Mudita Kompakt, FM Radio

Ah. That’s interesting. Thanks. Are there any other ways to provide antenna capability? One may want to listen without headphones.

I would bet dollars to donut holes that one must use headphones to provide the antenna. Every FM-radio-capable cellphone that I have ever used has required this approach.

Worthy of a ‘like’ just for the ‘dollars to donut holes’ gag.

I gather that listening to FM radio is far more power-efficient than listening to digital radio using one’s phone cellular/wifi chip. Much less processing required. (Disclaimer: This nugget is from ChatGPT or some such imposter.)

I just wanted to add that in many countries the FM frequencies will be sunset in favor of DAB.

@urszula do you have any new information regarding this topic? Does your team plan to make a native app that utilises the radio hardware on the phone?

@astratev I’ve asked our team. I’m waiting for them to respond. I have to admit, an FM radio would be a nice to have.

any update on this subject? Already built in Radio FM, which is not publicly available, why?

@urszula I would love to have an update as well…
Your team hasn’t responded in nearly two months… if you really did ask them, as you promised…

@ovy I just asked them again. Sorry for the delay, I’ll ping them again.

We want to be transparent about our current development priorities.
At this time, our engineering team is fully focused on refining the core experience of the operating system. This means our primary task is fixing missing functionality and improving stability inside the existing apps and system components.
Our goal is to ensure that the foundational features, like messaging, calling, and notifications, are as reliable and seamless as possible for all our users.

Because our resources are dedicated to these essential improvements, developing entirely new applications, such as a native FM Radio, is not on our immediate roadmap. We believe that strengthening the core system must come first.

However, we understand that you want to access radio functionality now. One of the powerful features of our platform is the ability to sideload third-party applications. You can use this to install an app that provides access to radio stations.

I sideloaded activity manager and I was able to see the Mudita Radio Tuner App. It is great. It works perfectly and you have the possibility to record the music too from the radio. Of course wired earphones work as antenna but there is a button to mute from earphones listening to the main speaker. For me that I walk in the woods for hours this is a great great things. To have a radio FM tuner in a phone is absolutely a priority in days like this. Look what happened in Spain with the blackout all people were listening news from the old radio because there were no internet and no signal. But a radio FM tuner works always if you have battery in your phone. I really hope that the Mudita Team will make visible this app on the main launcher. It is a real shame that isn’t. We live in a dangerous era and have a radio tuner in our phones is a priority at least for me.

I side loaded activity launcher app and I made a shortcut to the radio app, but I changed into activity launcher. In practice I open activity launcher and click on fav app and I have the radio icon. Click on it and it’s opening. Radio works perfectly and you can memorize your favourite radio. Great app

What kind of magic is this? :upside_down_face:  I had no idea.
This is a GREAT feature.

I tried just now. Install the activity manager. When you open the activity manager app, you can find the FM radio app shown in the list. However, the FM radio app interface is not so good. We want Mudita developed app for it.

@ramamohan I just asked our team about the plans for this app. I will return with more info once the answer.

Recently you said to me that your team doesn’t plan to develop a radio app.
Maybe you might reconsider if there is more public demand?

@astratev Yes, @michalstasiuk said that based on the feedback from our Kompakt survey, there was very minimal interest in this feature. However, I asked again, just in case anything could change in the future.
