
I have looked over that and it is similar! I am really hoping for some details on the actual limits of the notes app however and how they will be able to be exported. I would really rather not have to sideload another app just to have a basic text editor.
Absolutely need to be able to write long form notes and export them
Most obvious example is shopping lists!
@gregwhates & @andrewh
Right now, the Notes app doesn’t support horizontal (landscape) mode—that was actually intentional, since we don’t have a horizontal keyboard layout developed yet.
As for note length, there’s no strict limit in place. From what we’ve seen, you can write up to around 140 pages’ worth of text, which is roughly 60,000 words—so, plenty of space for most people!
The notes aren’t saved in any particular file format—they’re stored directly in the Android app’s database.
And currently, there’s no built-in export option. The only way to back up your notes is through the encrypted backup in Mudita Center.
One of the recent reviews I saw showed the note stopping after only a few lines?
@gregwhates
We have two sections in the notes note
- header
- body
The header does have a limit.
Thanks for the clarification!
When you say encrypted backup does that mean there is no way to get to the simple text files? No way to then move the note to something usable on a PC? Is there at least a way to view them in the Mudita center on PC and copy/paste into another program?
@andrewh I will ask & get back with some info.
they should at least be an option to export them to a usable standard format for Win/Linux/Mac. That would be really appreciated.
I saw this as well. I have to think that was because it was a demo phone?
@andrewh Because of privacy focus and the minimalist design of the Kompakt phone, there isn’t a built-in feature to directly move the notes to a format easily usable on a PC. Also Mudita Center currently has no feature to view and further export notes.
The intention behind the phone’s design is to encourage less phone usage, and features that facilitate data transfer and sharing are not prioritised.
Mudita Kompakt allows to use third-party applications which is a possible solution for your needs of exporting them or saving in file format.
I definitely understand the desire to be minimalist and privacy focused, that is why we preordered two phones! However, I have understood the Mudita Kompakt’s goal as one to allow the user to have the utility features they need while avoiding the distractions and addictions that come with normal smartphones. A phone for intentional usage. I do not understand how having the ability to access the notes written on the phone and export them would stray from that design philosophy? Why have a notes app at all if Mudita believes that using it strays from that philosophy and increases phone usage? I would argue a chess app strays much more from that philosophy than the ability to export notes! Additionally, while privacy is a great thing it should not include limiting the user from accessing their own data. If the notes are being backed up onto the computer, albeit encrypted, the user must have access to their own data and be able to view them in the Mudita desktop application.
I can understand these features not being available at launch but I do not think the reasons you mention make sense as to why they will never be added.
Not all hope is lost!
I actually posted an update on this earlier today where I mention that while export isn’t currently supported, the team is exploring the subject of adding a privacy-safe, lightweight way for users to move their notes.
There will be a survey sent alongside your shipment confirmation, and I’d highly appreciate anyone in favor - mentioning this there too!
On a personal level, I’d love full access at least in Mudita Center, and will remain actively lobbying for it
