Tested Band Camp extensively, it simply does not know of arists I like.
I use it to discover “new to me” music in all.genres (I have very eclectic musical tastes). You wont find much “popular” music there. But you will find a lot of music that doesn’t neatly fall into the music industry’s marketing categories.
That might be true for rock or rock and derrivates, or electronic music, but reggae/dub is missing defenetely.
Spotify is way better, but even he misses Serbian bands. In short my mp3 lib rules, HQ ripped by me from CDs
Signal.
(A mobile phone, even minimal (*), cannot do without messaging (sms…). Signal is superior to standard (sms) text messaging and does seem like the best choice for many, in terms of security vs user base. (**)
Maybe music streaming (like Spotify, but currently exploring other options thanks to this thread).
(*) and I agree with what was said above: we all have our own concept of what minimal is and how we want to use our phone, especially when it’s the only one we have
(**) It’s the reason, in addition to basic reliability, why I replaced my Pure (by Punkt MP02 which incidentally currently does not work with Signal : makes me realise just how important it is for me and my family when I am on the go on my bike etc)
it would be wonderful if Signal came pre-installed. it’s a must have messaging app!
second i’d have to pick DeepL for translations.
runners up:
Deezer
Quizlet
Memrise
Signal and KOReader
Spotify, and chessvision.ai, a fairly obscure but powerful app I use to take pictures of chess positions from books and analyze them on a computer
Signal, and Amazon Music. It would be interesting to know if the Mudita Kompakt is able to play the Amazon Music in HD (16bit / 44khz ) and UtraHD Quality ( 24 bit/ 44.1khz) as it sounds wonderful with my Google Pixel and Sennheiser Headphones?!
I’d chose Emergency radio broadcast and weather updates from Bureau of Meteorology, during emergency situations. Unsure if an app like this exists but it would be great - so a user could check emergency bulletins quickly and easily ‘on-the-go’.
I would download Firefox or one of its forks ( Waterfox , Zen , LibreWolf) just a safe private browser that would only be used for necessary things and an app for the local public transport and i know this makes three apps but i would download a radio app like iHeartRadio
-
Some form of wallet apps so I can pay from my phone
-
some health app where I can connect to a smart watch and see my progress and get remiders
-
Google translate or any good translation app. Ideally it should be built into the voice recoding app
-
and yes I want chatGPT I feel those text focused voice controlled apps are really for the his device. As a tool and assistant and info center.
Like being in nature and spotting some plant. To be able to snap a pic and ask what plant and a bit more about it. Ideally presented both in text but also i voice. It works almost just be speaking with a digital assistant. No need for camera quality. I just want to doze off my curiosity so I can the continue my relaxed hype. But still have some info to pick up from later when I am in desktop mode.
I’ve been using a dumb flip phone for over a year now, so I have a pretty good idea of what beneficial functionalities I’m missing and which ones would be a distraction. Looking at what the Mudita OS currently has to offer I would want:
- A simple, secure browser. Something not worth doom scrolling with but still allows for access to newsfeeds, confirmation links, and filling of basic forms (Dr’s visits).
- Basic email client. Email is not a distraction for me, and it comes in handy for 2A authentication, and barcodes for tickets.
- Bonus mention of a really simple 2bit drawing app to use with a stylus!
- Signal
- Signal
Okay, but if Signal ends up being a given (please!), then:
- Signal
- A privacy focused, de-googled, de-appled, de-amazoned audiobook player, if such a thing exists. (And only because it’s already been promised that a Calibre compatible e-reader will be included to make use of the e-ink).
As an aside, if an email client must make its way onto the device, let it be Proton… but not asking for this or anything.
Have you thought about using Signal?
That’s my app of choice too and I strongly believe I will sideload that one only.
Yeah I am not sure I will sideload anything, I do like the phone as is, but time will tell, if I do sideload anything it will be apps that are only tools
@planted Look into the PocketBook as an independent e-reader device. I love mine because it is very disconnected and free from those megacorporations (even more free than Kobi).
To help limit the use of my current phone (planned to use once per month for banking) I’m going to need:
- Email app: to check emails once per day (proton maill).
- Web-browser: for limited web access such as sutta central/dhamma talks (and emergencies).
Currently using brave browser as it blocks ads, clears cookies on exit and allows video/YouTube playback in the background, does anyone know if a de-googled alternative browser is available with these capabilities?
With metta
I have BOTH Signal & WhatsApp on my Mudita Kompakt and they both work fine.
I tried calling, messaging, sending files & voice notes. All works.
Thanks for sharing, I may need to follow suit as these are the only essentials I could need from day-to-day. I am a bit of a purist and would like to see Mudita develop their own solution for these encrypted messaging apps within their software however sideloading will do for now.
IMO Signal is the best widespread secure messaging app, so the simplest take would be to create a fork of it. But then, Mudita user base might not be big unless there’s a way to interconnect Signal fork users with Signal users.
