I received my Kompakt yesterday and immediately fell in love with it:
- It’s well-made
- It makes phone calls and the call quality is more than acceptable
- The SMS texting works extremely well; we are currently going through a family emergency where a family member is needing immediate surgery and we are using texting to keep in touch - so, thank you! This is much, much better than my Kyocera DuraXP for this
- I can actually sideload apps! The only one I’ve installed is Gramophone; when the default music player allows play lists and sorting by artists/albums/et al., that will go away, or, I will get an MP3 player with a DAP for high quality audio.
- And, I have a halfway decent (for my use-case) camera on the phone
- (I keep coming back to add more…) I love the hardware/software shutoff switch; for me, it’s a game changer - I’ve already used it while working out in the last 24 hours
I think the people coming from smart phones thinking it will perform like a smart phone will ultimately be unhappy. Not necessarily because the technology is or is not up to the task, but, more due to the philosophy behind minimalism.
If you need DavX calendar syncing, a handful of smart phone apps, turn-by-turn maps that appear on smart phones and/or have a ton of other requirements, maybe sticking with smart phones might make you happier; however, if you want a mindful, minimalist experience, the Kompakt could easily fulfill that goal.
Coming from a dumb flip phone, this device is amazing. Please pass my heartfelt “Thank you!” to the whole team.
