Intermittently missing texts (both SMS + MMS) on Mudita Kompakt 1.4.0 / T-Mobile

Problem

I am intermittently missing SMS and MMS text messages. For example, just two days ago my spouse sent me a non-group text message to me that was just a GIF, and I didn’t receive it. I asked her to send it to me again, and then I received it. Then I asked her to resend the GIF + a message, and I received that too. Her phone (iPhone 15 Pro) showed all 3 messages were successfully sent as SMS, even though I didn’t receive the first one. Then yesterday, she sent me a Google Maps link (and nothing else), and I did not receive it. I asked her to send it to me again, and then I received it. Again, her phone showed both messages sent successfully as SMS, even though I did not receive the first one.

Observations

We are both on T-Mobile. She has an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 26.2 (latest), and my Mudita Kompakt is running MuditaOS K 1.4.0 (latest).

It is worth noting that in both cases above, the first text was sent (and missed) while I was away from home, and the subsequent texts were sent (and received) while I was at home. In the first case, my spouse sent the first (missed) text while she was home and I was away. Then she sent the subsequent (received) texts while we were both at home. In the second case, my spouse sent the first (missed) text while we were both riding in the same car together. Then she sent the subsequent (received) text while we were both at home.

I have also not used Offline+ or Airplane Mode in the past week. I rarely (if ever) use these. Likewise, I haven’t turned my phone off for any extended period of time, other than just a few simple restarts. The phone was powered on with good reception when the texts were sent.

Things I’ve tried

  • Enable MMS messages via the stock SMS app:
    • Go to “Settings” → “SIM 1 - T-Mobile”, then enable “Download MMS content” and “Allow while roaming”
    • Also enable “Group Messaging”“Single MMS group Chat”
  • Set QUIK as the default SMS messenger with MMS enabled
  • Deactivate RCS on a different Android phone as well as deregister using the online opt-out form (https://messages.google.com/disable-chat). I did this weeks ago.
  • Deactivate iMessage on an iPhone as well as deregister using the online opt-out form (https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage). I did this weeks ago.
  • Change APN settings to match T-Mobile’s website (https://www.t-mobile.com/support/devices/not-sold-by-t-mobile/byod-t-mobile-data-and-apn-settings):
    • Name: T-Mobile
    • APN: fast.t-mobile.com
    • Proxy: Not set
    • Port: Not set
    • Username: Not set
    • Password: Not set
    • Server: Not set
    • MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
    • MMS proxy: Not set
    • MMS port: Not set
    • MMS protocol: My Kompakt doesn’t have this option
    • MCC: 310
    • MNC: 260
    • Authentication Type: Not set
    • APN Type: default,supl,mms
    • APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
    • APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6
    • Turn APN on
    • Bearer: Unspecified

I had this same issue on T-mobile US. From what I could tell, if I hadn’t sent a message for a few hours, the entire ims system would just stop working. I even observed that, if I had someone send me a message that didn’t go through, if I send out a message right after, I would actually receive the message they sent after a few minutes. Usually, messages are just lost to the ether though. I tried different messengers (stock, fossify, quik) and multiple APN configs. I even copied the APN verbatim from my previous phone which is also a mediatek device. I’ve been using google-less androids for the last decade so it’s absolutely not an RCS or imessage issue. I posted about this issue multiple times in the forum (acknowledged by the team in this thread but never got a follow up.)

Flashing the lineage20 GSI seems to have completely fixed the problem so I can only assume It’s an OSK (Mudita’s stock rom) specific issue, either with the packaged ims driver, or an overzealous battery saver that kills ims after a few hours. But the problem is so intermittent so it’s really hard to debug. The fact that the messages aren’t being redelivered indicates that the phone is acknowledging with T-mobile that the message was received, but then just drops it without committing it to the message database.

I think this issue is being brushed off as another rcs, imessage, and apn post. This is not that; there is absolutely a bug with OSK that’s affecting SMS/MMS reception.

That’s a deep troubleshooting input. I hope this will help Mudita get it right.

When at home, are you on wifi? I don’t believe that was explicitly mentioned, and could be important. Like, perhaps a setting isn’t allowing you to download media while on network.

