Initial thoughts on Kompakt user experience - suggestions for refinement

I have had the Kompakt for 4 days now. I have to admit that initially I was strongly considering returning it, but now I am strongly considering keeping it. The biggest pro for me is the eink screen, my brain and eyes love it. It is not the highest quality eink screen on the market (in terms of resolution, but the refresh is not bad), but it is far superior to any other type of display on the market for me right now. I have developed severe eye fatigue issues over the years while using typical phones, so thank you for sticking to the e ink. I do love the simplicity of the apps as well, although several of them could use refinement/additional features as discussed in other posts. However, I am willing to wait for those updates because I think it will be worth it. I have to remind myself to be patient. I think the Mudita team has been doing an excellent job in listening to user feedback so far and I am confident that they will respond with appropriate updates while also keeping in line with their vision.

There are a few key things that I would love to see down the road in future updates to give the device a little more flexibility in catering to the preferences of each individual user while also keeping in line with their vision of simplicity.

First, although I think the team did a good job with the UI of the icons, I would LOVE to see a native UI option of switching to a simple list of apps instead of the icons (my brain hates icons, it reminds me too much of a smart phone). I have tried sideloading several Android launcher apps but I cannot get them to stick as the default, it always goes back to the stock Mudita UI. Not to mention the issues with default notifications from other launchers, etc. Having a choice straight out of the box from Mudita would be fantastic.

Second, I do not see a snooze function in the alarm settings (someone please correct me if I’m wrong). I feel that it is essential to a basic alarm app and I really need a snooze.

Third, I would love to be able to pull up a longer vertical list of hourly weather for easier viewing in the weather app. It would also be helpful to be able to click on a day in the daily forecast and get more detailed info about how the weather will change throughout the day (example-sunny in the morning changing to increased wind, clouds, and possibility of precip in the afternoon). Wind speed on the hourly and daily forecast in addition to temp/cloud cover stats would be very helpful. I would love to see a weather radar if possible. I realize this might be asking a lot at this point, but we are a farm family, and knowing the details of the weather is essential to daily work and living.

Fourth, I would love to see a speech to text button built into the Mudita keyboard (instead of having to sideload Gboard). I got used to speech to text on a different phone a while ago, and although I find the typing experience to be just fine on the Mudita keyboard, I would prefer to use speech to text if possible.

Finally, in regards to the lock screen conversation, I would love to see the Mudita Kompakt text and lock icon removed from the lock screen also (while a screen lock is in place, I have mine set to unlock with biometrics). However, I would LOVE to see the date and time while having the device lock setting on, and would love to see a small icon if I have either a missed call or a text message. I am fine not having a notification center on the Kompakt, but as a busy Mom who does not want to unlock her phone all the time to just see if I had a missed call or a text (just the essentials) is very important. I also have a Sunbeam F1 Pro which I have used exclusively for a long time, and that is one of the things I love the MOST about it. It has a light on the front to indicate whether I had a missed call or a text. I really miss that about most phones now actually. I don’t care about any other notifications on the lock screen.

I am also eagerly awaiting for the calendar to be fully rolled out, and am looking forward to an update where I can sort my music into folders/playlists on the music tool. I hope there will be additional refinement to MMS texting as I cannot currently receive and view pictures from others (they will not download). I am also looking forward to the full potential that this phone has, and thank you Mudita for creating a device unlike anything else on the market right now!

To add on the alarm, it seems it runs the sound once and doesn’t retry in, say, a minute or five again until you manually dismiss it.

I would also like to add that Bluetooth connectivity using my Kompakt is currently unusable. I try to connect with my laptop, and every time it says it successfully connects, but right after that it changes to disconnected again and it doesn’t stick. It is OK because I don’t mind plugging it into my computer and I do not need to do it that often, but moving forward this is definitely something that needs to be fixed. I know I am not the only one experiencing this.

Thanks so much for this thoughtful review, @intentbean8624! We’re really glad to hear that the E Ink screen is making a difference for your eyes and that the phone is growing on you. To be perfectly honest- Mudita Kompakt grew on me too. (Fun Fact- I have a BlackBerry Q10)
Your suggestions are incredibly helpful, and we truly appreciate your patience and support as we continue refining the experience.
I can’t repeat this enough, but REALLY, feedback like yours helps us shape a better, more intentional phone for everyone.

It is definitely growing on me. I admit that I didn’t even like using it at first, but as the days go by I keep coming back to it and I think I love it now. I definitely see the potential. If the team continues to refine this device according to user feedback, it will be the best device I have used to date. I’m excited for the potential!

I second a voice to text / speech to text option. My partner, who also has visual sensitivities due from a car crash, has been enjoying the ease of the e-ink screen, minus texting. From an accessibility standpoint, the only time the e-ink screen isn’t her friend is with the refreshing it does while she’s trying to text. She was accustomed to voice-to-text via her iPhone as an accessibility advantage. That’d be great if the Mudita team could make the Kompakt more accessibly savy as a primary focus, for those disadvantaged folks like my partner. Thanks M-Team!

@robmfr Thank you for the feedback. I’ll pass this on to the team.
In the meantime, I know, @Jose_Briones suggested a sideload option for this. He tested it in one of his videos & it worked. I don’t know what the option is (off the top of my head) but you can watch some of his videos on YouTube:

Definitely check out inkOS for a launcher that only displays apps as a list like you want :
