Just some thoughts, or Mudita appreciation

I’m reading a lot of comments on the forums that got me thinking about what I expect from a company like Mudita.

While I don’t know their exact corporate structure, a quick search finds that there are probably less than 100 employees. I noticed that someone pointed to features in a Samsung Galaxy (see forum post about Alarm Groups) and asked that Mudita implement a specific technology that Samsung offered.

Mudita:

Here’s Samsung for comparison:

  • 260,000+ employees
  • 2024 Samsung revenue: $259 billion U.S. ($259,000,000,000)

Maybe it’s unrealistic to expect a small company to be able to do a feature-to-feature re-creation with a global monster’s product, such as Samsung. In fact, as a previous small business owner, myself, I support companies like Mudita because they are not those multi-national companies, understanding that their product will most likely be significantly different than a company that is able to employ hundreds of thousands of people to develop that company’s product(s).

I’m not saying to give Mudita a pass if they mess up (there’s a reason I went with LP2 rather than a Pure); however, we should understand that they have tremendously limited resources compared to companies that have virtually unlimited resources.

As a developer, myself, I appreciate the hard work that went into the design, testing, manufacturing and logistical support to get this product out to the market and I do not expect it to be like all the other phone manufacturing companies out there. In fact, I am hoping that it is nothing like those products, at all!

I was an Executive Director for a non-profit once that had to distribute 10s of millions of dollars worth of goods to thousands of small towns. The logistics, alone, were a nightmare for my small staff. And these small towns were in one state, not globally located. We did not have to conceptualize; design; test; re-design; test again; ensure global, national and local health compliance was achieved based on that design; market and eventually ship the product worldwide.

What I’m saying is that I, personally, would like to thank Mudita for their hard work and dedication to a simplistic principle that I very much desire in my life. I can make do with less. That’s why I pre-ordered the Mudita. Not because I want a phone that can do a lot, but I want a phone that does less. If I wanted a product that could do what a Google, Apple or Samsung product does, I guess I would have gone with their products. Instead, I chose Mudita because of who they are, as a company, and their stated values; also, their Kompakt seems to be a significantly better option to my LP2 while maintaining that minimalist spirit that I desire in my life.

Very well said. I agree wholeheartedly with every point you’ve just made.

I actually think Mudita have got the balance just right with this release by taking a relaxed approach to sideloading. It allows their small team to focus on the core phone while allowing users to add the functionality they need.

From what I’ve seen they’re doing a great job and wish them every success.

Yeah totally agree with this post, they are a small team but they do their best with what they have and they genuinely are trying to make products that are intentional and keep us in the moment, that being said, get your music app sorted out!!! lol (joking)

@akpolarbear Thank you so much for taking the time to share this thoughtful reflection. Your words beautifully capture what many of us at Mudita hope our community sees and feels when they interact with our products and philosophy. We’re incredibly grateful for your understanding of the realities that come with building something intentionally different, especially within the constraints of a small, mission-driven team. Honestly, it warms my heart when people FEEL how much heart & soul we put into everything & how much we actually believe in what we do.

I personally, buy & use almost all Mudita products. I think everyone in my family has a Mudita alarm clock because I buy them to give them as gifts since I think they are so amazing!

We’re not trying to be another tech company, we’re a mindful tech company & we want to offer our community a different option and a different path. It means a lot to hear from someone who not only recognizes the trade-offs and understands them, while at the same time genuinely values them. The fact that you chose Mudita because we do less & do it mindfully, resonates deeply with our entire team.

Your support, your perspective, and your willingness to make space for simpler technology in your life are exactly why we do what we do. Thank you again for believing in the journey we’re on together.

Yes it has been a great Journey, I know when I started using dumbphones in 2021, I used all the major names of, LP2, Punkt, Sunbeam, and even the Pure. The Pure even though it never worked properly here in North America it was the best dumbphone I ever held, and then I got the Harmony and now soon the Kompakt and each of these devices accomplishes the goal of simplifying our lives. All those previous dumbphones really re-wired my smartphone addicted brain and now I am ready to move to a minimalist device which will continue my minimalist phone journey. I had initially backed the LP3 and don’t get me wrong I love that company and team they are like yourselves very good people with a great mission but the Mudita brand has always spoken to me (for gods sake I even made my own Mudita shirt! lol) and I am so happy and RELIEVED, that I never have to look for another phone again for a LONG time, honestly the dumbphone journey was a long often frustrating one, I am so happy it has finally come to an end.

I am excited to see what new products Mudita has in store for us!
