Molly / Signal working properly in the background?

Hi!

I use Molly / Signal to communicate. But I can’t get it to work in the background, I only get notifications when the app is open, which drains a lot of battery.

This is even when Duraspeed is disabled on it.

I tried to get Unified Push instead of WebSocket to work, but it does not even show up in my settings right now. It does not seem to work.

If you managed to make it work in the background, it would be much apprechiated!

Have you installed a UnifiedPush distributor app? (e.g. ntfy) You will need a distributor app installed before you can configure notifications with UnifiedPush

Apparently, UnifiedPush can only be enabled on the main device that uses Molly, not the linked device.

I changed that now, and could get UnifiedPush to work, but messages are still not going through (even though in Molly it says the status is OK)

To elaborate on this: I still only get notifications when I open the app.

I’ve only ever used the ntfy distributor so I can’t comment on any others - does the distributor app have battery optimization disabled and an exclusion from duraspeed? When you open the distributor app does it show recent timestamps of notifications? Also, if you reboot the phone you may have to open the distributor app once to get the background service started.

Yes, i use ntfy and enabled background activity and disabled durapseed. But the notification tiemstamps are not too recent.

EDIT: Even if timestamps are up to date, I only get a notification when I open Molly.

If you manually push a test notification through Mollysocket does it work?

Yes, if I ask for a test notification, it works. But the app is also open then, so notifications get through. The only problem is if I force-close it, then nothing goes through anymore.

I have yet to try how much battery it drains when I keep Molly open, in the past (with websocket) it was quite battery-intensive, but maybe now it will be less.

Same here. Using Molly + ntfy + my own mollysocket instance. It works fine at first, but eventually it seems either Molly or NTFY gets pruned and push notifications stop working. At that point, I reopen Molly to test the UnifiedPush notification and the test button doesn’t work. Redoing the setup (delete linked device, ntfy profile, redo) causes notifications to resume, but it doesn’t last.

For now, I’ve switched back to Molly’s default notification system.

Just a small update:

I did not force-close Molly, it is running in the background. Battery usage seems to be down significantly using ntfy+Unified Push instead of WebSocket.

Taking about signal, I just called someone, and the beeping sound that you hear when calling a person was actually some glitching sounds. Any help?
