Native Apps are incredibly basic and lacks important functionality

Hi Mudita,
1 week with the device, and I’ve quite enjoyed the ride. What has been most fustrating to realise is the lack of basic functionality in your native Apps. These are the apps that your users are stuck with, if they decide not to (or dont have the knowledge to) sideload alternative apps. In my case, I have (unfortunately) sideloaded apps to replace your native apps because of missing important basic functionality. Here are my future requests to improve your native Apps to a point where I could actually be using them for what they are designed to:

  1. Music
To be honest, you could have saved yourself the effort and just dropped this one. No sorting of Albums or Artists, just an alphabetic list of chaos. Could you please add this type of sorting, so that we can actually locate the music we put on our device? Thank you!

  2. Calendar
I understand that you might not want to add any syncing here to avoid security issues, but could you at least add the possibility to add reoccuring events? I want to make my weekly plan with reminders, and many of them are reoccuring events every week. Also in my country, we often talk about what week something is happening. Could you please add week numbers? That would be very helpful in order for me to get any use out of the calendar at all.

  3. E-reader
This one is also way too basic. No way to show chapters / titles. No way to delete those meditation cards. No way to adjust read mode or anything. I really hope you didn’t put a lot of time and effort into this, because that would be such a waste of time. Please consider forking another open source project, or add some more useful functionality to the reader, maybe even with support for PDF.

  4. Alarm
I earlier reported here on the forums about an issue that the alarm didnt ring consistently. I thought it was my fault because of another alarm clock showing incorrect time, but after double checking, it actually is a problem: The alarm does not ring at the exact time, but often 6 or 9 minutes past the set time. This is very annoying, and I will try to capture it on video in the coming days. Also: The lack of a simple timer is sorely missed. Cooking meals, doing some entertainment or games, having a timer is essential. Could you please add it to the Alarm, or rename it to “Clock” and include some more utilities? Thank you!

  5. Chess
Already asked about this here in the forums. Would be very nice to be able to play a 2player game offline with a friend, not just vs computer.

So, to anyone wondering what Apps I have replaced the native ones with for now, here’s my recommendations:

  • Music → Auxio. A simple and E-ink friendly player with the ability to sort by different categories. That’s all I need.

  • Calendar → One Calendar. Ad free calendar that supports all accounts for syncing. Has all the settings your want to add to your calendar.

  • E-reader → Lithium. Compared to KoReader, Lithium is much easier to setup and navigate. Simple, free and just enough settings to get started reading your favourite books. It’s really perfect when setting horizontal mode and volume buttons as page turn. Highly recommended!

As for the other Apps, I haven’t looked into replacing them so far. I’ll keep you guys updated once I find good alternatives, or pehaps you have found anything? Please share in the comments!

Sidenote: A user on reddit tipped me about the ability to replace Icons on sideloaded apps, in order to replicate the native app icons. I tried a couple of softwares on PC to change app icons, but to no avail. If anyone are able to do this, please do share your success, and I’d be very happy to get som help adding custom icons to the sideloaded apps listed above, so they blend perfectly into the Mudita OS

Thanks for reading, and hopefully Mudita will keep up to speed with improving this device and add the missing functionality that one would expect this type of niche phone to be good at.

I have to agree with you on all points. It’s a real shame that the native apps are unusable upon release. You really have to include the maps app in that, too, which is pretty unnecessary without navigation.

Without wanting to sound unnecessarily rude, I have to say that it’s almost a little embarrassing to release something like this so-called music player. My plan was actually not to sideload tons of apps, but to have the pure () Mudita experience. So, for now, there’s nothing else to do.

Thank you so much for this!
Your suggestions for sideloaded alternatives are actually a godsend, particularly the One Calendar app. I installed it now, and it syncs to my outlook account! It’s incredible!
What I struggle with though, is that I can’t seem to set any reminders locally on my phone for events which are imported from outlook. All my outlook events automatically come with a set reminder (by default 15 min), and I cannot seem to work around that… Any suggestion?

for calendars i miss browsing by year, not only month

and also when creating new event you cant choose year unless its all day event, and also theres not an option to have multiple reminders and also the only one 5 minute reminder is too basic and cant be edited

What did you use to download one calendar?

I believe it was through Aurora Store.

Here’s a quick tutorial on how to sideload:

Yeah, I could definitely have mentioned Maps aswell. Having navigation is really something they should work on too. Have you looked into sideloading any alternatives here?

OrganicMaps on F-Droid or HereWeGo maps on AuroraStore

I agree, I already tried to open a debate in this thread.

I would still welcome the ability to change the appearance of the lock screen. Ideally without the logo. It really gets attention.

Do you notice any changes in your phone’s behavior after installing apps? Battery life etc?

@gregwhates 100% totally valid. Our team is aware of this and they are taking everyone’s suggestions for the calendar into consideration.

I noticed the same issue with the alarm the other day. Instead of beeping at 6.40am it did at like 6.47am.
That’s a real pain as you expect that to be precise otherwise it can mess up pretty badly your day, hope it gets fixed in the next patch !
