I’m reading a lot of comments on the forums that got me thinking about what I expect from a company like Mudita.
While I don’t know their exact corporate structure, a quick search finds that there are probably less than 100 employees. I noticed that someone pointed to features in a Samsung Galaxy (see forum post about Alarm Groups) and asked that Mudita implement a specific technology that Samsung offered.
Mudita:
Here’s Samsung for comparison:
- 260,000+ employees
- 2024 Samsung revenue: $259 billion U.S. ($259,000,000,000)
Maybe it’s unrealistic to expect a small company to be able to do a feature-to-feature re-creation with a global monster’s product, such as Samsung. In fact, as a previous small business owner, myself, I support companies like Mudita because they are not those multi-national companies, understanding that their product will most likely be significantly different than a company that is able to employ hundreds of thousands of people to develop that company’s product(s).
I’m not saying to give Mudita a pass if they mess up (there’s a reason I went with LP2 rather than a Pure); however, we should understand that they have tremendously limited resources compared to companies that have virtually unlimited resources.
As a developer, myself, I appreciate the hard work that went into the design, testing, manufacturing and logistical support to get this product out to the market and I do not expect it to be like all the other phone manufacturing companies out there. In fact, I am hoping that it is nothing like those products, at all!
I was an Executive Director for a non-profit once that had to distribute 10s of millions of dollars worth of goods to thousands of small towns. The logistics, alone, were a nightmare for my small staff. And these small towns were in one state, not globally located. We did not have to conceptualize; design; test; re-design; test again; ensure global, national and local health compliance was achieved based on that design; market and eventually ship the product worldwide.
What I’m saying is that I, personally, would like to thank Mudita for their hard work and dedication to a simplistic principle that I very much desire in my life. I can make do with less. That’s why I pre-ordered the Mudita. Not because I want a phone that can do a lot, but I want a phone that does less. If I wanted a product that could do what a Google, Apple or Samsung product does, I guess I would have gone with their products. Instead, I chose Mudita because of who they are, as a company, and their stated values; also, their Kompakt seems to be a significantly better option to my LP2 while maintaining that minimalist spirit that I desire in my life.
