Mudita Kompakt refuses to do a factory reset

I tried to do a factory reset on my Mudita, but when it’s done I can open the phone with my fingerprint and passcode and all my apps are still there with all my info, wifi is working. So it didn’t do the reset… It just won’t go back to a fresh start. Deleting any apps one by one is also not possible, it refuses to delete anything when I try to delete sideloaded apps (with Aurora Store). And Whatsapp keeps crashing every day. Sometimes it’ll work for a few hours, then it crashes. I uploaded an epub last week, it was there for a few days, then it dissapeared into thin air. How? It wasn’t me. Something isn’t right. Someone else having these same issues?
I really like the phone and the intentions of the brand, but the phone is just not working for me at this point. I hope the July update will fix a lot of problems, but if not I have to send it back. But I don’t want to…

@rwten Thanks for reaching out. Let me ask my team about this. This is a very interesting case.

Thanks. I’ve put it away in it’s box for now and went back to my old ‘normal’ smartphone. I really hope there’s a solution.

@rwten Our team has suggested that you do a HARD factory reset.

  • Power off the phone
  • Hold Power and + Volume Up buttons together until you see the “Select Boot Mode” screen

If this doesn’t work, our customer service can offer other options.

  • Use the Volume Up button to scroll to “Recovery Mode”, then click the Volume Down button to press “OK”
  • Once the screen shows a broken robot icon, press and hold the Power button, then click the Volume Up button once to open the Recovery menu
  • Use the Volume Up/Down buttons to scroll to “Wipe data/factory reset” and click the Power button to confirm
  • Wait for the factory reset to complete

Hi Urszula, I’m back from holiday and thought I’ll give it a try… I have a few sideloaded apps that I tried to delete via webadb. Put in the command lines ‘pm uninstall’ and the name of the app. Looked fine, webadb confirmed the removal and I saw them disappear from the screen of the Mudita. I disconnected the phone properly from my laptop, restarted it and… all the deleted apps are still there! Tried to to a factory reset, that failed. Tried to delete apps via Aurora or F-Droid, still nothing deleted. Than I tried the hard reset. That also gave an error: ‘mke2fs failed with status 1’. See the 3rd photo.
As I said, I was really really positive on this phone before buying it, and really want it to work, but now? I use my old deGoogled Google Pixel 4a with GrapheneOS for years now with no hassle whatsoever, why can’t my Mudita just work fine? A solution, anyone?

This sound like a partition error and not related to sideloaded apps, because they have no system access to cause something like this.

Are you in 1.2.0 and was this issue happening in 1.1.1 version of Mudita OS K?

When you go to view recovery logs what does it say? That should help you find the issue

Hi @gezimos
Thank you for the fast response
The phone is on 1.1.1
There are definitely some fail messages in the log. Is there something specific you want me to look up?

From what I can understand your Recovery is corrupted it’s lacking some files, and on the 3rd image it says “cache partition not found”.

So imo this might have been an issue when it was originally flashed before it was sent to you, or a failed update.

Are you able to update to 1.2.0 using the updater app in Kompakt? That normally should also update the recovery and avoid these issues, but seeing that the cache partition is missing the problem is deeper.

And you should contact the support and give them the logs you provided and they will be able to pinpoint the issue and offer you a solution.

I will try the update to 12.0 later today and wait another day for an answer from @urszula
Otherwise I will try to contact support.

Oh and a new thing. When I power it up it gives 3 beeps, as if there are 3 new sms messages… But no, no new messages to see, no updates, nothing. Just 3 beeps out of nowhere… I think my phone is haunted, it has a life of it’s own.

Hope the update works!
Staff might not reply until Monday, it was Assumption day and now it is weekend.

That sounds spooky

Tried updating again to 12.0 but now it says Whatsapp is not working anymore (who cares) and updating failed again.

Uff, I’m out of ideas. The last think I’m thinking is go to settings → manage apps and click on each of the sideloaded apps and “force stop” each of them and then try to update again.

This might not work because it seems your device has “write” issues. It can read but it can’t write in the partitions. Which is why I assume it’s not allowing you to factory reset.

The “cache” parition is corrupted and that’s why is bringing back the apps even after you delete them

Technically this could be resolved by flashing the recovery and the android image of Kompakt OS, but Mudita is not providing those publicly.

@rwten Sorry for the delayed response. I was off for a quick holiday in Sweden
I’m going to ask our team about this. It’s a bit baffling.

@urszula Thanks! I’ve already send an email to support, but an extra reminder is always good

Hi @urszula (and others),
Update: It’s now one week after making the Support Ticket (Monday August 18, it’s now August 25) still nothing from Support… I’ve received my Kompakt 24th of June, was able to use it for about 5 days but it was freezing constantly. Can’t update, can’t use it.
I really wanted this phone to work, but so far… Why can’t they just just say “Oh, send it back and you will receive a new one within a few days”??
If Support has so many tickets that they can’t answer them in a few days than something is obviously wrong. I think we as their customers should get an update in the blog or here at the Forum why Support is so busy.
I really don’t get it. Are so many Kompakts broken?
Crossing my fingers for a good outcome but already scanning the internet for another brand…

@rwten I’m sorry you’re experiencing problems.
I just looked into your case & saw that our team member Matt has responded to you this morning. I will let him handle it since any warranty service does have to go through the Customer Support route.

@urszula Yes he told me he passed it throught to IT.

@urszula Hi Urszula, is it possible for you to push the people at customer service a little? My Kompakt arrived at Mudita 19 days ago and still no update. I really really really like an update. Or better, a replacement phone. Why is customer service so slow? Is it that busy with everyone sending back their devices for repairs?

@rwten I’m so sorry for the delay in the customer service response. I will ping them to see what’s happening in your case. I also sent you a DM.

Well, it took some time, but I’ve received a brand new one. Immediately updated it and it seems to work fine
Hope to enjoy it for a very long time!
