It would be great if the LED could be used to notify of missed calls or messages on the lock screen

As a former and long-time BlackBerry user, I would love to see the Kompakt use an LED for notifications. Since the lock screen only displays the Mudita logo and padlock icon, to see if I have a missed call or message, I have to take the phone in my hand and unlock it, which contradicts a bit the idea of not having to reach for the smartphone every now and then to “check something.” That’s why it would be great if the LED would indicate a missed call or message, e.g. longer blink - missed call, short blink - message.

I also thought that this would be a nice option.

I’ve passed this on to the team

I actually like the fact that there is some friction and I have to check to see if I have messages , I really don’t want to see lights alerting me to notifications constantly, to me its just a way of getting sucked out of the moment into my phone

I like this suggestion. The light can also display multiple colors, so there are plenty of combinations to signal there are notifications waiting.

I would personally rather glance at the screen than have to unlock it to check for notifications as well. I see the counter point from @anon7028788 - I think this is a very personal choice, and the ideal setup here would be a setting to toggle this feature on/off

Do you mean the flashlight LED or the front tiny LED? I remember there were some phones that allowed you to pick colors of the latter depending on notification type, but I think it was lit solid, not blinking.

I mean the tiny LED on the front (I’ve seen it show green and red so far). It’s red (always on) now that my battery is < 20%, but it’s been green at other times. It’s very subtle and could be a way to show pending notifications.

Personally I wouldn’t use the flashlight because a) it’s very bright, and b) I like to keep the screen facing up for this device so it would be facing into my desk. Could be another option for configuration within settings though!

I though the same! I had a blackberry with this notification led which i kind of loved, even though it was slowly flashing i didnt worry too much to pick up my phone asap.
Seeking some people are against it, option to turn it on/off would be perfect.

I am in the same boat. The Kompakt’s Settings > Display > Screen Timeout value controls how soon the Kompakt displays the locked “Mudita” screen after anywhere from 15 seconds to 30 minutes of inactivity.

This is fine, but one must then press the power button on the locked “Mudita” screen to see the “Swipe up” screen…

…or the home screen…

…so as to see the number of calls (and/or text messages) that one has missed.

Would it be possible for the locked “Mudita” screen to display the number of calls and the number of text messages that one has missed?

I ask because I find that I keep unlocking my Kompakt to see whether I missed any calls or text messages.

I would prefer to be able to look at my Kompakt without touching it to see whether I have missed any calls or text messages.

  • This is what I have been able to do for three years with my Sunbeam Wireless F1 Orchid. I can look at the Orchid from across the room and see – via LEDs on its cover when the flip-phone is closed (and likely in its charging cradle) – whether I have missed any calls and/or text messages.
  • Of course, the Kompakt could provide these “missed” notifications via text on the locked “Mudita” screen OR via – as suggested at the top of this thread – the power-charging-status LED at the top of the Kompakt

Thank you, @urszula, for sharing these suggestions with the development team!

Another solution would be to let us choose a Settings > Display > Screen Timeout value equal to Never. We could then put down the Kompakt in unlocked mode and easily see on the home screen the missed-call and missed-message ‘tally disks’ on the Phone app’s icon and SMS app’s icon, respectively.

Given that the home screen today cannot persist for more than 30 minutes of inactivity before the Kompakt switches to the locked “Mudita” screen, I find myself picking up my otherwise-untouched Kompakt as often every 30 minutes to see whether I missed any calls or text messages.

Having to unlock my Kompakt to check for missed calls and text messages that frequently is leading me to pick up my Kompakt almost as often as a smartphone addict! Well, maybe not that often, but you get the idea! Thanks again!

I couldn’t agree more. From my point of view LED indicator is the best solution.

Good point. I agree. However, I’m always in favor of giving the user as much freedom as possible, so this as an optional feature would definitely be not the worst idea.

I agree. I do not want to touch my phone unless I need to. Having to constantly unlock the phone to constantly check to see if I have missed a notification is distracting. I have setup my phone so that Whatsapp messages turn the notification led blue and SMS/ Phone calls turn the led green. My phone now just sits locked on my desk and I can just glance at it to see if I have any missed messages. I do not get many messages but the ones I get are important to me. Please add this functionality to your OS sometime in 2026 or beyond.

Former BlackBerry user here too. A LED notification, optionally activated by the user, would be great. That way I could do as before, glance at the phone from afar. And for extra bonus points, activate the LED only when new activity arrives per type, set by the user

You did it on Kompakt? How?

Opinions are like… But mine is that those type of notifications should be added to lock screen :joy:.
Shining led light goes against having e-ink and no harmful light philosophy.
BTW I’m writing this while wearing Block Blue Light glasses…
I guess only way to make everybody happy is to add both options :slightly_smiling_face:

I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my phone so I am not sure if it can be done without rooting. Mudita can add the feature to the phone OS at some point if they choose to. I use the Macrodroid app to listen for a notification from Whatsapp or the Phone/SMS and then Macrodroid runs this shell command to turn on the led (blue) light: adb shell su -c “echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/blue/brightness”.

It can’t already tried that.
The code is already there to support apps that support LED notifications, Mudita simply has locked that feature for “system” apps like they’ve done it for almost everything else.

Wanted to access the LED in inkOS to create a feature to make a forwarder for LED notifications. Like Whatsapp → Green, Viber → Purple like in the old days

There are 1000s of us users and we all have different wants and ‘needs’. I actually find the fact that the led turns bright red or green when and cable is plugged in and the device is charging/charged kind of annoying. There is a setting (in the os) where LED brightness can be turned down to a lower level.
I have setup my little hack to not run late at night time as I do not want bright LED lights late at night…

I actually wouldn’t mind if there was someone with strong and singular vision for the phone software at Mudita (Steve Jobs style - my way or a highway - kinda person).
Instead of using “minimalism” as an excuse to get rid of obvious utilities and functionalities - as we are learning - that are in the OS but turned off. :unamused:
Not having your mind f***d with by big tech and all that casino style dopamine data farm neuro-experiment that most people don’t care about being part of (at least for me) doesn’t mean that I don’t like functionalities that should be a no brainer after 20 years of cell phones development.
Instead we got listeners choice / concert of wishes type of scenario and there is no way to make everybody happy (unless ton of options).
After years of learning ins and outs of Windows just to set up my workstation once in 2-3 years - I’m just not ready for that type of time investment just to set up my phone…

I got no interest in a led notification. The point of the phone for me is I don’t want to be constantly drawn to it. Notifications just pull you in the way addictive apps do. If they do add this I am hoping there is an option to keep it turned off
