Mudita Kompakt and Macos

For over a week I have the device, and I am happy with the quality. However I struggle in one important aspect. I was hoping to use this device as my mp3 player. However there is currently no functioning way for me to get music on the device.

Has anybody managed to link the Mudita to a Macbook (I have M3 Pro, using Sequoia 15.4.1) and load music onto an extra SSD. Android file transfer is no longer supported it seems. The OpenMTP app does connect but the moment I try to transfer a file nothing happens. Maybe there is some permission that needs to regranted? But on the device there is no pop-up?

If anybody has an inside please let me know.

Kind Regards

I’m also a Mac user and am expecting my MK soon. Have you tried Android File Transfer? (I gather that’s another alternative to OpenMTP.)

Have you tried transferring onto the device’s built-in storage?

So I tried to download Android file transfer (which is not easy to find as it is discontinued) but it does not even start up on my Mac, so that seems to be a dead end.

With OpenMTP both the scared and the build-in storage show the same behaviour, e.g. when I copy a folder from my Mac to the device, the folder is created, but it halts on transferring the files themselves…

We had another user have some luck with transferring files:

I plan to test this when mine arrives

Can confirm the same issue, OpenMTP is not working for the Kompakt.
I have made sure on Connected devices it’s set to ā€œfile transferā€. Like you said it just creates a folder tries to send the file and it fails.

Even using MuditaCenter for stuff like eBooks & photos is superslow. A 7mb epub took lika 3 minutes to be sent to the device.

I did test it on a Windows laptop and file transfers are very fast because it shows as a Removable Device.

Edit: Read comments below, if you’re having issues quit apps like OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Preview, QucikTime, GarminExpress or any app related to removable storage, cameras. And on OpenMTP activate Legacy mode. This worked for me.

@ Mac users, please specify which version of macOS you are using. (Apple really went overboard with security with Sequoia.)

15.4.1 but I don’t think is Sequoia issue because it works on my other Android Phone

The user @ovy mentions in the thread quoted above by @urszula that he’s using the latest macOS Sequoia (15.4.1) and is able to transfer files. So, you’re both on the same version of macOS with different results. Odd.

Do you have any security software that might be getting in the way?

No they said they use MacDroid, but ā€œyouā€ can use OpenMTP.
MacDroid only allows phone to pc for free, if you want Pc to Phone you need to buy the app.

@ovy, can you confirm if you are able to transfer from your Mac to the MK (via MacDroid or OpenMTP)? Many thanks.

yes, double checked on KompaktOS 1.1.1 and it works (via MacDroid, MTP & ADB mode)

I had the same issue with OpenMTP. But Android File Transfer does work for me (Sequoia 15.4.1).

Personally I find it very sad that we need to jump to hoops like this for STANDARD functionality. The documentation mentions you can manage your music through Mudita Center, which is not true for Mac. Mac users cannot, with the standard apps, use the Music player.

Thanks for checking @ovy, but for the less technical (like me), could you expand on your answer a bit. Am I correct in understanding that the following use cases work:

Transferring:

  1. from Mac to the Mudita Kompact
  2. from Mudita Kompact to the Mac

You can confirm both scenarios over MacDroid and OpenMTP.

What is ā€œADB modeā€?

Many thanks.

Both scenarios

but… ADB is not needed here (and requires switching on the developer mode)

Thanks, Ovy. I was going to ask if it’s necessary. That guide you linked mentions the following:

ADB ā€œā€¦ lets you communicate with a device, unlocking access to the system folders to perform a variety of versatile device actions. It works only if Developer options have been activated on your Android device and USB debugging mode has been enabled.ā€

Good to know that it’s not necessary.

Then, it’s a mystery how it works for you and not for @gezimos who is on the same version of macOS as you (15.4.1). Bizarre.

After some trial and error, and canceling a lot of background processes that some users reported that they may cause issues with OpenMTP I was able to send files using the Legacy Mode (on Kalam mode it doesn’t work).

Thanks gezimos, could you share which background processes you had to cancel and how to do this? I am not so well versed in tech unfortunately. Kind regards!

And I take it that ā€˜Legacy Mode’ and ā€˜Kalam Mode’ are two modes that exist on the Mudita Kompact, correct? There are no other search results on this forum for those terms.

@iyov OpenMTP reccomended to quit OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive and on Github I saw some users saying to quit Preview, QuickTime, GarminExpress.

@petemeister No those are MTP modes (for OpenMTP), it has the icon of PowerCord head thingy