Hi, I’m running into the same issue, and I have just switched to Mint (which as far as I know should be pretty much the same as T-mobile - same towers). After configuring my APNs, I’m still not receiving group messages. And I’ve enable “single MMS group message.”
I might try the Lineage20. When you say “Flashing” what does that mean? Just that installing lineage20 fixed the problem?
And do you know of any guides on installing Lineage20?

“Flashing” in this context means overwriting the system partition with a different one. ie overwriting the stock operating system with a custom one. I mention it in this thread purely anecdotally in hopes that it helps shed light on the root of this issue. It is an involved process that, if you’re not experienced, could render your device inoperable if you don’t know how to fix it. I would only recommend it to more experienced users since doing this effectively bars you from receiving technical support from the team. One of the users on this forum wrote a great writeup on installing lineage on the Kompakt though, and if you follow the instructions very carefully, you should be fine

Adding myself to the list of people not getting group messages. I was on an iPhone and have de-registered myself from iMessage. I can send/receive individual SMS texts, and some group messages have come through, yet I’m missing group messages from at least three separate groups. This could be a deal breaker, as I thought Mudita Kompakt supported group messaging.

I’m also confused, because this article seems to indicate group and MMS messaging is not supported.

Yet the release of 1.4.0 says group messaging is fully supported:

@Krevbot, the Mudita Pure and the Mudita Kompakt use two different operating systems, which explains the difference in what you are seeing.

Mudita Pure & Mudita Kompakt are two different phones running different operating systems.

I have definitely experienced this, and I am convinced it has nothing to do with RCS issues, as group messages work perfectly for me now (as far as I can tell). I was initially blaming InkMessage, but think it sometimes happens with stock messaging too, although I haven’t caught it yet, because its really annoying to keep asking my friends if I have missed anything.

Have you tried completely disabling duraspeed via ADB? If I noticed it again, that’s what I was going to do. I don’t need 3 day battery life as much as I need to receive all my messages.

@pyrocarm I’ve reported this to the team & they are looking into it.

Adding one more troubleshooting step that I performed over the weekend: I called T-Mobile and had a rep reset the connection on both my line and my spouse’s line. I believe someone had suggested this in a different post on this forum. I then restarted my phone and my spouse’s phone. However, later that day I missed another SMS text.

Thanks for the detailed write-up. I think you’re onto something with the battery saver killing IMS.

if I had someone send me a message that didn’t go through, if I send out a message right after, I would actually receive the message they sent after a few minutes. Usually, messages are just lost to the ether though.

From what I have observed so far, my messages just get lost to the ether unfortunately, and I never receive previous messages.

Appreciate the tip on flashing Lineage20. I might have to look into that, as I can’t keep missing texts like this.

I forgot to add wifi troubleshooting to my list, thanks for the reminder. I’ve tried having it connected to wifi, and I’ve tried having it not connected to wifi. It seems to not make a difference, as I am missing texts either way.

its really annoying to keep asking my friends if I have missed anything.

Yep, extremely annoying. This is a complete deal breaker for me. I’ve already given up end-to-end encryption privacy by disabling RCS / iMessage and reverting back to SMS. However, I knew what I was getting into. I don’t particularly like taking that step backwards, but I can live with it. And while I can make some sacrifices (that’s kinda the appeal of this phone, right?), reliability is not one of them. When someone is trying to communicate with me (especially my spouse), I need to be able to receive that communication. So if I can’t get this fixed ASAP, I’m unfortunately out.

I have not experimented with changing any settings with ADB yet… cuz tbh, I don’t really know what I’m doing, lol. But it sounds like it’d be worth looking into. Let me know if you do end up trying that and get better results.

Any resolutions on this yet?
I can confirm at least 2 cases where two different people said they texted me but I never got the message. HUGE CONCERN!

I have disabled duraspeed via ADB, and I do appear to be getting all my messages now, even using the 3rd party app InkMessage. Again, I don’t know what I don’t know, so its hard to definitively say that was the fix.

Thank you for your message in this thread.
Can you reply here with a step-by-step instructions of how to try this?
Or share a link to instructions?
Much appreciated!
