Ever since I updated to 1.4, my screen will freeze on the lock screen and it won’t respond to touch (about once a day, and it seems like its happening more frequently). the only thing that fixes it is restarting the phone, which also means I have to update my settings in developer options each time I restart. I don’t use a password or fingerprint, I just swipe up. Worried I won’t have access to my phone in time if there’s an emergency and it freezes. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix?
@kruss3 Thank you for reaching out & bringing this up. This is indeed a weird behavior & I have not experienced it. I will ask our team about this & get back to you. Since it’s the holidays, it may be a few days before they answer, so thank you, in advance, for your patience.
thank you! haven’t had any other issues so not sure what’s going on.
@kruss3 Our team responded with a few things you can try to get everything back to normal:
A freezing lock screen (that’s where the display wakes up but doesn’t respond to touch or swipes) is usually caused by a conflict between the new system files and old cached data, or a peripheral issue.
Here are the steps to troubleshoot and resolve this, starting with the most common causes.
Step 1: Perform a Forced Restart
If the screen is currently frozen and you cannot power off the phone normally:
Press and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds.
Keep holding it until the screen goes black and the device vibrates/restarts.
Step 2: Remove the SD Card (Critical Check)
We have seen cases where the system hangs at the lock screen because it is trying to scan a microSD card that is either corrupted or formatted as “Internal Storage.”
- Power off the phone.
- Remove the SD card from the tray.
- Power the phone back on without the card inserted.
If the freezing stops: The issue is the card. You may need to back it up on a PC and reformat it as “Portable Storage” before using it again.
Step 3: Check Sideloaded Apps
Did you have any third-party apps installed before the update, specifically Launchers or Button Mappers?
Sometimes, an update changes how the System UI handles overlays. If an old app is trying to draw over the lock screen, it can freeze the touch input.
If you can get into the phone occasionally, try uninstalling these apps temporarily to see if stability returns.
Step 4: Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If the lock screen freezes immediately every time you boot, and removing the SD card does not help, the update likely created a conflict in the system user data. You may need to perform a factory reset from Recovery Mode to get a clean slate.
Turn the phone OFF.
Hold Power + Volume UP.
Select Recovery Mode.
Select Wipe data/factory reset.
Please try the SD Card removal (Step 2) first, as that is the most frequent solution for post-update hangs.
Let us know if that resolves it!
